I've been to Anfield literally countless times and experienced all the range of atmospheres. It can range from awful, to decent, to visceral, intimidating and deafening. For the best atmospheres, it requires the occasion, the really big opposition and the home team to scent blood. The clowns who come on with the 'overrated' crap have simply not experienced this, usually because their team just simply doesn't merit it. It can get into the heads of the opposition . I recall looking at Man City players in the 2017 (I think) 4-3 and could see them literally looking at each trying to work out what was going on, literal panic. When the home team scent blood and the crowd scents it too, they feed off each other in a feedback loop and amazing feats can happen. Then it is truly magnificent

Hit the nail, there lad. Plus aswell, its used to discredit us cause its one of the many things they're jealous of. Anfield atmosphere? No, its a library. Liverpool the most successful club? Charity shield is a major trophy. 6 champions leagues? Easier format back in the day. YNWA sang all over the world? Celtic sang it first. 19 league titles? Football only started in 1992. And on and on and on.

Something must be done to keep sections of stands local fans! Massively important as once the famous atmosphere is lost, really hard to reintroduce to the next generations!

Depends on the occasion, it can be quiet for the normal games as it’s full of tourists that don’t know the songs and how to get behind the team. Other nights it’s an absolute cauldron, the UCL game vs Man City I’ve never experienced anything like it. From the buses coming in and fans going straight in to the ground an hour early, atmosphere was crazy from the moment they stepped out to warm up until afterwards outside the ground. City couldn’t handle the atmosphere it one bit. Barcelona were the same, the ground got to them.

People always say that it’s a myth about the famous atmosphere at anfield but half of it depends on what the occasion is, when it is and how important the game is. When we play someone like a mid table team on a Saturday afternoon then it’s just another game for us, especially if we have played a big game in midweek in the European cup. For them, it’s a huge game against one of the world’s most famous clubs, for us it’s just a game that we’ll probably win even if we don’t play too well. There’s only a handful of domestic games where there is genuine excitement for us such as utd or city or Everton or a couple of the big London clubs…. Other than that, we’re expected to win and there’s no extra excitement partly due to the success in the past and how we have been spoilt by our plethora of historic occasions both domestically and in Europe. But when people try and say that it’s a load of rubbish then all they have to do is look at videos like this and hear what the legends of the game say. Utd, Arsenal, city, Chelsea, both managers and players have all said the same. Players such as Thomas muller from Bayern have said it. Thierry Henry said that the one club he would have liked to have played for is Liverpool… not because he’s a fan but because he would have liked to play at anfield…. Personally I have seen players such as del pierro and cannavaro crumble at anfield. We beat juve in 2005 2-0 when we were nowhere near as good as them but they couldn’t handle the atmosphere at anfield and they froze for the first half an hour by which time they were 2-0 down and the tie was over…. Anfield is legendary all over the world and the spion kop is the most famous football terrace in the entire world too. Other than some other world famous stadiums, such as the bernabeu, the nou camp, maracana, azteca, Wembley, san siro, anfield is right up there with all of them… and is half the capacity too which says an awful lot about how it is perceived…. Saturday afternoon against Bolton wanderers (no offence) is not the same as a big midweek European game so unless you have been there and witnessed that, then you have no idea what you’re talking about!

As a 60 year old Liverpool fan who learned to read reading the football scores to my father, I regret the games become so commercialised. I used to go to Anfield in the 70's and 80's when the crowd was not 'expected' to perform, we reacted to what was going on on the pitch. Some games were awful and the atmosphere reflected that, others were pure energy and the swaying and plunging Kop ensured visiting teams (especially european teams not used to such rabid support) rarely walked away with a point. But they were men on the pitch not overpaid kids, men in the dugout and working men and women in the crowd. Anfield reflected the city of Liverpool, tough, blunt, good sense of humour. Anfield was a snapshot of society. I'm not sure it is today.
