Simmer (lyrics)
Rage is a quiet thing
You think that you’ve tamed it
But it’s just lying in wait
Oh
Rage
Is it in our veins?
Feel it in my face when I least expect it
Give in
Control
There’s so many ways to give in
Eyes close
Another way to make it to 10
Oh how to draw the line between wrath and mercy?
Simmer simmer simmer simmer simmer down
Control
There’s so many ways to give in
Eyes close
Another way to make it to 10
Oh how to draw the line between wrath and mercy?
Simmer simmer simmer simmer simmer down
If I had seen my reflection
As something more precious
He would’ve never
Mmm and if my child needed protection
From a fucker like that man
I’d sooner gut him
Cause nothing cuts like a mother
Give in
Control
There’s so many ways to give in
Eyes close
Another way to make it to 10
Oh how to draw the line between wrath and mercy?
Simmer simmer simmer simmer simmer down
Control
There’s so many ways to give in
Eyes close
Another way to make it to 10
Oh how to draw the line between wrath and mercy?
Simmer simmer simmer simmer simmer down
Wrap yourself in petals
Wrap yourself in petals
Wrap yourself in petals for armor
Petals for armor
Give In
Control
There’s so many ways to give in
Eyes close
Another way to make it to 10
Oh how to draw the line between wrath and mercy?
Simmer simmer simmer simmer simmer down

I was so nervous about Hayley doing a solo record and when I saw Paramore members working on it with her I was even more confused. But listening to the album, how personal it is, even more so than After Laughter, it makes sense in a way that doesn’t until you listen to it and hear the lyrics. It absolutely makes sense to be a solo project.

Someone mentioned that been said quickly and in repetition "simmer simmer" can also be heard as "mercy". That's very precise coming after the phrase "Oh how to draw the line between wrath and mercy? " The answer is "mercy down". To let your anger get out of you, being less mercyful with the ones who fuck us up. Love that.

here's my analysis of the music video: she mentioned in the annie mac interview that she had this vision of her being covered in petals/flowers and it wasn't the pretty kind, it was painful for her. this new era is about her learning to be more vulnerable despite how it would hurt since she said she has a tendency to push aside/repress how she feels. there's a lot of imagery of the color red, being nude/naked and the audible presentation of breath sounds. i think the color red is the representation of the rage that comes with the depression she struggled to deal with. the repression she did was shown in how she kept running away from it, quite literally. why she is nude i think presents how vulnerable we feel to our emotions. kind of how the rage is the predator, and we are the prey. we do not want to be eaten by the rage so we run away from it. there's this part of her in the woods where she's protecting her chest that's shining bright white light. id like to think it's a nice homage to last hope "it's just a spark, but it's enough to keep me going". we see the red mist see this and get closer and closer to exterminate this light so runs further to protect the light (herself) from dying hayley now gets into the house and continues trying to hide from the rage that is shown to be constantly lurking, just always almost too close enough to get her. by the latter part of the music video, she enters a RED room filled with candles i.e. fire which is quite the metaphor for anger which i think is a way of her finally confronting the rage she feels. she then starts smearing either red paint or earth all over her body. either way, i think both is her way of embracing the rage (if it's red paint) and by processing that rage, she starts the process of letting the petals grow out of her (if it's earth) . as for the breaths being utilized as rhythmic elements in the song, i find it a brilliant way to represent how this song is basically her way of getting this rage out of her chest. id also like to think it's a good way to remind us how breathing literally keeps us alive and without expelling this rage out of us, we will implode and fall apart so this need to breathe out, to release whatever shit we're carrying is greatly shown here by making the breaths such a central point in the song which again, emphasizes the importance of breathing itself to explain why she killed the told you so version of her (it's also the same house in the music video), i think it's because that version of her was the metaphor of her depression back in the after laughter era. the one that was repressing all the rage she felt. in the end, it is revealed that it was hayley covered in petals who "killed" told you so hayley so going back, im inferring that it's her killing that self as she embraces this new one.

I really like the message of this song: the only way to deal with rage is to feel it fully, to feel it burn and let it simmer down on its own. Bottling it up, burying it, or taking it out in a violent way is never gonna solve it even if it feels like a release.

My interpretation is that hayley is trying to run away from rage, symbolized in red. She's naked cause its the most vulnerable and pure state of being. Her soul (maybe symbolized by the white light in her chest) tries to forgive/have mercy. Her fear of facing the rage, as it comes closer to catch her, makes her run away. The bones make her even more panicked, maybe she thinks that if she lets herself be caught by rage, this will mean her death/destruction. As she enters a home, a place that should mean shelter and security, but also isolation she feels like growing a thick skin, or covering her body with new layers (as petals on a rose: "wrap yourself in petals"). With that new and thick skin she finally feels strong enough to sneak on the rage and destroy it. But when she looks at the outcome, she's shocked by the fact that she had killed herself. So maybe the message is that you should allow yourself to be in rage sometimes, as maybe "it is in our vains" so is mercy, for the "line between wrath and mercy" is unclear. Instead of trying to run away from rage, or to suppress it, we should allow it to be a part of our nature (maybe her being in nature and seeing death is also a symbol for it). If you try to kill that emotion, you end up killing a part of yourself.

