In the case of Euphoria (which is made for adults) it’s because once you leave high school the dynamic is different. Teen years is the only time in which people start wanting independence (I.e. start experimenting, engaging in deeper relationships, etc) while not actually having any autonomy. There’s much less drama if your characters are adults since they can just do whatever they want. Plus: teenage years are inherently hard to go through, which is also easy to dramatize, and you’re way less willing to accept unruly behavior from adults, even young adults, who don’t have the benefit of hormonal changes and puberty to explain their behavior. I’m not saying the next years are less interesting (they definitely aren’t) but teenage years fascinate writers more for those reasons. In the case of teen dramas, the characters are teens because they’re for teens. For example, a show like Riverdale doesn’t really explore teenage-hood. The characters are teenagers because that’s the audience the show caters to. That’s literally it.

That's what a lot of people think, but it wasn't like that at all She pretty much gave it up in the end, realizing it really isn't something "brave and inspiring" -- They were showing that side of minors that unfortunately expose themselves like that to creepy adults, and how it's not okay -- That's why it was shown so dark and everything, instead of movies in which you can tell what they're going for (cough cough.. adam sandlers disgusting movie) In certain moments, they made it *seem* that way, but in way of representing what you feel at the moment, but it turning dark straight after because of how dark it all really is, and/or how you feel/act later on I honestly felt relatability in some of it and tbh, it made me feel for all those negative things more negatively than I already did -- It wasn't glorifying to me But, like I mentioned in another comment, I feel they failed to tackle a lot of these topics in some ways that makes it definitely suspicious and weird -- I found myself skipping a crap ton of things and almost wanting to give up on watching it I can definitely see the discomfort and questioning in a lot of it And they didn't properly balance the dark themes in a way that it gets pretty overwhelming I feel, like someone mentioned, they didn't offer much of a solution too to the characters

I fully agree with this. I'm a Teen Librarian, and a huge percentage of the books that are available for me to purchase for our teens are not reflective of the experiences of the teens who the books supposedly are for. Now, you can say "well, teens don't want to just read books about people going to school day in and day out," but as with Euphoria, people constantly say the books are important because they're "realistic," so that argument doesn't hold any water, and second, the most popular books are consistently ones that are a little bit ~edgy~ without pushing teens out of their comfort zones. So IDK, I'm just left to assume that people actually don't really care about what teens want or need, they just want an excuse to sexualize them.

I have friends who struggled with drug addiction and I have friends who actually did get involved with sex work in high school. To us, this show allowed us to feel like we weren't alone in this experience. As far as teens watching this, I really don't think the show makes any of the issues the characters deal with appealing, including the sex. Also, if the show is TV-MA, which it is, it's up to the parents to decide whether they let their teens watch it. It's not really the producers' faults if parents don't monitor what their teens are watching. Say what you will, but the show is an art form that represents real life experiences and the problem is not the show, but a society that enables these experiences. But not all of us have the capacity to appreciate art just as not all of us have the privilege to criticize this show without relating to it.

Also, most teens do not have that much free time. When you have 6-7 classes the most you'll be doing is worrying about your grades, if you even care to graduate. It's worse if you have a part time job. You're juggling grades and bills. Many of us still have homework or projects to do on the weekends, or are part of a club. Many of us have younger siblings we have to take care of when our parents are out, as well. Some people do drugs and go to parties and have sex but it's definitely not as often as the media portrays, for the reasons I listed above. Unless they just don't care. Some weekends you might have all your work finished and have free time to go out, but the most time you have to party or things like that is when there is a holiday or the seasonal breaks that you get every once in a while.

But it's moreso a matter how HOW you handle it which matters more, which imo Euphoria does exceptionally well - It's not sexualization for the sake of it, there is always a tie to the plot of development of the characters, which aren't half-assed either. No one's fucking just for fan service. Even Maddie's scene on the merry-go-round isn't as sexy as it is just,, sad. Which leads to my next point - Every scene depicting their relationship with adult is never glorified, rather condemned. You never enjoy watching those moments. You are meant to be repulsed. Even the relationship between a hs and college student are exposed for power/maturity dyanmic problems. There are consequences for their actions - All of the actors are unquestionably adults who have obviously done their research or have experiences with the roles they are playing - Euphoria being marketed towards adults is actually a good thing!! It's meant for an audience completely aware of the recognizing these behaviors as wrong!! I look at this show with such fondness for showing Now i understand the argument that no matter what, it's not necessary to protray these things and many teens who watch this might be inspired to do stupid shit. BUT, on the other hands the same can be said about many other issues. I think in the exact same way they aren't promoting drug abuse, they aren't promoting trying to fuck or jack off to kids. @@premaritaltripdream that may have been their intention, but I don't think they accomplished that. I actually have my own personal experiences with underage drug use, self harm, and abuse. Very similar things to those depicted in this show. Euphoria wasn't around when I was a kid, but Skins did extremely similar things, and although they did show the more "gritty" parts of these topics, the entire aesthetic of the show romanticized them & this did actually have an effect on me as a teenager. It often caused me to crave certain substances when I saw them on screen, to romanticize being "a beautiful tragedy," etc. I'm pretty much positive that Euphoria is having a similar effect on at least some of its audience. It's a beautifully done show, but that's a big part of the problem.

