Can you imagine a modern day mower lasting 40years. Normally 5years old and they get scrapped. Great to hear your voice again. And yes, no more about the "you know what."

the kill switch is built in to the throttle linkage for the ratchet just spry wd40 in there and in the shaft coming out of it there should be a felt pad and spray that as well and you should be fine that's what i did and it still works fine

To oil the starter clutch you should use auto trans fluid or power steering fluid sparingly. it most important when you have the clutch apart to use fine emery on the inner spindle and clean inside the spindle tube. use atf or power steering fluid to lube the starter spring too.

Great job, did the same on mine a 1979, vertical pull ,try looking at the inside of the pull cord cover ,flat part?or try a bit of sand paper on the outside painted surface for the date ,changing coil and carb makes it more reliable?

Good job,I think so long as all the components are clean, a light oiling is OK, but may be years ago graphite dust ,may be better, pencil lead

If that was me i would keep the engine as original as possible, you can still get the points, or replace them for a electronic ignition system which does away withthe points and condenser, but uses the original coil. That mower and engine is at least 40 years old, the new stuff will not be around in 40 years time. Would make a really good restoration project all painted up. Heck there is even ball bearings in the wheels !! not rubbish plastic bushes which ware out .

I’m sorry this question isn’t related to this particular video or topic but I’m desperate for an answer as spring is upon us .... I need to remove the top engine plastic cover/cowl to access the recoil starter on a Tecumseh Spectra 50 engine? I need to remove it as the recoil starter assembly underneath is now all loose when I pull on the cord. There is a front mounted screw missing and the cover itself seems to be secured in place with two plastic clip inserts, one on each side, that I can’t budge at all. I have tried local lawnmower repairers with no success. I have searched the internet in vain for months now and cannot find the solution. I can provide photos if any one can assist.

Hi Paul I wish I could help but I have no idea i'm afraid. Sometimes there ate hidden screws under the stickers though
@paulsteve19543 жыл бұрын
@@MowerMan ok thanks. Actually there are no stickers. The plastic inserts I think are the type that push in and expand but the they must be removable somehow to be able to take off the cowling. Thanks anyway.
@paulsteve19543 жыл бұрын
@@MowerMan actually I was wrong. There is a bloody great big sticker 🙄 but there is nothing underneath. Just to keep you informed, the GOOD news is I used a bit of brute force and managed to extract the plastic inserts. I was worried about damaging the cover/cowl but I didn’t. The inserts are an expanding type of plug, not unlike a rawlplug, but with a central self-contained plastic screw. You simply push them into the hole and screw in the centre plug which expands the tangs on the other side. I will need to try and source something similar now as they were destroyed during removal. The reason the recoil starter housing is loose is because two securing bolts/screws have gone awol. I tried replacing with M6 hex hd screws but no good. I’m guessing they are 1/4 inch UNC or UNF thread as Tecumseh is an American engine. Cheers.
