Not me, i screw around with my Poodles that have for a poodle high drive but i would guess mediocre drive compared with what Oscar and Haz are dealing with and having a good time have these dogs chasing balls and doing agility then rest 😂 a kid can run up to them and smack in to their face and at worst they growl and no big deal about it. No problem. I give up the fancy bitework just to gain ease of living with them 🥰 not cool to write here but hey, its nice to live with 😂

I had a dominant, alpha male GSD who was a serious MF. Came from Hungarian border patrol lines. That dog was hell to live with. If anyone aside from me made eye contact, he took it as challenge and would get VERY serious VERY fast. One common trait in dogs wired this way is that they often have resource guarding issues. People think they want a strong dog until they have one. Careful what you wish for. Balance is key. Good balance between prey and defense is critical in these strong dogs. And you don't want those drives to come on too fast. A driven dog that can control his impulses is best. Those are hard to find.

U.C. Berkeley has a study on a gene marker A22 in Malinois that appears to predict handler aggression. When the dog inherits the gene from both parents, it has a strong propensity to be very dangerous to handle. I don’t know where the study stands at this point. I believe that they’re still collecting genetic samples.

This needs to be put forward more! Props to you for saying what so many professionals don’t have the guts to say! That’s also why I’m on the lookout for amateur friendly IGP lines for my next one! Saw so many that turned bad even in great gands, I just couldnlt and wouldn’t deal with that for a personal dog. My first WL GSD was perfect, big « pet side » and he was very safe & reliable even if he had issues! Amazing on the field and in everything truly, I got to start many sports and make my beginnet’s mistakes safely with him. I don’t want a dog that is too intense for me to enjoy a pet as well as a sport dog (with the proper management of course). Love love love the honesty here!

Alpha dogs are sometimes not trainable or sometimes really hard to train. Something like an APBT or game bred Bandog that wants to eat people or eat the owner is something that is not trainable sometimes. At least I’ve never seen someone do it. You just have to manage them. Dogs that are vicious are serious dogs. Also dogs who are dick heads in the house sometimes they just need to be outside. Some dogs need to be like contained at all times. Just how it is. I am glad you guys are talking about real life stuff and don’t just say that all dogs are trainable. You guys actually seem like reasonable people. Some Malinois and game pits and Bandogs and some other breeds def sometimes can have a screw loose and that’s ok… if people can handle them and own them so they don’t hurt others it’s their right and choice because we are supposed to have freedom.

And why it’s so important to have a serious good breeder. I’ve taken care of malinois and gsd from good breeders and both were amazing even as puppies. And the Malinois she was all ears all day, great dog.

I've got a 20 month presa canario, his obedience is superb but in the house he'll stare down my two kids and misses then outside he'll listen to every thing they tell him. I've got him in a kennel out back now or in a crate If he's got to be brought in, it's turning into a management game with him.

Especially in terms of high drive working dogs....people would be surprised to know that there are quite a few dogs who LITERALLY HAVE A SCREW LOOSE! They're outstanding patrol dogs but they are one person handlers and only meant to work in busy areas, catching really bad men, with highly active partners, NOT first time handlers. With the Malinois, it was always with the eyes rolling up in the back of their heads while on the bite. I've also seen a couple of GSD's Slovak/Czech who were man eaters too.

Haz is correct when he explains there is a difference between a strong dog and unstable one. And the real scary dogs have both traits. I've had one of each and would NEVER take a dog that has both traits. Guaranteed to be a lifelong management of that dog that exceeds what a reasonable person will want to do.

Worked with reactive dogs for about 10 years; another 10 with rescued wolves (from side show type zoos) and wolf-dog hybrids. Some dogs just flat out need 110% of your attention anytime it's not just you and them chilling out. A lot of owners would refuse to accept that they weren't experienced enough handlers for their dog, was super frustrating as a trainer trying to help the dog. Had a lady who couldn't have weighed more than 110 lbs soaking wet with a super driven, in tact male Cane Corso and she flat out refused to accept that the dog was dominating her with his weight alone and knew he was able to do it. Poor guy had to live with a muzzle on almost all of his life. Eventually he took her thumb off during a muzzle change and she put him down. Closest I've come to having a mean dog was a big female amstaff that had a high prey drive and didn't like small kids. She was kind as could be to me, but anyone else even get in her space and you'd see the hackles start to stand up and some side eye. She was a handful and if I didn't have 100% of my day to dedicate to her I wouldn't have kept her. Working with wolves was a trip. We had to clean out 2 acre enclosures in a triangle formation otherwise the wolves would find ways to stalk you and position themselves in patterns that were flat out no-win situations for you. They really give off that confident, alpha energy. On a level beyond any dog I've ever dealt with.

I am that 115 Pound female that had a 110 pound half APBT-half Great Pyrenees. We watched him being thrown out of a moving vehicle. Brought him home, vetted him out and kept him. Had him DNA tested and he came back with a high score in “gaminess”. At about 2 it showed up but I kept him managed and I can honestly say he taught me more about “dog” than any I’ve ever owned even growing up with a dog trainer Dad who raised and trained Cur dogs. I lost him to bloat at 4 years of age and it nearly killed me but I totally understand this podcast. They are NOT for the faint of heart.

I have an Alpha dog- he would never hurt me, he has never bitten anyone, but he makes it a point to terrify anyone else besides me. They get the low bass rumble, if they get closer he will just roar at them and pop his jaws. He is a 95 lb German Shepherd, his grandfather was World Champion in Nuremberg in 2010, Ober von Bad Boll, in working dog competition. He is just from a gene pool that has it ingrained in his bones...insanely strong prey drive, utterly fearless and has never backed down to anything...

That's possible, but like they mentioned, dogs are born and develop within a spectrum. And please believe me that you don't see it clearly until you own a dog in the worse end of that spectrum in a situation where you don't have a job to give the dog that'll use their traits. Some situations are lost causes. 95% aren't, but 5% are and they're a very bad accident waiting to happen.
