The reason why Cobra Commander and Starscream are so familiar sounding is that they have the same voice actor. RIP Chris Latta, one of the voices of my childhood. The Dreadnoks are Australian. Duke was originally supposed to die, but the reactions from the Transformers film where Optimus Prime died were so negative the studio changed the script.
@gregsaum1701Ай бұрын
“So unnecessarily awesome” is exactly what GI Joe was! This movie is actually the series finale of the original Sunbow cartoon which ran for 2 seasons. The cartoon was a marketing ploy by Hasbro to sell toys, pure and simple. But there was real talent behind the scenes. Most of the voice actors were experienced performers of the 70s and 80s. The reason why Cobra Commander sounds like Starscream is because they were both voiced by the amazing Chris Latta. Indeed this movie was the first time we saw his face. Throughout the series it was teased that under his mask was a disfigured man. Much of the movie was a bit of a left turn: never before was Cobra-La hinted at in the series. Made just for this movie and really never heard from again. Sgt Slaughter was actually a professional wrestler IRL and was brought in as a character in the series 2nd season. Duke was the leader of the Joes in the first season and very much the Optimus Prime of the series (year Hawk outranked him, but Duke was THE hero). The original plan was indeed to kill of the character in this movie, but because of the fallout from killing Optimus in the TF movie, it was changed to Duke going into a coma (notice how all of the dialogue about him being in a coma is very obviously added in…the animation was definitely drawn to show Duke’s death). Definitely a copout. Sadly this movie was the end of the Sunbow run for GI Joe. There was a plan for a 3rd season following this movie, but Hasbro went with a cheaper animation studio which essentially reset the series. I will say of the two (TF and GI Joe) I much more like this film. I just feel like the story is better and is more relatable than a story in a “futuristic” 2005. In any case, maybe check out the first miniseries of GI: Joe. It’s about 90 minutes and introduces the main characters (at least those who existed at the time). YO JOE!!!

Both G. I. Joe and Transformers were made by the same studio, but G. I. Joe was marketed towards a slightly older group of children (like 10-12) while Transformers was more towards the 6-9 age group. While G. I. Joe wasn't allowed to kill anyone due to FCC rules, there were injuries to show that war isn't a game and people can get seriously hurt. Duke was supposed to die, (largely because his action figure wasn't being sold any more). Hasbro found out about this and decided to do the same thing with Optimus Prime. Due to production delays, Transformers: The Movie was released first and we know the backlash over Optimus's death. Thus Duke just went into a coma. Burgess Meredith starred in "The story of G.I. Joe", a 1945 film playing WWII war correspondent Ernie Pyle. Sgt. Slaughter (real name Robert Remus) is a real-life pro wrestler who's character was made into an action figure and cartoon character. Buzz Dixon, the writer for G. I. Joe, had originally established Cobra Commander as the top boss through 75 episodes (2 five-episode miniseries and then a 65 episode season). Then Hasbro told him they were creating a Cobra Emperor, and Dixon came up with two possible stories. 1) Cobra created a new leader (Serpentor) because they were fed up with Cobra Commander's repeated failures, or 2) Cobra Commander was just the front-man for a larger organization. Hasbro decided on both, so the 1986 season began with the creation of Serpentor and this was the second part. Cobra-La was just a placeholder name but Hasbro execs liked it.

Many years ago (early 2000s, around 2003 or so) during an online discussion I casually mentioned in passing something about the original G1 _The Transformers_ cartoon being anime, and I received _several_ very heated responses to the effect of _"The Transformers is absolutely _*_not_*_ anime, then, now, or ever!"_ I replied to these "arguments" by making four big points: 1): The term _anime_ is simply a Japanese adoption and adaptation of the English word _animation._ In Japan, _every_ cartoon is an anime. 2): _The Transformers_ began its existence as a Hasbro combination of two original Japanese toy lines, _Micro Change_ and _Diaclone,_ and it continues to exist as a partnership between Hasbro and the Japanese company Takara. 3): Both _The Transformers_ and _GI Joe_ were _animated by Toei,_ the same Japanese studio that animated _Dragon Ball._ 4): Between G1 and now (2003ish) there had already been several animated series based on _The Transformers_ that had been produced entirely by Japanese people in Japan, and only afterwards localized and dubbed into English... just like any other anime. (and since then there have been even more.) Of course, all of these points went right over their heads and their only response was that "Transformers isn't anime!"

So some behind the scene knowledge. Actually in the movie they had killed Duke off. I mean he got stabbed in the heart. You really cannot survive that. But then the Transformers Movie came out and after little kiss were weeping over Optimus dying, they changed Duke's death to being in a coma. That is why there is no animation in the dialogue over it. They say Duke slipped in a coma and came out in post. That is why you will notice no animation was shown where you see the character actually mouth those lines as animation was done. So they just inserted dialogue when they saw the camera pointed elsewhere.

