As a Cubs fan, I WISH the Cubs LOST that day just so Hawk could see his team win one more time in the booth. I’m so glad that he got to see both Chicago teams play that day. North Sider or South Sider, I think we can all agree that he will be missed... ------------------- Good Job Hawk Harrelson, we will always remember you in Chicago.

Well, Larry, remember ... Hawk was paid by the White Sox, not by MLB. It was his job to root for his team. Bland, blah announcing is fine on a network broadcast, but if MLB ticket carries the Sox game from the Sox station, you get Sox announcers. That's how it works.

@Larry Barry Oh who gives a shit. First off, Hawk was always announcing alongside more objective announcers like Steve Stone, DJ, and Wimpy back in the day, so it's not like you only heard Hawk ranting and raving for the Sox. Secondly, standard, bland announcers are the problem with sportscasting today. So many have no personality or charm to them, all they do is talk in a monotone voice with little to no enthusiasm when the team they're announcing for is doing good. I don't know about you, but I'd rather listen to an announcer who is excited and engaged with their team than one who could give a shit less, and who sound like they see announcing as a chore rather than a hobby. Thirdly, baseball is not like the NFL where all games are broadcast nationally on Fox and NBC. Hawk announced for Chicago stations, that virtually only Sox fans watched/listened to, so the people watching at home are going to be happy to hear Hawk.

Hawk, I am 24 years old. You have been the voice of the Chicago White Sox my entire life. No one can do it better than you. Since i can remember, every white Sox moment has been called by you, the legend. You are the straw that stirs my drink. I would like to end on this quote that I’ve heard from the legend himself, “YOU ARE AWESOME BIG MAN” Enjoy your retirement. You deserve it!

My Grandpa was a DIEHARD White Sox fan as I'm a DIEHARD Cubs Fan but it was my 1st time to be at the Old Comiskey Park in 1990 which was the last season for it and for an early birthday present Grampy was able to introduce me to Hawk and I have to say that he is one of the nicest gentleman around the profession of Announcing despite what he has said about umpires. (FTR I'm an umpire and I disagreed with them but still respected his opinion and knowledge of the game). He DESERVES to be in the Ford Frick portion of the HOF!

My favorite Hawk memory is this it's not one in particular but it's that relaxing feeling you get when you would watch a sox game late at night in the summer and it would be lopsided and he would just go into random stories and bits either about the players or the game. I really don't know what it was but I just always felt so relaxed and at peace during those types of nights. I truly miss those nights

Years ago when Hawk played for the BoSox, during a rain delay he went into the stands just to sign autographs. IIRC, a fine was imposed for violating league rules against leaving the playing field. But Hawk didn't care as he always enjoyed drawing attention to himself. Did he break the rules? Who the heck cares! In the old days baseball was always known for its many characters. Players, coaches, even the umpires had their own unique style of play and of making calls. No sameness, no uniformity, no conformity. Baseball was always a game of characters each unique in his own ways. As an old school fan, former amateur player & coach, and as a free lance reporter, I sure miss the old style of play, the old game of baseball. Hawk was one heck of a unique character that made the game as great as it was. They just don't make them like this anymore. Bless his heart!

Interesting to read where Hawk got fined for leaving the field. In 1977 son and I attended a Sox Angels game in California. Sox bull pen sat in general admission seats behind the pen. Rule must have been changed.

in 68 i was 13 and brought a big sign to fenway that said "go hawk" with a drawing of his taped wrists. he launched a moonshot way out of left center over the 379 sign. running down the first base line he looked up and gave me a thumbs up. after the game he came out of the dugout called me down to the field level, signed the ball he had hit, took off his cap and gave it to me, gave me and handshake and said thanks!! i never forgot it to this day!
