I bought a 1966 Datsun 1600 Roadster with the money we saved for a Bronco. This is the coolest classic car you've never heard of. I bought it from the guy who owned it since 1971. He installed the five-speed from a Datsun 2000 Roadster back then and I love it. After restoring it about ten years ago he finally decided to get rid of it and I was in the right place at the right time to buy it. The classic car insurance is dirt cheap too.

I bought a 66 in April. It has the 4 speed still. I was wondering what's the fastest u went in it. I drive it in the freeway at 70mph and the rpm is at about 4.2k rpm. Have you drove around that speed? If so what's the rpm like? I want some feedback because I found a 5speed for $1500 and thinking about swapping it.

I drove my 66 at 136 mph at Riverside many times. Course it was not stock. 38 cm Sidedraft Webers made a lot more horsepower over the SU carbs they came with. I actually drove it from Southern California to North Central Texas in 1972 and ran 75 to 80 almost all the way here. I'm still here in the DFW area. Even got in a race with a Porches 911 outside Phoenix coming here. He was surprised I could keep up with him. I think we were running 125 mph top speed before the semis got to thick and we had to back off. I had everything I owned packed in that car that trip. I left home when I was 19 and moved to Texas. My Bud had a 2000 with the 5 speed and I got it up to 145 and the back straightway at Riverside Raceway. The OHC. 2000 were so much better motors than the 1600's. And the 5 speed transmissions were stronger. Good times!

@@prolificgrower7557 you have to use the two-piece transmission. the 46mm carbs on the ported stock intake would be the way to go in terms of power AND drivability.

if you still had the car all you would need is 4 panasport alum. wheels 5.5 x 14 in. and some Pirelli or other p185/60/14 high performance radial tires and koni adjustable high performance race shocks will turn this little car into a go cart this set up was perfect on my 2000 roadster back in the old days. no need to play with wheel flares or wheel spacers and looked perfect. on a race track you could take corners full throttle without plowing out of the corners like old bias ply tires would on the car it literally changes its stance and balance and an amazing fun time . my brother had the 1967 1600 it was remarkable considering 96 hp. i put my 2000 u20 engine into a well known race motor shop for import sports cars and it came out at an estimated 215 hp and could redline 4 th gear at 7500 rpm and with tire diameter ,driveline calculation it could easily reach 154 mph. yet it could go up a long hill grade at 125 mph and at cruising speeds get 30 mpg with 4 throat 46mm side draft carbs and could run aviation fuel of 105 octane. the good ole days were just that🙂

I bought my 66 Datsun SP311 in 1968 in Southern California. It was Competition Orange and was a blast to own in my Senior year. I started racing it at Riverside Raceway in 1970. Hot rodded the engine up to 146 HP on the dyno and could never keep the transmission together. To bad you sold yours. I still have the original owners manual from mine. I sold it to a friend who rebuilt it back stock and painted it baby blue for his daughter to drive here in Texas. But she hated the stick shift. I couldn't afford to buy it back and lost track of it. Was going to ask you to look at the floor behind the seats to see if there were holes in it where I bolted the roll cage in it. I loved that dash. They went to the multi gage cluster in 67 or 68 and totally killed the apeal the 66 had. Had you not already sold it I would be driving you nuts to buy it from you. I turn 70 this summer and would love to have another 66. My wife had a Mata for 10 years and loved ut, so I wouldn't get any objections from her for buying it. Oh the stories I could tell about my life with one in San Bernardino in the 60's and 70's in one of those. Now I know I like you dude!

I feel like there's a dearth of Datsun Roadster videos on YT, so it's always great to see a new one out there on these over-looked cars. Also, to give some additional context to the production numbers, only about 44k Roadsters were exported to the US between 1960 and 1970. After ramping up production in '69 and '70, Datsun was exporting those figures *per year* with the 240z: 33k, 52k, and 45k in '71 - '73, respectively. So despite being more rare than the Fairlady, the Roadsters are typically much cheaper due to the lack of nostalgia created by original ownership figures.

That makes sense. I actually had a couple people stop to tell me they once owned one. It's one of the best looking roadsters from that era to me. Now that I've sold it I keep seeing articles written about them. 😅

Beautiful car, 1st time I've seen one.....A cheap turbo kit would make the car so much more engaging to drive. Not just because of the extra HP but the turbo noise & changes to how the engine responds. 94 to say 115 or 120hp wouldn't stress the engine too much. Add some better brskes & suspension for cheap = super fun Beautiful old car.