So GI Joe started as a toyline back in the 1960s as 12 in figures (and so action figure was coined so they wouldnt be called dolls). UK they were known as action man figures. The term GI Joe was used as a description of your average soldier dating back to WWII meaning ‘Goverment Issue Joe’. When 1982 rolled around, the brand was retooled to the ‘Real American Hero’ line and the figuere changed to the 3 3/4in figures with if i remember was 10 points of articulation making them the same size as star wars figures but more posable making it feasible to give them playsets. Along with the figures came comic books and then came the tv show. It made GI Joe a more specialized group then even the most specialized military groups and became a anti-terrorist group against Cobra. Although not the case, Duke was debuted as the field commander of the Joes and then flint as second in command. (There is a easteregg for Flint in the third season of transformers). Like any big toy company, they too planned to kill duke off and were hoping to introduce new characters to refresh the toyline. Transformers came to movie first and they saw the poor reaction to Prime’s death and many old school fans still blame hot rod for that. It was newsworthy. Seeing kids on the news crying coming out of theatres at the death of prime. So for gi joe they dubbed in the lines and released it on tv /vhs instead to minimize damage I loved the 80s and i loved both GI Joe and transformers.

So this movie actually marked the end of the Sunbow/Marvel episodes.. Marvel had been producing comic books for Transformers and G.I. Joe and they were somewhat responsible for writing both shows utilizing in many of the same voice actors, soundtrack etc, they produced 95 episodes before the movie. DIC had started producing a mini series that followed after the movie, it was meant to be a continuation of the Sunbow series, because production started at the same time as the movie, guess who's not in it!? That's right.. Duke is absent.. Because he was dead.

Back in the 60’s-70’s, “GI Joe” was just a soldier figure-doll in realistic battle gear-Until the toy company became a favorite target of anti-Vietnam protesters, and the company softened him into a James Bond adventure specialist. When Hasbro resurrected the “Joe team vs. Cobra” during the Reagan 80’s to sell high-tech vehicles, it just hit that sweet spot with our Transformers-era boy imaginations…. 😁
@carlpeterson8182Ай бұрын
GI Joe went through a transformation in the early 80's. Originally GI Joe was a much larger doll (Like the size of Ken (Barbie) but cooler) and not really on a team. He was in the military and later went on discovery missions. There were tons of toys. In the early 80's (1983 I believe) the cartoon came out and GI Joe became a special forces team battling Cobra. The figures were then the size of Star War figures. I was 11 so I was at the tail end of the age the show was written. It was fun show because they blew things up all the time and shot at point blank range, but they were not dying all the time. No one could really hit the soldiers.

Everyone else has since denounce the "Cobra-La" nonsense. Yo Joe! Fact: The movie's opening sequence with the G.I. Joe soldiers saving the Statue of Liberty from the Cobra invaders was originally intended to be the climax in the earlier drafts. The director and storyboard artists decided to salvage it and turn it into the film's opening, so newcomers could understand the premise of the series. Studio Hacks Fact: Mindful that the television series was being compared unfavorably to Robotech (1985) for its sanitized depiction of combat, the producers decided to have a death scene for Duke (Michael Bell) to give the movie a harder edge, but upper management forced them to add a line saying that he only went into a coma.
@mr.osclasses5054Ай бұрын
To clarify your final point: The management was going to keep it in the movie that he died, I'm even 99% sure you can see the animation of Doc saying "He's dead" when it happens. It was the huge backlash six months or a year earlier to the death of Optimus Prime in the Transformers movie that caused them to change it to a coma. Kids were so scarred from his death because it was completely out of the blue (nothing was even hinted at in the marketing or trailers for the movie that he would die) that parents took up a massive letter writing campaign into Hasbro and forced their hand. It was the biggest misstep Hasbro did, killing Prime, and it had unintended consequences of making them decide to change this movie to a direct to VHS release and showed it as like a 3-part episode when the new season came out in 1987.

Like Bumblebee in Transformers, people always think that these characters had much bigger roles until they watch these movies and see, that no...not really. They only became more popular later on in their own respective franchises. I'm glad to see you enjoyed it!

There was several levels of G. I.Joe. The main level was the toy line of action figures. This was originally supported by the cool animated commercials which eventually led to the series and then this movie. And if you only stop at this point then you’ll only have been exposed to the cheesy marketing stuff that is known as G.I.Joe to sell the toys. And “Knowing is half the battle.” The lesser known and more serious grounded G.I.Joe and Transformers stories were the comics. Sure the cartoons were good but the more grittier stuff was the comics from Marvel. Larry Hama was the man that turned the cheese off and gave us the official authentic story about the characters. This is the top level stuff of the G.J.Joe and the Transformers the comics. The comics where superior to the series. If your one of the ones that just watched the cartoons then you’ll have not experienced the greatness of what the comics were. Sure if it’s eighties cheesyness you want then the cartoons will satisfy you. I not putting down the cartoons because yes I watched them. I grew up watching them but the better story was the comics.

