I was thinking the same thing. But there are also different types of kidnapping charges. It's not always "This guy came up to me and pointed a gun at me and made me get in his car and drove me to his house and tied me up in the bedroom." Sometimes it's more like "I was doing meth with my boyfriend for a week straight and he had a psychotic episode and would not let me leave the apartment or use my phone." Now, however, the bail seems ridiculously high. $750,000 ??? That's in the realm of a murder charge.

How utterly sad for the parents to ask that a higher bail to be given. They must've exhausted every means to help their son. I truly think that should a Judge release or go easy on a habitual criminal and a far more heinous crime happens, the famlies should hold them accountable. We rely on our Judicial system to be prudent in their decision and they failed. Hawaii's revolving door system needs to be revamped.

I can empathize with this man. I’m going through almost the same thing with my son. I wish there was more to the detox programs like a mental health component. My son is now hearing voices.😢 💔 It breaks your heart as a parent knowing that you did your best raising them to be good people. My son was an azzhole for 10 years. He has turned around completely. Best father and son one could ever have for the last 2 years. Hang in there. If your son has schizophrenia he needs to be diagnosed and on medication. I know a few really good people that have schizophrenia. It happens as they get older. Try educate yourself about it.

I am very sorry for this fathers pain. His heart is broken. I am in a similar situation with a son, currently in jail, who has serious mental illness and drug/alcohol addiction. I have done everything I can to try to get my son help for 12 years now. The 'justice' system is broken. Jail time alone is not the answer for most offenders.

As it was put to me by a family friend who is an attorney in Honolulu, "Hawaii doesn't have a justice system... only a legal system." Semantics aside, my heart goes out to you as a fellow father, albeit of a MUCH younger boy. Hawaii is home, but stories like yours are a big part of the reason I left Hawaii and the US to raise my family.

@@crosscolin That's not just Hawaii, it's the United States, in general. The only goal of our justice system is punishment. No rehabilitation. Then when you get out, your criminal record follows you for the rest of your life and makes it next to impossible to find a job, which just compounds all the problems that drove people to crime in the first place. Add to that very limited and ineffective social services. I'm not surprised our recidivism rate is as high as it is.

This is the same dude that ran me and my wife off the road a few years ago. He first flipped us off as we got squeezed by the narrow road and he turned right into us causing us to go off the side into a ditch. Man i was in fighting mode. Got out, he was 50ft away getting out. Im 6'4" 200lbs. He looked at me and took off. Our rental was mangled but driveable and got back to the hotel fine. I never forget a face. Still can't believe it's this guy! Btw. The cop that came to take our report said " locals dont really like tourists". I said, "then they're stupid and theyll die that way." We never heard back from him.

Ridiculous. It's their son, he's an adult. Blaming the courts/prosecutor for the bail amount was too low, means they wanted the adult to have been treated differently from all other bail settings that they would have established from the same court/prosecutor. Should the prosecutor/court set bond so high that no one gets out except the extremely wealthy, who can afford bail due to their wealth? In that case, it would be inequal treatment of one person arrested versus another. Furthermore, since the son is an adult, he's responsible for his own actions, substance abuse or not. If he's psychologically unstable, then he'd be held in an appropriate facility. The fact that the courts didn't find him irrational/psychological sound to be released, he's on his own behavior and it's the person who put up the bail responsibility to deal with. Law enforcement in other areas might have shot and killed him, if they thought he was unstable and a threat during the apprehension, so he's lucky that the son is still alive. It's the son's choice on whether he really wants to get off the substance abuse or not. It's their life, on the choices that they make. No one else can make the choices for them unless they are declared incompetent.

Looking at dad and son, I am going to guess that he was adopted. This is why adoption is not a good option for me, but I respect those who do. Adoptees are often psychologically damaged; especially when they are not newborns. But the reality is this guy and the people that were helping him look for those victims whose car he hijacked with a gun, they weren't looking for them to apologize or return their car and belongings they were looking for them so there wouldn't be any witnesses, they were going to kill them. It couldn't get more serious.
