Senator, as an Ivy League-educated lawyer you apparently don't know the role of a defense attorney in our criminal justice system. It is not the role of a defense attorney to "do justice" - that is the role of the prosecution and,, ultimately, the Court. Perhaps you missed this at Harvard or Yale, but we have an adversarial justice system. This was by far one of your worst lines of questioning ever.

As I understand the US law system, defense attorneys must also "uphold the law". Of course, this can trump the obligations to his client only in very special circumstances. I think that in this instance, he was within his role of a defense attorney. Hawley probably knows this, too, but he wants people to vote for him, not serve the justice system. That is his role as a politician.

Seems to me that if the sentencing guidelines were suggesting 210-240 and the government was saying 189, it would have been far more appropriate (at least as far as representing the client is concerned) to have asked for 180 months exactly. That's a round, 15 year sentence, it's still well below the sentencing guidelines AND below the government's suggestion. Instead he actively chose to pursue 105 months, which is both ridiculous in principle and tremendously insulting to the victims.....

Federico prosecuted and defended, he justifies his decisions as his job. Moral responsibility and his judgement is worrying. How he can defend such a person is beyond me. If not morally his experience should show the affect on the victims, and his duty to give them some part of justice by recommending the guideline sentencing, but to try and go for way under the guidance is shameful.