No absolutley not your completely off the running naked is deffitnitly a natural state like rage is a natura normal feeling. the light in her chest is the fire of rage burning inside of her, the rage that shes trying to hold down the material she rubs on her face makes her look ugly like this ugly being posseses by rage as weve all been there and what happens? You do something you regret during this rage you get stupid so to speak and the fact that she killed this being wraped in cloaks and lookin evil as could be to her ,then realizes that its an old her is symbolic in my mind im not to sure about this one, as saying were all messed up and think about how you have changed in your life in time and now this person didnt have a chance to change and you feel bad afterwards but there already dead. Youve made a decision under the crazed control of rage and hurt someone. I see the moral of the story as rage is a normal feeling but needs to be controlled because its a primal mind process like you are not anymore you now know better than to let this primal mind set control you but if you let the rage consume you you might make a decision and hurt someone like killing them that you cant take back from THEM.

@@alyssamary3250 Indeed she officially has two solo albums, even though for some strange reason, her second album was kind of "snuck" out and she "only" released it on download and record (and very close to the release of her first), when her first album was a major release, which was much more heavily promoted and release on CD and even the now cool again, cassette! (And we can thankfully listen to the songs here on KZbin...) But indeed while she does "officially" have two solo albums, since you really can't own a physical copy unless you're into records, it doesn't feel like it! 😮😂 . It would be nice if she released her second album in more accessible ways, hopefully soon 😀🤘🤞.

Video interpretation: She's been running from some demon being completely herself (naked and scared), everything inside of her that she's been denying is trying to come ou t and she's scared to confront it. She get's into this house (which is basically Taylor's house and the same house from "Told you so", the bat cave) there, she finds the some light behind the door and when she opens it up she finds some clay to cover herself up like with an armor(maybe a reference for flower paste, as she says "wrap yourself in petals for armor" which means to stay soft, vulnerable and open to pain to protect herself) and kills the demon, which is basically Hayley herself dressed up as she was in the "Told you so" music video, where she was lonely in that house, sad and depressed waiting for someone, looking oustide the window in the whole video waiting for someone to save her(that happened to be Zac and Taylor of course) So basically She killed that girl. The sad, depressed, lonely, scared version of hers.

@misakisad
@misakisad 4 жыл бұрын
My take: She is running in a vulnerable state while trying to escape from something that is chasing her or something that’s trying to overcome her something which I believe she is trying to suppress which is why she’s trying to cover the light that sprouts from her chest. She finds shelter in the house, which I think stands for the comfort of her past (music, band, etc) but it is an empty house, which doesn’t offer her the safety nor the comfort she’s searching for and instead prevents her from escaping. Inside this house there is a door, which is the only door that sheds light and as she opens it, it isn’t what she was expecting. It isn’t help, or safety but it’s something raw. Perhaps the moment she finds the mud or clay is when she finally stops and bathes in her feelings of sadness and rage and is somehow her armor; that’s why she covers herself in it, loses herself in the feeling of it. Her “other” self I think represents her past self, as she seems to be looking for something, wandering not so much chasing her as was the beginning. But like a child that only wants guidance. so when she opens the door to her emotions and her let’s say “angry” finds her and “kills” her it symbolizes the sort of end of “innocence”. And at the end she realizes that after that there is no way of going back. Because she literally opened a door that no matter if she tries closing it she has already consumed. All just my interpretation or what I feel from this

I love how the question "how to draw the line between wrath and mercy" is answered in the chorus when she keeps repeating "simmer" and it starts to sound like "mercy"

I really feel this song captures so perfectly the catharsis of actually just allowing yourself to be rageful after so many years of rationalising, making excuses for someone and blaming yourself. To finally just be like, no, you f*cked me over, and I’m angry.

This is... Different. Vaguely reminds me of Paramore's self-titled but it's fresh, personal, really heavy hitting and experimental. Hayley looks more mature, more confident and sincere than ever before. For one, I'm hella excited for Petals For Armor as a whole.

@@howwabouttno2037 yeah, I'm feeling some later After Laughter vibes, too. It's somewhere in between Future and No Friend, but it has the almost manic beat from something like Told You So, really fascinating

I just wanna comment on the “Predator” references whether purposefully or not. The altered heat vision in the woods. The covering yourself in mud? To escape this predator? Omg a masterpiece of nuance of emotion. You’re truly an amazing artist.
