Think all child stars get treated like garbage? Well, maybe this video will change your mind a bit - or maybe it won't. Actress Hayley Mills is most famous for her teen roles in 1960s Disney Films. And seeing as how her plucky teen comedy The Parent Trap just turned 60, it's about that we take a closer look at her life and career and how she managed to rise to the top only to essentially lose everything that she had worked for and come crashing on down.
In this video, we'll also discuss her personal relationship with Walt Disney and what being a young Disney icon was really like. While it's not uncommon to hear from former child stars that their relationship with the industry was one that involved exploitation and abuse, fortunately, Haley Mills had a very different experience with Hollywood as a kid.
In September 2022, Mills unveiled her new memoir 'Forever Young' which chronicles her early years being the daughter of the British screen star, Sir John Mills, and how she found her way to America, where she made a career for herself in Hollywood.
While her squeaky clean, wholesome public image made her adored by many, Mills still desired to transform herself as a woman in the limelight. Throughout her journey, she learned quite a few life lessons - some of them the hard way - and now she's ready to share what she's learned with the rest of the world.

If you're watching this, and love Hayley's films, read her new book. It's very well written...a real page turner. It's so despicable that the British government raided her fund....but what's worse is that her accountant never told her before the fact that she needed to dissolve the trust and do something else with that money before it got stolen. Read the book. Lots of details in there.

That is true, and not just with the Disney Corporation. I've seen something like it happen every time a Founding Owner dies, retires, or is forced out of ownership. The Corporate entity loses its soul, and its heart. Maybe, the answer is to bring new ownership into the Corporation, that has the same "vision". For many years, Walt was experimenting with the Art, and Medium, and was in financial trouble several times. It was his brother Roy, who reined Walt in, a little, and brought the Company back from the brink. Mickey Mouse also brought Lionel Trains back from the brink, as well, when Lionel put out a train, that had Mickey, as Engineer. In the case of Disney, it was his expansion into family, and feature films, including nature documentaries, like "White Wilderness", along with theme parks, like Disneyland, and Disney World, and marketing efforts, on "Mickey Mouse Club", "Walt Disney Presents", renamed "Walt Disney's Wonderful World of Color" and tying everything together, that put Disney into the black; almost for good, until Walt, and Roy; died, and the Company foundered, and was taken over by Wall Street. You might find (if you can find the book) "Assault on the Magic Kingdom" interesting reading.

I don’t understand how she didn’t understand about the exorbitant UK tax codes. Her father was a famous stage actor…he never explained what was going to happen and how to shelter some of it from the tax man? No wonder so many famous actors and musicians moved out of the country, even temporarily per year, to avoid that tax penalty!

@@bossofme1955 The Beatles with Brian Epstein looked at the tax situation after going abroad in 1964 I believe. Circa 'A Hard Day's Night'. They were taxed apparantly 90%. But they decided to return to England but invest their money in property. Tax was later dropped to 80% for the mega rich and I believe since those days the tax has had another change. But you can be sure that a million pound will not be worth so much if just left in a holding bank.

I loved the original "The Parent Trap" when I was a kid in the 60s. I had been camping with my family but I had never been sent off to summer camp. I pestered and pestered my parents and they finally relented in 1968 and sent me to a ten day summer camp. It was nothing like the one on "The Parent Trap." I was expecting to be in the shady woods and there was woods there, but the cabins were located up this steep dusty hill and it was always hot. One kid was sunburned so badly he got sent back home the first day. We had to walk up and down that hill for our meals. They had 40 to 50 boys crammed into bunk beds in one cabin. It wasn't that bad and I had fun once I settled in. They didn't have horses but we did go canoeing, camping on the beach, archery, arts & crafts. And like the girls in "The Parent Trap" we had a co-ed dance with the girl's camp located five miles away. That first year I was the one who wanted to go but then my parents sent me every year so they could have a vacation from me. (grumble grumble lol)

Hayley's film "The Chalk Garden" was and still is my favorite. In 1964 I watched the movie 17 times while it was showing in my home town. I guess I like it because it is adult drama and deals with real life issues like family breakup and the love of a parent and grand-parent. Just recently I got a Bru-Ray copy and I am watching it as I saw it in the theater in 1964. - As for the attraction of a beautiful girl, I loved her. She was the only girlfriend I had from 1961 to 1969. I can remember dreaming about her. My number two favorite film of hers was "The Truth About Spring". As in "The Chalk Garden" her real life father "John Mills" played her father in the film. They had a very real relationship and was always prodding each other. Neat film! A strange thing, each year on April 18th I will think of Hayley. She was born 3 months before I was. Thanks for the video!

Exactly. It was the company, not Walt Disney himself, because according to a lot of the actors and actresses that worked for Disney back in the day, say he was very involved and protective of the actors and actresses that were in his films. Later on is when the negative things happened after he passed away and the company took a different direction.

As a kid I loved all of the stuff that came from Walt Disney's company, and if he was as involved in his product as is described, then surely the content he created reflects the sort of boss and man he was. So adjusting for the fact that all people are flawed, I really doubt the recent "revelations" that he was a bad guy. Today's Disney corporation, however, is another matter.

British Invasion Bands also were taxed at this over 90% tax rate in the UK. I think the Rolling Stones became Tax exiles in the later part of the 1960's.

This was more in depth about the downfall of working in the public eye. With as much money that a lot of them made somehow they end up in debt because that don't have people looking out for their best interest. I love when they are able to still be famous and work at their craft. Without any scandals holding them down.

That 'wealth tax' was the same for all artists in Britain unless they could work offshore. Too bad her folks couldn't have worked out a better system for her earnings with Disney etc. Loved her movies and Pollyanna sticks out in my mind from when I was a kid in the '50s/60s, God bless her.

@@Eidann63 Well thank you. Hayley, Mills, she spells her name differently. She Looked good on the PBS Midsummer Murders show. On Amazon there is a book about her. I'm going to order it, very soon. Along with Randy Rainbows new book. I'm versital. She did quite a few movies for Disney. The last one might have been Summer Magic, Burl Ives was in too. I grew up in the same era. I'm a lady. With a crappy name like Leslie you never know. Shoulda gone by my Middle name, Allison. Tired of being thought of as Male.

My life in England began in 1936 and began school in 1940 but when Hayley was born 10 years later she was seen by me many times in films because we all loved down to earth films with John mills Hayley farther playing many parts during the war years then passing away knowing who I was but did not want to know me although people I met in Deven followed him through his career and established a bond which could only be broken by John passing away.