To be fair it does a good job of showing how bad the effect of drugs are particularly in the episode The trials and tribulations of peeing while depressed and in the recent Christmas special. People can make an argument that maybe the aesthetic of show may romanticize things but pretty cinematography will always do that (this dissonance is common in anti-war films that have beautifully shot scenes that can interpreted as glorifying war).
@maggiedk3 жыл бұрын
@@HorrorGeek9 1. Glorifying war is a problem too 2. Drugs, abusive situations, and self harm is a lot more accessible to teens than war is to the general population. You can't really make that comparison because they're completely different things. Teens with mental health issues are *vulnerable*. They're vulnerable to being influenced by things like this and there are no "maybes" about whether this show romanticizes these things. Like I said in my above comment, I know this extremely well due to my own experiences. I could find you 10 Tumblr blogs about Euphoria right now that would show you kids romanticizing the things depicted in it. It really shouldn't be minimized, in my opinion. What 15 year old is allowed to go out in 3 am to a drug dealer to attack the mayor /or whatever, i made this up but it can totally be a real episode/. The parents in the show are totally irresponcible and the kids are even more irresponsible, like okay, maybe it makes sense for Jughead's dad, who was the gang's leader or whatever, to be letting his son go to gangs and stuff, but liek, every other parent is a "normal" person with a job and everything, how do you expect me to believe you care for your child but you also let your 15 year old go out in the woods at 2am to hang out with guys and shoot drug dealers????? I think this is a very interesting but contentious point. With the merging of cultures thru the internet, 20-something year olds (and above) are embracing their bodies and sexuality bu they also cohabitate with younger people online and in the media. So there's also a dangerous conflation of sexual liberation and the normalization of explicit sexual content among minors under the guise of this revolution (if that's the right word). But a lot of people would call this discourse sexist. It's very frustrating

i agree with you about k-dramas for sure, but definitely not anime. anime tends to have more issues than even western shows when it comes to sexualizing minors ( namely women ). shoujo as a genre tends to not be very sexual, but that doesn’t mean you don’t run into your fair share of sexual things and / or problematic tropes. a great example of this would be a shoujo manga that got immensely popular in the west a few years ago that goes by the english name, daytime shooting star. its plot revolves around a love triangle which involves the protagonist’s teacher. that’s just one example out of many, many others, but japan has an EXTREME issue with sexualizing minors, even children, within anime and manga.

Especially after finding out the directors are grown men, and this is how they are portraying their "vision". Like, have we learned nothing from past shows with older male directors and how they view "younger" actresses, or how they have young actresses play out what they think young girls could behave? Idk (thank you for letting me ramble off my thoughts haha) Edit: It has taken 3 of the female actresses talking about Sam asking for excessive nudity for people to tale a step back and think, "huh maybe there is something wrong here". I'm glad that the public is now having this discussion but disappointed this is happening to women in this industry once again. Do not let these actress's talent be overshadowed by the 'male gaze' Sam desperately caters to!

However, Euphoria and its nuance of sexuality in regards to the girls, especially girls portrayed as underage, and violence is completely one-sided in my opinion. Underage girl experiences violence and harassment at the hand of illegally older man with predatory behavior, underage girl experiences violence in relationship, etc. Male sexualization just never really comes close to how much directors like to see the female sexualization run with violence. idk if i made sense as sometimes its hard to type down all your thoughts on things especially when you've got so many and bc im about to go to bed but i'd love to engage in a friendly discussion about it ! 👀 ( i also realize since i had made my last comment that season 2 has aired and they have continued to just flash the audience with male genitalia again, which is what it is at this point, but still linger on the 'underage' girls during the sex scenes, imo ofc!) watch the special episode in euphoria and come back to me. it was an hour long of just TALKING, TWO PEOPLE sitting together talking in a diner about real topics and such deep stuff, it was like a therapy session everyone needed to hear. watch that episode and you'll see the show is much deeper and better than what yall seem to think its only about.

@@abirami9481 you should watch the special episode of euphoria then, its just two people sitting in a diner talking about such real deep heavy topics and it really hit home.. it shows that the show isn't just about what yall think about it. the episode was literally just a conversation between two people that I think everybody needs to hear, it was SO well written and the fact that they were able to make 54 minutes of just people having a simple conversation so engaging was amazing. watch it and you wont regret it.

I also don't like how it makes kids feel like they can have a relationship with adults and be in control or that it's ok and in fact normal. No matter how mature you are for your age, it's still illegal and for good reason.

its not illegal here and many states

@@gg_kinz it is illegal unless you're married, not that that makes it any better. It's stachitory rape if the person is 18+ and the child is under 18, even if they are at the age of concent for that state or country. I know it's not the same in all states but still.

shows like euphoria are why teenagers are so okay with over-sexulising themselves online, because shows like this make it so normalised.
@BellyCheese2 жыл бұрын
The show literally highlights why these are dangerous and have big consequences this does not promote teenagers sexualising themselves.
@nidaj57972 жыл бұрын
@@BellyCheese I love this show but it in a way over sexualizing minors, the way the people in euphoria come across makes it look like its fun and empowering when sexualizing themselves like example when Kat shows her body to people online for money and attention, or scenes like Nate and his friends watching inappropriate videos and pictures of Cassie. These are real issues that the show is putting out there but I think there could be a better way to approach it than sexualizing minor characters on a show that is for people 18+ even though most watchers are teenagers that could be easily influenced to do things like this if they're not as educated on the consequences of their actions even though a good amount of teens know not to do this.

You’re all puppets to be manipulated by the elit. They want you to be malleable and the biggest proof of that is how quick people are to attack you for contradicting opinions.
