What a mesmerizing interview! Gonz is like Picasso, though I'm not sure if he's more the painter or the paintings. The conversation moves like his skating-wholly unique, disjointed, and seamless at the same time. He is one of the most versatile skaters we have, and thank goodness we have him. The random shared and complementary memories bestow laughs and nostalgia on us. Thank you for this.

Of course the Earth could only shake and tremble as these two people shared the same spacetime location. Two great dudes that go great together. Mark is just such a lovely human being. No artifice, no conceit, no dishonesty, no disdain for anyone or anything, just an earnest, sincere, humble soul. To see both Tony and Gonz appreciating each other's abilities and laughing like only old friends can is to know what contentment really is. You really get the feeling that hanging out with Gonz would make you feel loads better anytime or anywhere. One of the most beautiful moments was when Tony asked him what his favorite thing to do at a contest/skate event was and Gonz just guilelessly answers "I just loved being part of the scene." Somebody who just deeply enjoys and appreciates being with and around other skaters skating for the pure love and sheer fun of it. What a wonderful way to start the week.

Jeff Phillips and Mark were my inspirations for getting into skating. We were watching skate videos on VHS tape, Jeff at Mt. Trashmore and then Mark at Oceanside. We didn't really have any ramps where we lived, and I'm not too fond of heights, so I gravatated more to street skating. Oh, the part about Tony's dad telling Mark to settle down and win one of the contests, I felt the same about Mark. I think he won that contest in Oceanside so easily, after that, he became a jokester at contests, playing around and trying really hard stuff while other skaters just played it safe and won. I always wanted him to win more, too.

It was truly amazing as a kid to come across the Vision Gonz board being sold at a local shop during my vacation in Portugal. Later in life, seeing the Gonz riding his bike in the city was a wild experience that I'll never forget.😁

On the pioneering of larger noses on boards, Mark is correct on kinda referring to Blender. My brother has one of Neil's used (Snake and Lattice) boards from 1984, that was thrown in the trash at Del Mar by Neil because it delaminated big time on the tail. The board has 3 different hole patterns on the front truck area (hand-drilled by Neil) in effort to make the nose larger back in 1984. My brother showed the deck to Neil in 2005, at an art show in San Diego and his response was hilarious. He just made a hmmmmff noise. He said he remembered the board, but gave no other verbal information or history. My brother and I were laughing and tripping at the same time because while Neil was holding and looking at the board, he nonchalantly threw it on the ground, under his feet, in the dirt and rocks, to see how it felt. To us it is basically a museum piece, but to Neil it was just an old crappy board.
