Call out and vote out the leadership that allowed it to get this bad. There's some who own multiple homes while others are just searching for shelter. Needing over a million to own a home is just madness.

Growing up in Hawaii from 1976 to 1990, even back then I saw the writing on the wall and moved on. It's not JUST a Hawaii problem, it's a world issue. Being on beautiful islands as such, you will be confronted with demand/supply. Perhaps you, as our next generations can start to change things.

I actually did the math and was surprised I am able to live in Japan for much less and could possibly retire there at my age of 32. I am stuck in the wealth trap, living with my Mom has allowed me to save a lot of money for a good down payment but the pay in Hawaii is just not enough for me to qualify for a mortgage. With the money I saved up I could conservatively invest and have all the interest and dividends pay for my living expenses in Japan.

Its a big problem here because everybody wants to live here and there competition is international. Plus you add in the native people and the illegal overthrow makes Hawaii different than anywhere in America.

Hawaii isn’t Hawaii anymore, it’s like California, born and raised in Kahuku on Oahu. So much people from the mainland move here and bring their ways w them, and it’s changing everything. They have no connection to the land or the people so they don’t care. So sad.

I left when I was a child. Looked out the plane window and was so sad. I swore I would never go back until I could afford to buy a house. All my young friends were going to Hawaii to vacation and I never did. Not even once.... 30 years later I did go back and buy a house in my old neighborhood but all my neighbors were from California. kids these days cannot even do that..... very sad. Hawaii in my opinion is at a bad breaking point. Soon the only place left will be Lava Zone 1 on the big island.

Mahalo for the digital spotlight and documentation with real testimonials of the current zeitgeist. Can't kick the can down the road any longer when stories and local voices in testimonials are cemented. This is how we support our keiki. Intergenerational karma needs to change if we're going to continue the rhetoric of "sustainability" and "supporting local". Action needs to reflect rhetoric.

Establish a Nice Tiny Homes factory on Maui for the 7000 people displaced by the Lahina fire and workers rebuilding it. Place those homes on State land. Using Hotels and resorts to house residents is silly because it restricts needed Tourist dollars for the local economy. That is how you start Affordable Housing in Hawaii. It will provide Jobs, Training and Incentive to the Youth of Hawaii to Build a future in the Islands. Oahu maybe too crowded for more homes, but this should work on the Outer Islands. When the Factory is going well, easy to expand their product line to Build larger modular homes to replace old existing housing.

This may be an option, but only for temporary until the government makes some really nice subdivisions and replaces their homes, gives reparations and Oprah and Mark and Jeff use their platform, and all the wealthy stop buying up all the land! Hawaii land management needs to hold Dole and C&H and all that desecrated the land responsible for reverting the water..bring back the land the way it was! Get rid of the grass that was brought from Africa that makes everything a tinderbox! Put back the land the way it was! Bring back Moku’ula🙏♥🤨

To many transplants. Island is only so big. With all the transplants moving here, it's only going to push out the locals. Before we know it, there will be NO locals left. transplants do nothing but bring problems. they have no clue what aloha is. To them aloha means taking advantage of people who are so easy trusting and giving. I know of 10 local families who have been forced to move out of state. 5 others are talking about it, and two more are planing it already. My sister comes to visit every two years. She said she'll never move back. People are just not the same anymore. Even she see's aloha is almost gone. I am also thinking about moving, but will not sell my house.

Unfortunately the people I talk to don't want anymore housing built in their neighborhood. Lots of politicians including Senator Chang, Rep Hashimoto, and Josh Green are very passionate about making homes affordable. Sterling Higa with Housing Hawaii's future have steps and actions we can do right now. Grass Roots institute also have ideas in their Titled “How to facilitate more homebuilding in Hawaii,” If we all help educate your family and friends on these ideas housing can become more affordable.

Rather than having to kept building, the hoʻoponopono (root solution) is to stop the foreign sales of our ʻāina. There are just way too much people in our precious nation of Hawaiʻi. Limit the amount of people moving here (and the ones who moved here) and almost all of our current problems will be eliminated. If we keep building, we will end up like San Francisco or New York. All you would see is tall buildings, what kind of paradise is that?
@martina5296
@martina5296 10 ай бұрын
Hawaii is no different from the mainland. It's just more noticeable because of the limited land space. It's also the wages are low and the opportunities limited to earn more. Building isn't the solution, because when is enough enough? When there is no land left to build on? Building high store apartment buildings just ruins the landscape of Hawaii and ruins it. That isn't a solution either. Also, what does "affordable housing" even mean?

I can remember my happy memories of the good old days that seems so long ago. Today, my children's experiences are not the same that I once had and it's slowly slipping away. It is true the youngest generation have it the worst, the next generation will never get to experience the same type of "good old days". I can bet growing up in the kingdom era was the best experience ever! It's more than just sad, it is criminal, given what led to this outcome in the first place.

Imagine being a child of a active duty military person constantly moving . Sometimes you like new place other times it's hell . One year moved 6 times . Be thankful you have memories of relatives some do not . Nothing consistent . Cannot even remember how many different schools . Point is cherish childhood memories but remember nothing stays the same . Owning a home is a goal and dream . Many never own a home . Value is in family and friends.

It's sad. The democrats have gone off the deep-end specifically on the mainland. But for this particular issue, I don't know what the republicans can do much better. Hawaii is a special place where everyone wants to move here and there is a finite amount of land. Maybe republicans (and democrats) can be more business friendly and also focus on the technology sector to help it grow more so that we have higher paying jobs and not be reliant on tourism and the military industries. Also build more affordable housing for locals with a requirement to have to live there and with a max family income.

Only 20% of Hawaii is Kanaka Maoli. What do you think happens to your culture, your people, and your kingdom islands when everyone moves away and forgets to move back? In case you've forgotten, God deigns monarchies and Progressives are anti monarchy - that's why some european monarchies are expelling members and drawing the monarchy to close. Some oligarcs believe themselves to be gods, and gods don't courtsey, bow, or kneel. If Kanaka Maoli can't be bothered to fight for their heritage, no one else has the authority to.
