I bought the 2024 Prefered Hatchback after comparing it extensively to the Civic Ex hatchback and the Corolla Se and the decision was a no brainer. The Corolla is subpar to both competitors in every way, but people pay more for close to 100% reliability but I’ll settle for 99% and get a much better car. I like the civic Ex but the final price difference compared to the 3 after unwanted dealer add-ons and marketing adjustments was $4.5k or more. So it’s not a comp to the Mazda3 2.5. The interior is best in class and I personally like the natural vs turbocharged engine in a Civic . A turbo engine gets better performance, but the additional stress will surely shorten the engine life. No problems at 11 months and very happy with the decision.

The only problem, big or small, I’m having with my 2024 2.5 6MT is the cylinder deactivation.. Absolutely awful execution; feels like a misfire going from 4 to 2 cyls on the freeway, and around town 1600 - 1800 RPM in 5th or 6th the vibration during the 2 cyl cycle is unacceptable. This is my 20th or so new car in nearly 45 years of driving, excluding my sports and collectible cars. It is a singularly non-essential feature ruining an otherwise very good daily driver. The 2.5L is a great engine on its own; with a great manual trans in a light, hatchback package. It works best on all four cylinders.

I have the same car, '24 hatch MT...I swear I don't think this car has ever gone into 2 cyl mode. At least I never felt it. I don't put it in 5-6th gear at under 2000rpm, so maybe that's why. It's a free-revving engine but it loses torque at low rpm. Is there a dash light to show cyl deact is engaged?
@nealmonteko4918 ай бұрын
I have a 2019 hatch MT premium. I definitely feel deactivation, but it is not that off putting for me, and it only happens while coasting at a highway speed.
@JA-rn5qv8 ай бұрын
@@jwsnyder5021 Based on the other two comments here from fellow 2.5 MT owners that aren't experiencing the issue to the degree that you are, it sounds like yours is having some sort of issue. Not surprising at all though really since cylinder deactivation has been a relative Pandora's box for so many brands that have implemented it. It only gets worse will age and miles. Unfortunately, the default answer from nearly all service departments and manufacturers is "that's the way it's supposed to be" because resolving the issues with cylinder deactivation can entail a very costly engine disassembly which that manufacturers do not want to pay for, since even then, they may not be able to resolve the issue. That's why so many people now who purchase vehicles with the cylinder deactivation feature actually find ways to disable it before the serious issues begin.
@ryanbrandt54046 ай бұрын
Take it to a mechanic like scotty Kilmer and get cylinder deactivation turned off permanently. The car will last longer. The longer you run a 4cyl on just 2cyl the more likely you are to have those cylinders warp into oval shape. That thing will burn oil before 50k miles. Turn off cylinde activation and that engine may never burn oil and will last 100s of thousand of miles longer

Oh I thought the sedan was just an enlarged hatchback.

I have a 2023 Select Hatchback. My biggest disappointment is 6 speed automatic. In sport mode, the shifts are a bit jerky ( but not in a sporty kind of way). It's especially jerky when it downshifts from 2 to 1, pulling to a red light or stop sign. Has anyone noticed that? Put a Honda-sourced CVT in it !

I didn’t have that problem but let see what others say

The worst automatic transmission ever built in this segment. It s slow and lazy and whinning gearbox like a cheap old rental car. The amateur AI software in the transmission control confuses the engine which results in bad gear angagements and horrific fuel consumptions. It spent more time hunting for the right gear than actually driving. You should avoid this car despite all the glossy interior designs. You ll regret and hate every minute spending time in it. Neither it rewards yiu with a smile nor your pocket money. It s a very Amateur car compared to the rivals

I dont know what Mazda you’ve been driving, but every single 6 speed i’ve driven has been well composed and knows what it wants to do.

Have you tried a Toyota eCVT? If you wanna go slow it's good, but everything else is worse.
