Great players from both clubs and just great football back in the day. Fast and furious and no place for the faint hearted. Just watching that quarter you can see what Mathews was like as a youngster. He is around 23 in this match and just his power was too much for anyone back then. A fast tank with mercurial skills.

Hawthorn 14.24.108 (Goals: Crimmins 3, Matthews 3, Goad 2, Moncrieff 2, Bevan, McCarthy, Meagher, Scott) defeated Carlton 12.14.86 (Goals: Armstrong 4, Walsh 3, Keogh 2, Nicholls 2, Dickson) This was one of the last games Hawthorn played at Glenferrie Oval. They played their home games at Princes Park from the following year (1974) to 1991. While they did win 7 premierships in that period they played at Princes Park, the Hawks lost a bit of its soul playing at Princes Park, It was never accepted by many Hawthorn supporters who never understood why their club was playing their home games in enemy territory (Carlton). Only when Hawthorn moved to Waverley Park in 1992, the Hawks were able to re-connect fully as a club again with its supporters because of its close distance to Hawthorn, and Hawthorn being an eastern suburb club, it related to Waverley much, much more than Princes Park.

I only started going to footy on the regular from 1974 onwards, so never felt the disconnect you speak of here.....Our success from 1974-1991 (7 Premierships, 11 Grand finals, 3 losing Prelims & 42 Finals in 18 seasons) was a Golden era of football from us, that will likely never be replicated again. With Old Father Time - Michel Tuck - being the one constant throughout.

Great to see Big al Martello in his prime, being so dominant in this game; & also the emergence of John 'Bomber' Hendrie....Parkin - the captain - played very well too.

many things come out of the past that have fallen to the change of time. Players were visibly blowing fog with the obvious cold, but the cow paddock condition of Glenferrie and the tight wings with a single umpire, meant that the physical aspects of the game wouldn't be lacking in your reception. A crowd running onto the ground while the last kick was taken, torn up newspaper dispensed when goals were kicked, an umpire being described as being good on the day, and 6 foot 4 police in overcoats standing at race entrances.

Find it hard to believe that spectators were throwing paper or streamers onto the ground.

Very common at every game from the 50s to. 80s at least. Tailed off or banned after some of the paper caught fire once. Supporter logic.

Tiny ground,they moved because their fan base increased after the 1971 flag?G Oval only held 20,000 max.

@Michael Rogers Well before issues of health and safety came into being. I have only gone past Glenferrie oval on a train and Christ, its tiny. The poor mugs who were crammed in to those 30k + matches you talked about were probably unaware of the dangers involved when you think of something like the Hillsborough disaster in England all those years ago.

Would love to see footage of the train drivers stopping his train outside the ground to have a look at the game in progress. Used to see this on the TV replays back then. Anyone come across this on KZbin?

Commentators are the great Doug Heywood and Peter Ewin. Does anyone now why Leigh Matthews was wearing #53 in this game?

@johnepifano1639 4 жыл бұрын
Correction: from the website The Roar "he forgot to pack his number three jumper and played in number 53". By the way (from alftables.com) on that day Leigh had 31 kicks, 5 handballs and kicked 3 goals 6 behinds to be clearly best on ground. By the way, Peter Crimmins had 25 disposals and kicked 3 goals.
