South Carolina fan here. Arkansas is the SEC team I root for the most when we’re not playing each other. It’s not easy being a non-traditional SEC power in the nation’s toughest conference. Both of us came into the league in ‘92 and have had our fair share of struggles over the year, but you won’t find more loyal and passionate fan bases. Y’all will find your way. You’re lucky you have someone like Trey Biddy to go to for content.

I so enjoyed your walk & talk! Even the side of Bud Walton Arena you walked out onto I personally have never seen, having lived in North Carolina for years (Cabot now) & not having been to NWA in years. Thank you for the tour of what I assume is a campus trail. Is there another arena anywhere with beautiful brickwork on the exterior like BWA? I've been to a game in the largest arena, the Carrier dome in Syracuse, as well as the largest in the SEC I think, Rupp Arena in KY, NC-Chapel Hill, and others. Those are some large, ugly facilities, in my opinion. But BWA is simply an incredibly awesome looking arena! I hope less traveled Arkansans are proud of it. Since living in North Carolina for years (Cabot now) I have not been to NWA in years. Wally Hall has been my longtime favorite, but I haven't subscribed to his paper in years now. I only listen to parts of a post game news conference, 103.7, & your walk & talk. Keep doing basketball! You are that good! I concur with you on Mussellman being the best coach. What a life story that man has regarding basketball! Did I hear it right that he was a young ball boy for an NBA team his dad coached & he could choose to be on the home or visitors side and he chose visitors so he could understand different coaching philosophies? What a committed young Muss. Hope he stays there forever! That being said, do you think his hot head has had an effect on these same players who beat Purdue & Duke? Slamming chairs down. Having coaches & sometimes players have to hold him back? Thats not a "rare" thing, but seemingly every game. In the least, sure takes from his stature & relegates him to an elementary or middle school playground hothead, rather than who he really is, an incredibly successful and brilliant coach. If we were close, I'd personally tell him this, but otherwise pray someone close to him or the AD actually does. It seems something behind the scenes has happened literally to put this once talented team in a funk. Moreso than something the coach is doing, it may have something to do with the personalities on the team. I sure do not see a leader amongst them. I've heard Muss say he wants 200 passes a game vs what he said was his all-time coaching lowest of 165 passes a few games ago. Then I witness players taking awful shots while guarded while passing up great shots & passing back out almost as if to obtain some quota of passes. Running that 3-man weave out front without purpose or players even looking inside just to do it to obtain some sort of quota seems unproductive. And when players are doing it without even glancing inside or toward the basket I think that is what they are doing. I would think "ball movement" until open in your spot & have the discipline to take it" would be far more productive. That ball movement may be many passes against an incredible defense or it may be one pass & take a shot. In that scenario it would be not knowing when to pass & not knowing when to shoot, rather than x number of passes made. It doesn't take coaching experience to see this team's individuals shoot when they are not open & pass up shots when they should not. And I cannot explain a D1 athlete shooting 40% FTs & missing those field goals that got them their D1 scholarships, along with how many layups I've seen missed this year (anyone else notice that?). One final observation: Once long ago I coached at a large high school in AR. I've watched many basketball games & coached in a bunch of them. This is by far the worst team I've ever observed on any level at when on defense keeping the offensive player in front of you, or as Coach Muss articulates it "taking away the dribble drive". Since this is basically something fundamental learned in the junior high years, I have a theory about this talented bunch. They are the #1 shot blockers in the NCAA I heard last game. And I've observed most of those blocks seem to be from behind. Is it possible they purposely let the player drive around them so they can position themselves to block from behind? Otherwise we must conclude such talented D1 athletes are incapable of not allowing someone to simply dribble around them for a layup. If that is the case, then the great hope would be a winning season by one game & most likely not and on to another recruiting year. About that, some assistant coach assigned to watching film on these recruits did not do his job. The oversight to land this many defensively dysfunctional players on one team would be a feat indeed. Meanwhile, it may be our jobs as fans to continue to enjoy the season's highlights & overlook the lopsided losses that will be forthcoming with such poor defensive fundamentals & rebounding (please grasp the ball with two hands!!) & such low shooting percentages. Lots of grace. I realize no one will most likely be reading such a long comment & mostly its the first and only time I've ever commented in this venue, so I will assume its my exercising my therapeutical skills to alleviate the stress I felt due to lack of hustle & defense in that South Carolina basketball game I just watched :). SO I WILL SUMMARIZE: This coach is an incredible coach for Arkansas! He is a keeper at all cost in my opinion! Great man, great family, who will one day be a legend & UofA will be one of the universities he stopped off at. However, his hothead exhibited during games may be interfering with players potential & most assuredly with the UofA's reputation, & least of all this coach's health & enjoyment in his amazing life's journey. The AD or his close friends should point this out to him. I would if I knew him. He CAN change, I've known others who have. Especially in my sport of participation choice just now - tennis. He has a beautiful family and no job is worth having a stroke over. Nor will recruits continue to show up on UofA's campus if he does this in practice & halftime (I do not know). This team is the worst college team I've witnessed in my memory in keeping the dribble in front of them away from the basket & worst at transitioning to a helping man when player does get around them. I've never witnessed so many easy layups by the opponents. They almost do not know what position on the floor to go to in a helping defense. I have no answers for something that these athletes should have learned in junior high. I sense the coach's frustrations. We fans simply have to relax & enjoy the highlights this year. Doesn't look like it will change. Bud Walton is the best looking facility. AR is so blessed to have it. And lastly, Trey Biddy has to be the best at conveying what just happened in a game to the common folks who simply love sports! That's me! :)

