I think on two occasions Mourinho talked about playing Stevie G, Lampard and Makelele as a triangle in the midfield. Playing 4-2-2 was part of England’s problem. Mourinho knows Lampard best and had studied Gerrard closely. He would have known how to play them together with Makelele
