I’m an RV hauler. You are spot-on in describing the differences in ‘towability’ between the units (TT vs 5th Wheel). And I’m using a 3500 SRW….and 1-ton pickup or no, I can tell the differences. One thing folks should consider is wind. You get into strong winds (like you are GOING to do in the Western and prairie states…..and Canada)…..the TT wants to sway, and the 5th-Wheel stays MUCH more stable. And yeah….I have a weight-distribution/anti-sway kit for the rear-tow TT. But you hit all the high points, and I hope the novices pay attention to what you just taught. Kudos.

I’ve owned two travel trailers and upgraded to a fifth wheel last year. I can give you a laundry list of why one is better than the other. The deciding factor for me was the mistake of asking my wife and kids to come “look” at a fifth wheel with me. I had no other choice after they saw the Eagle 29.5BHOK. So the answer to your question “Which one is better” ? Ask your wife and kids lol

Been thinking about this for months. I think there are really 4 stages to RV'ing: under 23ft travel trailer for short weekend camping type events. Easy to stow, Easy to tow, Easy to buy and setup. But won't last very long, be upgradeable, or comfortable for longer trips or more than 2 people. A good sweet spot is 30ft Travel Trailers with Expedition or F150. A very good base to work from, let's you go nearly anywhere, relatively easy to get going with...definitely right path for those that just camp a few times a year. Next level up is 32-36FT Travel Trailers or Fifth Wheels. Flexible platform that can support a full time family, but better for those that camp 2-7 days/month. Tow with F350 SRW, short bed with 7.3 gas might work...but big learning curve balancing trailer weight and wdh. Lastly, if you are pretty much thinking if your trailer as your home for 5+yrs and frequent driving...go get that 40ft 5th wheel, but you are going to want f450 dually truck and will need to be careful with narrow lanes on winding mountain roads, finding big campsites, or backing in. On the other hand, you might actually get built in laundry machines and near full size appliances and bathrooms. If I can get through the storage limitations, 35ft travel trailer with long bed f350 srw is my choice. However, the most livable floorplans have limited payload and toyhauler designs get confusing.

Hi Josh! This is my first time listening to you, and watching your video on "trailer or fifth wheel". You are a true professional Josh! Your family must be very proud of the way you represent your family business. "Getting to know you better" applies to everything we do in life. It never turns out good if one is in a hurry (even in marriage or living together) and doesn't thoroughly investigate what they are getting themselves into. In public schools, this philosophy should be taught more, but it isn't. We are in south Florida but would like to buy a trailer or fifth wheel to travel around once in a while. My spouse prefers a fifth wheel (of course) but she is just admiring how beautiful they really are. An ancient philosopher once said, "A good reputation is better than any riches in the world". We sincerely wish you continued success, Josh! Joe & Myrta

Thank you for this honest take on RV purchasing! It’s so refreshing to hear the truth rather than the sales pitch. We upgraded from a travel trailer to 5th wheel earlier this year and struggled to find info on my 1/2 tons ability. Despite both dealers saying I’m fine towing a Cougar 29MBS with it, this video helped me understand it was not safe. Upgraded to a 3/4 ton with ample payload and I barely even know the 5th wheel is behind me. 4500 miles this summer and the peace of mind can’t be underestimated. Thanks from Northeastern Ontario. I knew exactly what I was looking for although they are great and yes you should give them a call if you have questions. I did tons of research before I went and yet they still looked it over to see if it was “safe” to tow. I was within my numbers with margin to spare. I know this comment is getting long now but I do have to say if you are willing to have a 1 ton I couldn’t believe how much better a fifth wheel tows than a bumper pull. Even if I don’t travel that much it is worth it to me to have so much more peace of mind on the road.

