Agreed. The best part of 'G.I. Joe: The Movie" was the opening sequence...unfortunately it gets progressively worse from there...

Now as an adult when I look back on the film I seriously wonder what types of drugs these folks where taking. Firstly I too would like to partake and secondly they turned a Cold War analog into a HP Lovecraft novella (which of course makes it that much more awesome). They just should have called it At The Mountains of Cobra-la. Shep

This movie really pissed me off about Falcon. My dad was a Green Beret, he was highly disciplined and wouldn't shurk duty. He instilled that in us. The B.E.T. would have been a great toy. The snake spear was taken from a Conan movie. A snake was used as an arrow to kill someone. With it's weirdness, I still like it.

I agree this movie is pretty trippy. Thankfully, I can still enjoy it as a guilty pleasure. I am glad that in the G.I. Joe comic books Falcon is a much stronger character and is more line with how a person would expect a Green Beret to behave. In fact, I would say that Falcon's action figure is one of the better figures to come out of the late 1980's and his accessories rock. I find it really funny that even with the reputation this movie has, Hasbro eventually made action figures based on Big Lob and Pythona( even thought her figure was released under a different name and thankfully a convention exclusive like Big Lob was). Nemesis Enforcer even got an updated action figure in 2008(under the name Nemesis Immortal in a comic book two pack with Falcon). Personally, I would have not bothered with any of the Cobra La characters getting newer style action figures.

Another thing that pissed me off about Falcon is that he has no reason to be arrogant. Almost every character in this film has a bad ass moment where they defeat their nemesis on their own. Falcon constantly gets his ass handed to him, never does well in his training montage, and just got tossed around by Serpentor and Golobulus.

Buzz Dixon's original idea was to reveal that the true leader of Cobra Commander was some Nietzche-type college professor, and Cobra Commander usurped his command, but Hasbro didnt understand it. He later wrote the script as an e-book called The Most Dangerous Man in the World.

Gary Kurtz wanted to do a similar thing in the Star Wars films, freeze Han Solo in ESB, then kill him heroically in ROTJ in order to give the films more weight, but Lucas wanted a fairytale ending in order to protect toy sales. I guess the Ewoks were the Star Wars equivalent of Cobra-La as well, jumping the shark with absurdities in order to sell more toys.

I felt sorry for Cobra Commander. It was his fault he was a loser. He was even qualifying to be a military leader(Noble man with no training). He wasn’t even given any of the Cobra La technology, but had to make up his own . He was a completely out of his element since he had no understanding of humans or their cultures.

Coincidentally, I just watched this movie for the first time a few days ago. While I still enjoyed it enough, I agree with all of your criticisms. Transformers the Movie is one of my favourite movies ever, and now the intro to G. I. Joe the Movie is one of my favourite sequences of animation ever. I might watch that intro quite a few more times but I doubt I'll watch the rest of the movie very often.

the only reason i kind of like it is i was born in 91 and i am a daughter of a joe fan and watched this movie a shit ton and the transformers movie same amount of time and i agree with every single point you have said. i have a respect for it only for a get away from parents divorce other than that it was dog shit and that's taking it mildly. pythona and the guards where my fav they just where cool looking to me and i was sad when one got a figure but the other didn't. till $50 figure came out that is way to over priced for a kids toy. i've been a fan of joe for 27 year. grew up fucking up my dads collection so much hes really good at repainting them. to this day he knows the type of paint to what medals and insignias are on a lot of characters and he was a fan of comics not the cartoon. he's so much of a fan he is the one who oks the cosplays in one of the gi joe cosplay groups and makes the "life size" play sets for conventions yojoe and big lob out lol jk fyi i did think he was annoying to. best character in that scene has to be i can't remember if it's based on hama or one of his friends from vietnam like i know snake eyes is aka tunnel rat

Not trying to change somebody's mind but it is not funny to have dead action figures. Real warfare is not desirable and never something to get amusement from, however military toys are in some way of escapism for children and perhaps even adults to live a fantasy that otherwise would not be able to live. That is why Batman never kills Joker, Optimus Prime never kills Megatron and G.I. Joe never kills Cobra Commander. The everlasting conflict between good and evil is what all these toys and comics is about and saying that a boy who enjoys a cartoon where flying red and blue lasers never kill anyone does not understand the consequences of warfare is underestimating his metal capacities. Toys are toys and real life is real life, it is not funny just killing your action figures (unless they are replaceable such as troops), making them getting hurt and even fall into coma but just killing them is not funny. When I was a kid I had Bib Fortuna and although it is dead in the Star Wars universe I just could never kill a figure I really enjoyed.

actually, duke wasn't the only one set to die. the captured group of joes with Roadblock Jaye, the guy with the parrot, and snake eyes...amongst others, were all set to die. the scene where they escape but are caught by the vine things, you'll notice they wrap around d their necks. they were suppose to be strangled to death and left on display for the joes in the climax. and why roadblock says "that kills GI Joes" in one of his ryhms when waring Hawk about Cobra La, it killed them.

