I just realised, the men of Easy, had been with me every day from the last 20 plus years. Every time things go bad, every time I went for a run, every time I have to do something that challenges me, I just think of them, I think well, just Hang Tough. Their legacy lives on and continues to inspire. AATW!!!

Only problem with this podcast episode is that it's at least 6 or 7 hours too short. I could listen to Erik talking about the series forever.

This podcast was excellent because it makes episode 5 so much better now knowing what Winters experienced within his mind. Just riding that train with normal people who aren't killing eacthother but just going through their daily routine must have been terrifying. Unlike Winters daily routine was a game of combat with deadly consequences. Love Band of Brothers!

I am sure I heard or read somewhere that he will be on one of these podcasts. He may be on the one for the final episode as that is one from Winter’s point of view. Fingers crossed. This has been a great series so far. There is a series of cast interviews on the History Hack channel (no Damian Lewis unfortunately) but they have a lot of the actors all being interviewed as a group and they have many interesting and funny stories to tell about boot camp and filming the series. It is worth a listen.

32:00 That story, I have a similar one. This comes from my friend Cecil Ford who was Able company 501st at Normandy. He was 17 when he jumped into France. They had survived and were linking up with larger units. He volunteered to go refill canteens for his squad, as he’s walking off down from their position to the river a mortar attack came in and killed all of them. He was the only one left. The outcomes of an act of kindness are unpredictable

When i told some of my clients i was going to Normandy this summer 2 said their fathers landed on Omaha. One on 6/6 in the 10:10 or 10:20 wave (based on the record and his dad’s recollection) and the other D + 1. The first guy wound up at the Bulge was captured with 8 others. In making an escape only he and his captain survived. Unreal

I am so loving this! And I am so very thankful to find this! It's November 14th, I somehow found all of this this morning, and I am listening to one episode after another, and I am going to finish all of these episodes before the day is over. As for Band of Brothers, I honestly can't even tell you how many times I've watched that. I still remember watching episode 1 those couple days before 9/11, and I was instantly hooked!

Very excited to hear from Damian Lewis. These have been some of the best podcasts I’ve ever heard and I just love the inter-spliced audio and grainy, edited in photos and slide shows. The series has been a major part of my life for maybe the last 14 years or so; from watching it may be a bit too young, at around 12, getting the DVDs and then the Blu-ray. Crossroads, perhaps being my favorite episode, a difficult and emotionally draining watch, and a very important breaking point for Winters in the series. A masterpiece that I think shall go down as the greatest thing put to television. I love the saturated look of the series, all the actors and every line to its dramatic core.

This is one of my favorite episodes in the series too: Tom Hanks direction is masterful, so much as the writing and final editing. I love the final scene in Bastogne: it tells all without a word. If I should be neat picking I have some doubts about the scene when Winters shoot the German soldier: iirc others in the Company recalled this German threw a grenade towards Winters first, and Winters threw it back before edging the banks and shooting. Besides this German had no weapons on him? How so? It seems this scene should have been filmed in both ways: one as it happened and one as impacted Winters' memory i.e. when he rides in the subway... I expect another Great Podcast with The Pacific! Thanks

I remember when I was interviewed for the movie, I told one of the writers that as I shot the German, he looked up at me and smiled. Well, I kept going with my story, but later, as it turns out, the writer wanted to play up the thing about the smile. He wanted to play that up as a flashback, the type of bad flashbacks you can have. I have flashbacks every day. But the writer wanted to play up that point. And that is why in the series that German is portrayed as a kid and why later on when I am in Paris they portray me looking at this kid on the train and having another flashback. It’s stupid, but I didn’t get the chance to review the scenes. I thought that I had somewhere that the train scene bothered Dick Winters.

😕 I wish someone would ask Erik what the 3 episodes was going to be about that they had cut. What more could they have told? Erik said that the veterans told even more stories after the book came out and he had it all on file. I wish HBO could release some of those stories and photos on an anniversary book or something.

Love this podcast, but come on ... too harsh on the vintage war movies. Those movies are true classics and great in their own right. Nothing of that era was portraying, nor capable of portraying real combat. Also, they were clearly for entertainment and morale if made during the war, and after, were just good films. I think it's too harsh to condemn them to the dustbin just because John Wayne portrayed a larger than life character, or the storylines were too positive. They had a purpose, and for the time were probably realistic in a lot of ways. Likewise, there is a fine line between glorifying war versus glorifying your soldiers and history .... that is what I think those films were trying to do largely. But back to the podcast ... love every second. Great stuff! Keep it going after the 10 are finished ... would love to hear this guy just go on about the series.

I dearly love this mini-series. I do have to wonder though, after all the declarations I've heard over the course of several of these podcasts, statements of being true to the story, 'getting it right', how they managed to get some of it wrong? I mean, these interviews, they're telling me, from their mouth, how important and sacred it was for them to do so. They set that bar. And yet, you have something as blatant as reporting that Albert Blythe didn't survive his wounds, or Dick Winters telling that German officer he could keep his side arm. I know Dick kept it, from watching an interview with him saying he kept it and never fired it. You don't have to be a Rhodes scholar to see that, something doesn't match up.

The issue about Blithe was dealt with in a previous episode of the podcast. The writers were relying on the memories and knowledge of the men of Easy who assumed Blithe had died of his injuries. As for the side arm, this is a dramatic retelling of a true story so a relatively small detail such as that was probably changed to serve the story of the episode. The fact is they got most things correct and that is evidenced by the actors stories on this podcast of the veterans responses to watching the episodes and visiting the sets during filming.

This whole podcast could have been infinitely better with someone else hosting it. Roger’s voice is like nails on a chalkboard to me, the way he chooses to emphasise certain parts of words, stretching them out… it ruins a great concept and makes it difficult to enjoy listening to the people I actually want to hear from.
