A pleasant symphony, culminating in an exuberant finale which at times sounds like an oboe concerto. Pinnock's usual energetic and precise rhythms serve the work well.

Melvyn Elphee ‘A pleasant symphony...’ is damning with faint praise; it is far better than that, and when compared to contemporary symphonies, well in advance of almost anything written at the time. The oboe solos in the Trio of the Minuet, and in the Finale were written especially for the celebrated Italian oboe virtuoso Vittorino Colombazzo who was employed by the Eszterhaza orchestra in 1768, at exactly the time Haydn was writing the symphony. Haydn clearly gave Colombazzo the opportunity to show off his skills to Prince Nicholas, something he had done from time to time for almost all the orchestra’s players since his appointment in 1761.

Useful and interesting to hear this work played as here using a discrete harpsichord continuo; it allows for comparisons with other fine recordings by, for example Antonini and Hogwood who dispense with it.

Is the echo in the second movement played with muted strings? Sounds like it. Was this Haydn's indication or Pinnock's interpretation? Does anyone know? Actually, I like it!

The first violins are unmuted, the second muted. It is Haydn’s indication.

Music great, painting odd but whoever painted it was quite good at trees.