I appreciate the well rounded review and for me I will always remember the day in 1987 well as me my Mom and Grandfather went out to a swapmeet where I found some Star Wars figures and when I got home the freshly taped VHS casette was waiting that my stepdad taped off of bootleg WGN Chicago cable we got here in LA. What I lived was the then current wave of 1987 figures was already on the shelves and most were in my collection by the time it came out. The story has its funkiness but I really loved the introduction of the new characters and the stage they set for a new era of animated cartoons that didnt happen.

I hated this movie too and thought wtf about Cobra La. It did give us Jinx though so I'm grateful for that. I was always bothered by the fact she fought better blindfolded. Undergoing training without the use of her eyes is one thing. Insisting on wearing blindfolds in battle is another matter. I suppose those Cobra La and Lunartix figures would work well together.

What if Golobulus was lying? In my version of the movie, Golobulus is Dr Venom who was sent away by Cobra Commander to do Bioterror research. He invented the Cobra La (short for Cobra Laboratories) story to gain Serpentor and everyone else’s blind obedience. Cobra Commander was “once a man;” he didn’t get mutated until AFTER being hit by the spore. Everyone in Cobra La was experimented on and that is why they don’t look human. Story follows as normal, except Duke dies giving Falcon the motivation to get squared away. I honestly love the movie, but I definitely see everyone’s dislike and they do have good points.

I am surprised you did not bring up showing all the higher leadership, including Major Bludd, Storm Shadow, Baroness, Scrap-Iron, and how great it was for CC to scream "HOGWASH!" and stand up to Serpentor. Also that they showed the high level of security on Cobra island including CG's, Troopers and Officers (which haven't been out for years) scrambling to the alert and the scene where CC thinks it would be "Tragic" if anything happened to Serpentor and leads everyone the wrong way so Pythona can enter the inner chambers. After that it went down hill fast and lost focus. I think if they went the Ninja route, it would have been better.

I never considered G.I. Joe realistic. From its first airing, we knew G.I. Joe was sci-fi based. They were using weapons that shot rounds, that fired lasers instead of bullets. Even the comic series had some unrealistic moments that involved sci-fi. Serpentor. Now i do agree there are some less than stellar parts to the movie. I still loved it. I understand where Hoody Coco is coming from though. i never had access to the comics till a later age, so my G.I. Joe has always been to goofy sci-fi stuff. I actually loved seeing Cobra-La as the one time villain of this movie. I do think Hoody Coco has it wrong about the creation of Cobra. Cobra was created by Cobra Commander. Cobra Commander was just sent out in the world to take it over. It wasn't established as to how he should do it. I liked how this also ended up being a redemption arc for Cobra Commander. He was a bumbling idiot that managed to form a terrorist organization, only to never be able to fully realize the vision of world domination. In the end his one act was not to take over the world, but save it from Cobra La.

28:00 - BUT we've also seen that Cobra Commander has a normal human skin whenever he wore a hood and one time we saw that he had normal human hands as well. That just doesn't mix well with the Cobra-La origin where we're supposed to believe that all this time he had a blue skin. Even his eye colour is different! IMO, only way to make sense of this is that Cobra-La mind controlled* Cobra higher ups and that whole origin was a lie to easily take over Cobra's forces. Also, notice that when we see CC in present day having a blue skin that he's in the process of mutating into a reptilian creature. And then you have the whole "I was once a man" thing, perhaps indicating the mind control was fading away as there was no longer any need for it. [[*If they planted the idea of Serpentor then surely that means they're capable of messing with peoples minds?]]

In my opinion G.I.Joe the Movie was simply to sci-fiish. G.I. Joe always took place in a sci-fi universe but it fited mostly into the real world in terms of the characters, vehicles and logic. All this comes to an end with the Movie. Mutants from a hidden parallel world, with living vehicles and all that silly crap... this was all a bit too much for my liking. Transformers The Movie was much better. I was sad as Optimus Prime and plenty of other older characters died in the movie. But hey.... that's what results from war. Heroes die and it leaves scars in our souls. BTW: I cried more when Old B.O.B in the movie "The black Hole" died. That really got me traumatised at the age of 8 :(