This team is so frustrating because they're so inconsistent. How can you play with great energy and like a team on Tuesday to acting like you don't want to be there and you've never picked up a basketball in your life on Saturday. The only good today is it looks like Ellis is back to form and Marks continues to be our only go to guy. I'm disappointed in the returners the most from last years team. They were expected to lead and be some of the most productive players on this team, but Brazile and Devo since conference play has started have just disappeared. It's frustrating because on paper, this team should be dominant, but they aren't.

Exactly. Truth be told, the lack of effort is probably driving the Eddie and Nolan “legends” absolutely crazy!! If Ark finishes with a losing record, Muss’ win/loss %, overall and in conference play, will be close to Anderson’s win/loss % in his 8 years at Ark. The only difference will be Muss’ NCAA Tournament play with 3 sweet 16’s and 2 elite 8’s.

the offensive stagnation is difficult to watch at the best of times. Lotta standing and watching, late clock iso. Hard to win college games like that without ELITE NBA quality 1 on 1 shot makers. Muss knows the issues and I feel for him. if you are gonna run high pick and roll NBA style basketball they gotta relocate shooters better, standing still isn’t gonna get you open kick out 3’s. Drive and kick basketball could work for these guys with the amount of talent they have but the lack of engagement from everyone off the ball is legitimately so painful. Not to mention overall effort

Hey Trey, before I start watching this, I hope there is some criticism of Eric Musselman. We lost 14 games last year and blamed it on TB being hurt. He’s 100% now and can’t be the scapegoat anymore. I’m tired of “we didn’t win the national championship again (Sweet 16!)” as some blanket to cover a mediocre season. Last year was a 14 loss disaster. And this year is going to be (it seems) even worse. Multiple years the media has given us a lot of credit and preseason ranked us admirably, and we ALWAYS fall out of the top 25; fail to live up to their regular season expectations. Rick Pitino has 11 new players, new system, etc. and they are 12-6 right now with a 1 point loss to Marquette and a 1 point loss to Creighton. Where are his chemistry issues? He has every single excuse Arkansas could have to fail this season, and he isn’t. Obviously, it’s because he’s Rick Effing Pitino. That being the case, Musselman DESERVES criticism. Not hot seat talk, but legitimate, journalistic criticism.
@KingofDiamonds85 Жыл бұрын
Show me exactly what Musselman is doing that deserves criticism.
@Eskewsme Жыл бұрын
@@KingofDiamonds85 he’s losing basketball games. Not just losing, but losing by historical sums of points. This team is drastically underachieving, obviously, and it ALWAYS falls on the coach. The coach willingly accepts responsibility. Just because we like Eric and know he works hard, doesn’t mean every decision he makes is the right one. He struggled last year with just about everything, and we gave him an excuse. He’s struggling again. It doesn’t matter if he’s working just as hard as every other coach. This is a results based business, and we averaged 11.5 losses a season the last two years. And this year is set up to be the worst one he’s had. Next year we might do 30-3 for all I know. But this year he isn’t doing a very good job.

It’s obvious this team doesn’t have it, from basketball IQ to heart. So they’re 50% of the problem. The other 50% falls on coach. When you realize Muss likes 3 point shooting. He’s not one that’s going to recruit bigs, nor does he know how to teach bigs. He recruits guard heavy teams and recruited some “I’s” instead of team players. IMO, Muss will only have success when he recruits quality 3 point shooters, not dribble drive downhill guards. All in all, the experiment didn’t work this year.