Another excellent video, and should be watched by anyone pulling a trailer! In the last 40 years, I've learned a lot. Just because a truck is a 3/4 ton doesn't mean it will pull a trailer well. Many other factors play into it. After driving Fords for 40 years, I switched to a Dodge, but that means nothing. My Dodge has a 5.7 Hemi but came with the complete factory towing package, most important was the rear end ratio. My Fords with the 4.8 Triton did an acceptable job, and pulled many miles, but seemed to be stressed doing it. Honestly, this Dodge does it easily. One of my fords had the 351 engine, and a GVW weight rating of 8600 pounds, but didn't do well (and rode like a lumber wagon). It is critical to get a good, honest dealer who will work with you to match the truck to the type of trailer you plan to pull, and then the trailer dealer to make sure you have it set up correctly to pull the best. My current set-up pulls so easily I hardly know it's back there, which is what you want. Having to much truck is far better than not having enough.

His discussion of payload related to a half-ton pulling a 5th-wheel was a winner! Maybe you can pull it, but should you. I'm always amazed that truck makers put tow ratings on half ton trucks that will never work. The best a half-ton can realistically pull is less that 9000 pounds. Your tongue weight required to pull that alone takes up much of the available payload not to mention pushing the limits on the receiver hitch (1000 TW/10,000 Trailer Weight). Glad to see an ethical trailer dealer.

Josh: Great posting! Totally agree with you. Form follows function. Philosophy of use is (or at least should be) a major factor is selecting between a travel trailer and a fifth wheel. Become fluent in tow vechile alphabet: GVWR, GCVWR, GAWR, FAWR, RAWR etc. Factor in things like weight distribution, carrying capacity, pin weight, safety margins etc. Then select a floor plan that's within your specs. For wife and I, it's a simple bumper pull travel trailer with a bed, a head and a mess rolling behind us. For others, the calculus is likely to be very different. Respectfully, WS

So many great points in this video. However, the request to let Haylett "get to know you as a customer" is the key to getting the perfect setup. A brief conversation with a sales specialist will definitely get you into the right size and style trailer (or 5th wheel). I like that Haylett is low/no pressure dealership (I know this personally) and that they are only going to sell you what you can safely tow. Not many dealers are preaching about pickup truck payload capacities, which is often the limiting factor when towing before actual towing capacity. On a lighter note, at 5:02 into this video, Josh's "lifestyle of the rich & famous" impersonation is hilarious, as he sounds like the voice of Yacht Rock radio on Sirius. Lastly, on an even lighter note, who else took note of Josh's brilliant neon white t-shirt. LOL

Appreciate the info. As soon as we moved from an SUV to 1/2 ton pick up, me and my wife were like "now show us the 1/2 ton 5th wheels"! Turns out, not really any out there that a good match for a 1/2 ton. Listening to you and seeing all the options is why we've been able to create a short list of 3-5 models with none of them being 5th wheels. We have learned a lot from you and with safety being on the forefront. Thanks!

Liked this discussion. It's even difficult to find a 3/4 ton pickup which has enough cargo capacity to tow a 5th wheel. It's counterintuitive that diesels, because of the weight of the engine, have lower cargo capacity than a similarly equipped gas model. I need a toy hauler and those pretty much require a 1 ton truck. I'm glad I purchased a dually. May be overkill, but rock solid even in windy conditions.

Great info for a lot of new people. Saw too many times a 30 foot FW with a sign on it "Half ton towable)! You were the first dealer to make me aware of what a pin weight was. The other reason we went with a TT was no steps. My wife has a bad knee and we could see problems down the road. Thanks again.

It gets tricky sometimes when the NAME of the RV has the word "Half Ton" in it when the RV itself is clearly NOT reasonably ½ ton towable.

Thanks for clarifying, Josh. As a fulltime RVer who hates the idea of towing, I was seriously looking into truck campers for a long while, but had to admit even the largest didn't have enough space for me. With my F-550 dually, a smaller, used fiberglass 5th-wheel is an ideal set-up. I love Class As, but you can't park them in the city for those essential errand runs or having a day out on the town.