I loved LT Falcon in the comics and the figure. However, as an Army Vet I can tell you that the movie Falcon is a POS. First, he is a green beret and he would be a quiet professional. Second, he is an Officer and would be much more professional as well as out ranking Duke and other NCO’s on the Joe Team. I always used him as the mission team leader as a kid. With flint and duke being subordinate. Even Flint out ranks duke lol. So basically, Hawk gives orders to Lt falcon and then Falcon gives orders to duke. Anyway, I agree, I hated the TV and Movie Falcon. Also him trying hooked on drugs? Unlikely, again he is Special Forces and an Officer. Falcon in the movie acts like a shit bag private and would have washed out of Special forces selection with his attitude

Yeah, the ranking system in G.I.Joe was never well thought out. Some other things that have never made sense include Snake-Eyes, who can't speak due to an accident during training, still being on the team rather than being given a medical discharge. Oh, and the idea of Sergeant Slaughter...at all. He just sucks. I can't even put into words how much he and he alone drove me from G.I. Joe. Okay, the changing to bright neon colors for some of the characters didn't help, but mostly is was the wrestler goof.

@ted37846 In the original Marvel comics (I think it was issue s 24 - 27), they had Snake-Eyes get in a helicopter accident as he was trying to save Scarlet. A burst or flame hit him in the face, scarring him and destroying his vocal chords. As for Sergeant Slaughter....uggg. I don't care if he was a marine or not, the dude just flat out sucked. He killed GI Joe for me. I hated wrestling and including it in GI Joe just ruined it.

For myself I do like watching this movie as my guilty pleasure movie, BUT... I did agree with you on the problems that this movie has and funny enough when they released this movie in Japan they went ahead and let duke die. I am saddened how they made Falcon in this movie is a giant jerk I rather had Jinx as the main character (luckily newer media did a redo of Falcon's character) I do like Cobra-La, BUT I prefer other comics after the marvel series which made them a separate faction instead of having ties with Cobra (Hell I wouldn't mind if they brought them back they give them a new name and make it a 3rd faction, but I can understand if no one wants them.) I will say if you want a better joe animated experience I wholeheartedly recommend G.I. Joe resolute which had characters die and have the stakes high. Sadly they were going to continue in that fashion until hasbro wanted to do the hub series and went forward with the renegades' cartoon (which I do enjoy). anyway to shorten this. I can understand why you did not like this and your reason of not wanting to see it again, but as for myself it's still a guilty pleasure for me :) thank you for the video HCC

I liked that they started Falcon off with some problems and allowed him to grow over the five days this aired as a mini series. It was a nice little character arc, and more than we usually see in cartoons. Don Johnson put a lot of life into his performance, though you could tell he enjoyed playing the jerk version early on better than the reformed Falcon of the final act.

I know I'm super late. But on the topic of cobra commander's origin being a last-minute decision (which it obviously was) in the episode "knotting cobra's coils" during the scene where tomax a xamot are trying to pry him of the ships control panel after being magnetized to it, you can see 1-3 single frames of his neck and chin which are in a Caucasian color. Also, when he's disguised in the subway, he has human hands. This was definitely a last-minute decision for the movie. I would have much rather they had had him be revealed as a human with a tragic backstory. Also, the intro to this film is beautiful!

I have thought of one way to tie Cobra to Cobra-La while having Cobra Commander still remain human. So here’s my idea: CC was once an explorer who went on an expedition in an unexplored region of the Himalayas. During the expedition, he is captured by Cobra-La guards and is tortured for some time, including being disfigured by the spores. He is eventually taken to Golobulus for judgement. Golobulus initially wants the explorer executed, but the explorer begs for his life, stating he would serve Golobulus. Golobulus decides that perhaps having a human on their side could be useful. Golobulus agrees to spare the mans life and sends him back out into the world to raise an army and conquer Earth in the name of Cobra-La. The explorer would become Cobra Commander and lead the terrorist organization of Cobra. Not a perfect concept, and I’m sure there are plenty of holes in it, but this was really the best thing I could come up with

This movie was so bad. It is unfortunate because the opening sequence was great. Then the film started and it was okay...until they introduced Cobra La, CC becoming an actual snake, a lack of Snake Eyes, and of course, it was the beginning of Sergeant Slaughter. Ugggg..... I wish the makers of this film started by watching the original GI Joe miniseries, the one with the MASS Device. That was a much better movie/mini series. As for "The Transformers The Movie", I loved the first half of the film. What you said about the realistic depiction of war, I agree. But what about the goofiness of the sharkticons and Wheelie and "Dare to be Stupid" and Wreck-Gar? The entire second half was so painful to watch that it cancelled out the good things from the first half.

