In my opinion Haydn' greatest symphony (although the Farewell is a close contender) "Sturm Und Drang" at its height here brought to us by a truly legendary conductor! I still prefer, though, original instruments in this repertoire, I'm afraid! They have a pungency in this music that modern wind instruments smooth out. The horns look to be period instruments in any case.

Everything but the tricky passage at 25:30 where the oboes get completely lost rhythm-wise. Which is funny but also sort of comforting that such a thing can happen even to one of the world's best, who François Leleux undoubtedly is.

It seems that in the recap of the the last movement the 2o theme is done in the dominant. In Sonata form the recap has 1o and 2o themes in the tonic . Of course at that early stage forms were adopted by composers without there being any theoretical codification.

@@mijoree Thank you for your kind comment; the last couple of years with Covid-19 has left many of us with time to share our thoughts, and I am pleased that you have found my contributions useful. Regarding this performance. i) I think it illustrates why the Haydn/Mozart repertoire should be played by both modern *and* period/original/authentic groups; we have here both the advantages and disadvantages of a modern orchestra performance. ii) I have one or two quibbles over the layout, specifically both 1st and 2nd violins massed to the conductors left, this alters the sound of some of the antiphonal, contrapuntal, and canonic effects when motifs are passed around the orchestra. iii) I would question the use of the almost inaudible - and certainly superfluous - fortepiano continuo; I caught it briefly in the Adagio, and a few intrusive plinks at the start of the Finale. With such a large string section, it really was not needed. iv a) The two oboes were just about ok with the expanded string section and their crucial parts were audible; the tone was much softer and more mellifluous than original instruments, and complemented the modern strings well… iv b) …however, the two horns were too repressed; key contributions were too muted. The contrast with period horns was stark, and left me thinking at points that something was missing. There may even have been here a case to double the horns, or alternatively raising them up, or adjusting the mikes, or some such technical detail. In short, there were some issues of orchestral balance - the bassoon was also imperceptible - and this imbalance between the sections would be my single biggest criticism of the performance, though I do accept that the problem may be my listening on the iPad rather than in the concert hall, or on cd. v) Gardiner’s tempi were extremely well-judged across all four movements; the moderate one-in-a-bar Minuet worked particularly well for those who believe these movements to be played too fast today. vi) Gardiner observed all the repeats properly; this is a huge plus-point, and a major bug-bear with me over conductors who play fast and loose over this, and thereby completely unbalance both individual movements and symphonies as a whole. vii) The camerawork was ok, but no better; without a score, the casual listener would miss much essential detail. viii) Gardiner and the orchestra captured well the intensity of the Finale - it doesn’t sound like an opening movement (the mark of a truly great finale); indeed, the rising sequence in the development is I think the single most powerful ratcheting-up of tension - almost to breaking-point - in the whole of 18th century music. ix) In contrast to my comment about the horns in particular (and to a lesser extent the oboes), the slightly larger string group using modern instruments suits especially the lyrical and sensuously beautiful E major sections of the symphony (the Adagio, and Trio of the Minuet); it creates a beautiful, mellow, soft-sheen sound that period instruments could never replicate. (For many listeners, this is a major advantage). x) If told that of the 107 Haydn symphonies, I could take only *one* to a desert island, then it would be this magnificent e minor Trauersymphonie that I would choose to take. I would however insist on both a modern performance, and an original instruments version for the reasons which should be clear from the above. Gardiner’s version - in a heavily recorded field - would certainly be a consideration; it is a very fine modern but period aware performance, and as you might have spotted by his little fist-pump at the end, Gardiner himself was certainly pleased with his work. Note: I think this concert also included the c minor Symphony 52 which is also available on KZbin; much of what I have written here applies to that performance as well, though I think 52 as a whole is slightly unbalanced, and therefore a marginally lesser work overall

@@elaineblackhurst1509 Hello Madam, thank you for your very kind reply and the fascinating explanations you give us on this recording. Not being a musician myself, I would never have been able to verbalise the subtleties you mention. On the other hand, I am happy to see that you share the great pleasure I took in listening to this interpretation of the 44th by JEG. As a great admirer of this conductor in Bach, Handel, Mozart and Berlioz, I regret every day that he has, to date, only tackled Haydn's oratorios on disc. And I think I would enjoy him just as much at the EBS desk as with an orchestra on modern instruments. Best regards from Lugano (CH).

@@mijoree Once again, thank you for troubling to reply; I am happy that you found my comments helpful and informative. I am somewhat overdue a visit to Switzerland - always a lovely experience - but have only managed one trip to Italy in the past three years due to you-know-what (we went to Sicily last September for the sunshine and everything else); I would like in particular to visit Basel when Antonini and the Haydn 2032 project are performing. By the way, regarding Gardiner and Haydn, beside the two oratorios, he also recorded the last six masses; the reviews are extremely good - I think his Missa in angustiis (Nelson Mass) is very striking. Kind regards from England.

Yes it's a bit on the podgy side but if it's for a hall bigger than the one for which it was written then I suppose you can excuse. and if it's part of a bigger concert ( which it is ), may just be part of minimising the shuffling about. Less forgivable is the fortepiano but you can't hear it. So I love it, and the orchestra clearly so.
