It was brilliant! I think the fake twist at the parent teacher conference played a major role in fooling everyone. Let’s face it, all rom cola have a twist, and that one came at a great moment. Then you have Jessica’s parents finding the picture which adds to hiding the reveal of who Nanna is because you think that will be the big conflict as he’s trying to reconcile with his wife. If you rewatch it and notice two parts, first when Cal asks Jacob why he’s helping him and Jacob says “lets just say you remind me of someone” and second is when he’s bonding with Hannah the night they spend together and he’s talking about his mom and dad. Don't know how many times I've seen that clip but it makes me snort and then burst out laughing every single time. Slapstick comedy mixed into so much emotional payoff it burns. The son's tragic "But, I love her" in the middle of that madness. Epic scriptwriting. Really, the pinnacle of the craft. ❤

It's more than that though - they literally met while he was constantly and drunkenly complaining about this exact problem, so he of all people gets what this means to him, and it just brings back for him what his own father suffered. Basically, yes he is punching on Cal's behalf, but all the same he's punching all the guys that his mother stepped out on his poor father with.

Gosling's performance here is excellent! How he just stops dead in his tracks, how when Hannah says dad he freezes and shakes, just ever so slightly (I think), and then his (obvious) face at "Can't breathe"; great acting.