Thanks for the review. Just as I described on Facebook in a post about this video...."Top Tier" I will have to admit to liking the this movie a bit. I think because, at the time, GI Joe was more sort of on the back burner for me.... I was able to collect some of the figures, and vehicles, and I watched the show when it was on, but I was more tied to the Transformers....and Robotech (there is a cartoon that put the consequences of war in full view of its audience). I would gain a new appreciation for the joes much later when I got to follow some of Mr. Hamma's work in the comics through reprints in trade paperback form. It would figure I'd dig his work on GIJoe....he is one of my favorite writers on another property he spent some time writing. Once again, thank you HCC. This was a fantastic video, as always.

(maybe destro too) I hear chucles was actually snake eyes in disguise hence no talking. I liked big lob he deserved a figure. ending zartan would have been nice and dukes death should have stayed as such I actually thought he was dead till a toy commercial had him come back. and it sounded like its making was a huge mess to begin with and maybe someone should have been slapped.

I enjoyed the Transformers movie for the same harsh reasons like HCC did. Sure, they offed my bot Prowl (to sell toys) but I was old enough to understand violence and conflicts. As a bullied kid you have to learn about these things early on so the animated violence in itself was nothing. Instead it was the little sting that they actually killed the characters to make room for new toys instead of fading them into silent background characters and that I was so invested to actually get a little emotional response for fictional characters. Well played. As for the G.I. Joe movie… I like infiltration part in the beginning, then everyone acts like retarded dicks. Burgess Meredith had a very cool voice though.

Hmm, what alot of things that I think is overlooked is the"inhumanoids"! That fact that a modern society and civilization has to battle something unknown and older predating humanity! Certain episodes of the original series seems to show how modern science has deviated in new directions! The first introduction of cobra commanders face seen for the first time eating in front of destroying in the M.A.S.S. 5 part series, the further adventures of g.i.Joe with the fatal fluffier in the pyramid of darkness, the synthoids in both the attempt of cobra to replace military personnel at the command level with loyal synthetic people, plus the 2 part episode involving shipwreck and his romantic relationship with Mara, who was a experimental cobra project who had gills and could breath underwater! The revelation of lady jaye as a distant cousin of destro and the cthulu creature under the family castle! if you top it off the creation of serpentor and the sequel episode of a post episode of cobra commander using a discharged "dialtone" used to communicate with the same creature under castle destroyed to attack serpentor! There is aspects of cobra having technology that was out of the normal range of conventional weapons with the "red rocket" restaurants chain financed by Extensive Enterprises and the photon warheads mounted to the missiles on the restaurant roof!

ok so bravo brother. excellent review. I really appreciate the disclaimer at the beginning as well. So I found this review very enlightening and professional and surprisingly un biased. I applaud that. I actually agreed with most things that you said here even though i admit that I do like this movie very much. Yes there are aspects that I wish could have been better and you pointed out some very valid points as to why the movie really does not work and is a bit of a mess. I am so happy you had positive things to say about Sgt. Slaughter because to me he made the movie. I guess the only thing I really disagree with you on is the origin of Cobra Commander. It is very rushed and I don't think we get the whole story here, but I never did dig the origin in the comics and the fact that he was JUST a human being. He just had to be more than that somehow. But kudos for pointing out in the end The Commander was the hero. Thank you for that. So in conclusion I have to say you could be the best critic I have ever heard because you didnt actually attack the movie like most critics do and try to bend peoples will to your own. You presented the facts and pointed out the strengths and weaknesses and even though you did in the end say I dont like this movie, you also said draw your own conclusions. Great review!

My own take on G.I. Joe: The Movie- I saw this is in episodic increments when it was on TV around 1988. I never saw the movie in theater and didn't see the whole movie start to finish until I rediscovered G.I Joe in my college years. I didn't care for the movie as a whole. In my waning year of G.I. Joe was 1987 when this movie came out, I really fell out with the Sunbow series. The episodic nature of the Sunbow series meant that there were little to no consequences to actions. And what was kind of disappointing was that there were some really good characters in 1986 G.I. Joe line-up. And it's really important to note how HCC788 did some comparisons to Transformers at the time, because I got more into Transformers for a time than G.I. Joe because there were consequences. Transformers were blowing up whole planets like Paradron while Life-Line was jilting the love of Bree Van Mark. One has more urgency than the other. By the time this movie came out I had for the most part moved on from G.I. Joe into Transformers (pre- Headmasters mind you) and X-Men comics. I did get back to collecting G.I. Joes again with Destro and the Iron Grenadiers and Storm Shadow in 1988. I like the 1988 line. 1987, not so much. By the time I had seen this movie I had already seen Zartan kill Serpentor in the comics with a bow and arrow, and so any consequences that Sunbow would have had here were null to none. I like the Rawhides, that's about it.
