I was there that year playing with the Boys of '76 from Racine. During the awards they had to have the Cabs at one end of the field and the Skyliners at the other with all the other corps keeping them apart. Cabs rocked !!! Pepi did too !!!

@EarDoc40 Played with the Boys in '70 and '72. Big Daddy [ Dave Richards] was our Drum Major. Early sixties I played with the Milwaukee Elks Youth Band [ French Horn], from '65-'69 USMC, after '72 returned to San Diego and became director of " EarthQuake" DrumCorps in late '90's

@EarDoc40 " EarthQuake " was a Division lll DCI Corps that competed in Calif. for 2 1/2 years and folded in 1998. Our first year on the field we beat Mandarin in Top Brass/Percussion. Yaaa. Glassmen came to one of our shows. Awesome horn line.

Had the pleasure of watching and competing against these guys in '72 as a member of " The Boys of '76" from Racine, Wisc. If I remember they fielded 65+ horns. DCI can out march DCA but still can't out blow the horn lines. We need more Drum Corps for our youth of today.

Several folks asked about the booing. I marched in this contest as a member of the Hamburg Kingsmen. The crowd in Jersey City was around half for Cabs, half for Skyliners and offered just about no reaction to most of the other corps. It was an interesting night to say the least, especially when Sky lost to Cabs on a penalty. The controversy on that one rages to this day......

A total of 64 steps for the major brass section to get to the 50 yard line. That is a stride of about 28", compared to the "8 to 5" steps of today's corps (about 22"). It seems so much more "natural" and is performed very well, especially without yard lines!

In my opinion old school drum and bugle Corps has like far more entertaining and exciting than what dcin dcar doing today and the crowds speak for themselves years ago we had 20000 to 50 + thousand people in the stadiums

The golden age indeed of drum corps. oveerall execution today may indeed be better in DCI - not DCA - but the power, fun and pure in your face entertainment is without comparison where some whows today requrie a good dose of nodoze to get through a show.

Old school , Drum Corps, drum lines plays a lot more difficult parts in competitions, DCI Coors and DCA play it sounds like warm ups and most of them seem to play the same thing over and over but they do a lot of juggling head-bobbing embody English and crab steps we didn't do that in the Golden Age of drum corps we focused on what we were playing

Hawthore was more than Good they were GREAT FABULOUS and when they took the field it reminded me of B52 Bombers carpeting the Ho Chi Minh trail. Hawthorne comes down from the start and man clear the stands look out the BOSS DRUM CORPS has entered the field of competition.

@dnaske 1971 was better! But, for some reason, movies and recordings of it are rare, unfortunately. I think Fleetwood has a CD of the Cabs and other corps from that year's "Dream" contest.

it would take 3 horn lines of today's DCI corps to reach the same goose-bump audio output from a volume persepctive of this half-in-the-bag, overweight, self-trained horn line. Ah, the good ole days when you heard the drums from half a mile away, today I can barely hear them if I am on the 25 yard line
