When I was a small boy, my great grand father (Civil War Vet) used to tell us stories. I laughed when he showed how he cocked his pistol (Colt 1851 Navy). He used the Hollywood movie way of holding the pistol vertically and pointing slightly behind his ear, and then bringing the piece back down to firing position. Those spent cap fell out every time, and he did not get cap jams. Sometimes we "Modern" people miss understanding the "Old" peoples ways. I learned to hold my tongue from that man. Sadly he passed away shortly after that lesson.

Thank you for this comment as I was going to mention the same thing. If the cylinder doesn't have the safety pins but the hammer is slotted for them, that can grab caps and cause problems too so filling the slot and smoothing the hammer face goes a long ways toward reducing (won't say eliminate) cap jams.

A great video, and thanks for the shout out for my book! I came up with a new way to make these, I found (after a few dozen) that mixing the powder and dextrin, then measuring it out, then adding the water was a pain in the butt, so I thought of mixing the dextrin into the water first. That way, you simply measure whatever powder charge you're using then add the right amount of water (allowing for the dextrin's weight, so the proportions change a little), mix, and fill the mold. I talked to John Crossen about this, and he did it even before I could try it and says it worked great. You need to add a bit more alcohol because both of us are concerned about the dextrin going bad (it is organic, after all).

Im an old guy now, but when I was a kid, an old man with a lifetime of cap and ball shooting taught me how to use them. I laugh at your cap jams because the old man taught me if you use them wrong you'll jam up the works. The old timers used to point the barrel up before cocking the hammer to let the cap fall free. Been doing that all my life and had forgotten why as a never got any cap jams. Something to try.
@45calibermedicКүн бұрын
I believe that the method you describe does work, but I also believe that the old-old timers didn't have to worry about it, because their caps were much more sturdily made than 20th-21st century ones and didn't break apart as easily, plus their guns were better tuned from the factory. They expected to use them in all circumstances from formal slow fire at the target range to belly-to-belly putting as many rounds into an assailant or multiple assailants as possible.

First thing I do on Uberti C&B revolvers is replace the nipples. Uberti factory nipple flash holes are way too large for revolver use, allowing too much back pressure resulting in cap jams and action fouling. I use Track Of The Wolf nipples because their nipple flash holes are tiny, which is proper for revolver use. TOTW nipples are available in stainless or in hardened blued finish. I've examined orignial Colt nipples in mint condition, and the original Colt nipples have the exact same tiny flash holes as the TOTW replacements!

I’m thinking that granule size affects burn characteristics even when, “reasonably” compressed. I would think that you still need small voids between powder granules to effect consistency. In high humidity environments I notice the caps pick up humidity in short time spans. I used to notch the nipples so the pressure pushes the caps upward when fired. I finally settled on rubber rings to just keep them in place and keep the primer composition dry. I can leave the caps on for days when the seals hold. One thing i noticed is the lead bullets tend to "stick" to the chambers more when left for days. This can lead to higher chamber pressures. I load a little lighter for long durations.

Good vid. Might be my "purist" side showing through, but I've yet to find any idea like this that 1, works consistently, 2, doesn't end up just being a sidehobby of its own. From this to making my own paper cartridges, it all ends up being more hassle than it's worth to create inconsistent results. I still get better results with flask, ball, cap. On days when I really want to wring out the consistency, a powder measure to go that extra mile. Yes, it's "slow" to reload, but if you wanna shoot crazy, miss a lot, and reload real fast so you can rely on the next round rather than the one in the pipe, get a Glock. Never really felt like C&B revolvers were really made for the "go out and shoot 400+ rounds in an hour" piece. It's a slower pace that, frankly, goads you to actually hit what you're aiming at because a reload IS slower. So, cool product, glad somebody's thinking, but it's not my style. Already figured out I don't need a rapid reload because I'm just shooting paper and it doesn't shoot back.

On the cap difficulties, I would take a look at the flash hole diameter. I wonder if a star plate ment for fireworks could work. Basically one plate with holes of a specific diameter, and a matching plate with pins to compress powder into the holes (in a hydraulic press). Firework stars are usually pressed to be rock hard from meal with binder, but with reduced pressure and 4F/dextrin it could probably still work. They would come out as cylindrical pellets, probably much like the pyrodex ones without the hole in the middle. It would allow you to make upwards of 50ish at a time, and it should only take a couple minutes per fill (provided they do not fall apart on extraction). Maybe put a hole through the mold like pyrodex to help the burn?

Great video. In your pro vs con between Hazard cartridges and paper cartridges, would using diluted nitrocellulose glue to coat a paper cartridge offer the strengths of both types? Improved resiliency and waterproofing of the Hazard with the consistency and fast production of paper cartridges? If I waterproof a paper cartridge this way, does that mean I no longer have to nitrate the paper beforehand since the glue itself is also flammable?
@Everythingblackpowder2 күн бұрын
I haven’t tried coating a paper cartridge. I’ll have to give that a try

Maybe a light spray with acetone diluted

Damn, that’s easily 9x18mm Makarov PM energies. Not bad for a little .36 Colt’s Revolving Belt Pistol of Naval Caliber!!

At 21:45was that a hangfire? For all those shots there was a noticeable delay between the cap strike and the charge going off. Oh, and 26:04, LOL. Pyrodex is just wrong. For the cap jams, do you just need a smaller diameter cap to keep it on the nipple?

I've got 2 Pietta revolvers and both had issues with cap jams .I found a Blackie Thomas video where he filed a groove in the top of the Cone (Nipples) and tried it on both of my revolvers . I now have almost no cap jams except with my home made caps which are still a work in progress. I use an old Food Dehydrator for drying nitrated coffee filters maybe it would also work for this.

off topic but you mention giving your new 1851 navy a tune up .. made me think about my dads 1858 cartridge conversion and how the trigger is super heavy do you have any videos on "tuning " these replicas? if not would you please make a video... thanks man ...

I would love too but KZbin is on the warpath about “modifying firearms” They have been striking down Channels over it
I wonder if you add the dextrin and glazed the powder for a short time you would still get it to work? Obviously add the water later.

Ha when I watched the original video I thought "there's gotta be a better way to dry them out to mass produce" The oven sure would work. I wet wash my brass and used to set them on the stovetop on low heat to dry out the insides

Do you think inconsistencies in the coating and in that powder rim rubbing off are affecting the consistency? Id be curious to see some testing on pushing the limits on that nitrocellulose coat

What about adding the dextrin to the black powder as your milling it. Then packing it directly into those molds right out of the ball mill? it'd be an interesting experiment. I'm wondering if the inconsistency is that, even if it looks fully incorporated....it isn't. Since dextrin is a form of carbohydrate, i wonder what it's effect would be if added as a contaminant directly to the black powder. Incorporate it into the mix. Like 77-13-9-1 or something like that.

I think it would burn very slow. Much like a model rocket engine

You should drill a line of holes in a bit of timber that you can stand the bullets in a row, you could cut the time down dramatically.

Why not use an Excalibur food dehydrator? After an hour, rotate the trays 180 degrees and dry again for another hour. (Rotate by just spinning the parchment paper 180). Your thoughts?

In every view of the completed cartridges I saw in the video, I didn't see any lube on the bullets, and didn't see you add any on top of the cylinder after loading. Did you use any, and if not, might that have brought down your ES/SD a bit? Just a thought. Would be interesting to make up some of these for the 1859 Sharps, too.