Love the vid. About the Duke coma thing, GI Joe the Movie was written 1st and then the Transformers , both cartoons are made by the same studio, when the guys in TF office heard the Joe guys were killing Duke, they got the idea to repeat the same thing for Transformers. Now there were some production issues with the animation with GI Joe which lead to Transformers coming out first and after the backlash by parents, they added in the coma lines in the last minute. The idea around killing off Duke was Joe fans were a bit older, Gi Joe started in '82 and Transformers in '84 and would in theory would be able to handle the concept of a solider dying in war, for Transformer the idea was simply get the 1984 toy out of the cartoon and replace them with the 1987 characters from the movie, neither suspected kids of the 80's would latch on to these characters for the next 40 years .

The interesting conflict(s)... Cobra Commander vs Serpentor, where Cobra was losing its military terrorist roots and becoming more a blind cult loyal to Serpentor. We see mirroring trials of Falcon/Cobra Commander and history reveals of them both, who they are, where they came form. One gets to redeem himself, losing his brother inspires him to be a good solider, while Cobra Commander kind of gets put off in the side being turned into a snake. Most of the villains would die, Serpentor/Cobra La/etc, to make way for Cobra Commander to return in season 3 of Sunbow, but it never happened because the toon got turned over to DIC and that was the end of GIJoe's cultural imprint. IMO.

I always liked the super mundane backstory. Where Cobra Commander started off as a used car salesman. But if you want to see him in all his glory, watch Resolute.

1960s G.I. Joe action figures were 12"-sized conventional military personnel. 1980s G.I. Joe action figures were Hasbro-produced 3 3/4"-sized toys. Current G.I. Joe action figures are Hasbro-produced 6", highly articulated and accessorized toys known as the "G.I. Joe Classified" line. The 1980s comic published by Marvel was meant to advertise the toy line but was written with authenticity and complexity by Larry Hama unlike the fantastical cartoon. Larry Hama has written practically every issue and the series is still ongoing 40 years later now published by Image comics! The cartoon produced by Sunbow featured several five-part mini-series that are a lot of fun including: 1983: The MASS Device 1984: The Revenge of COBRA 1985: The Pyramid of Darkness 1986: Arise, Serpentor, Arise! The 1987 "G.I. Joe: The Movie" introduced the new Cobra-La angle which was rejected by fans who, nonetheless, had a blast with the film! In 1989, DIC produced a third cartoon season that began with another 5-part mini-series: 1989: Operation: Dragonfire The live-action movies with the Rock are trash that are sillier than the cartoon and vastly inferior to the comic. The Dreadnoks are Australian biker mercenaries with a couple of members who have Cockney backgrounds led by a master of disguise called Zartan. Zartan was subjected to genetic experimentation and exhibits chameleonic abilities. Snake-Eyes, the Joe commando, is to G.I. Joe what Wolverine is to X-Men! He's a deeply sympathetic bada$$ with a mysterious past, a pet wolf and ninja training who has a soft spot for red-headed Scarlett. His arc is a major sub-plot of the comic series.

duke was supposed to die, but after the backlash from the transformers movie they quickly changed it so that he went in to a coma instead. it;s why you never see him again after his injury. flint was supposed to be the face of the new joe line.

I always adored GI Joe when I was a kid. Burgess Meredith was in a classic movie called “The Story of GI Joe.” It’s such a great movie and it’s on KZbin. Yo Joe! 🫡

Duke did indeed die at first before it was released but after the huge backlash to optimus primes death the year earlier in transformers the movie the "he went into a coma" and "He woke up" were added later last second! Watch the scene without sound its clear duke died!

Man, I used to watch this movie so many times as a kid. I dreamed for many years they could just remake it as a live action movie but it’s never happened hehe. Btw, I’m liking the new digs.

Cobra Commander even shows up in Transformers in the far future of 2006 in the third season. GI Joe was set in the 80s. By 2006, Cobra was defeated, and Cobra Commander sold his inventions to other groups. I guess the snake thing did last for Cobra Commander

SO, Chris Latta is the actor who does both Starscream and Cobra Commander. If you want to see him in a live action movie, he has a small part in the original Road House (1989) movie in which he offers to let another guy touch his wife's boobs for $20. It's pretty funny.

The voice for Cobra Commander also did Starscream.

Holy crap! Someone FINALLY did a reaction for this!! What can I say.. After Hasbro ROYALLY screwed up by killing Optimus Prime in Transformers the movie this came out but not in theaters. Falcon was to this movie what Hot Rod was to Transformers the movie.

The best GIJoe cartoon is the MASS device cartoon. Anyone looking to start just start there

The real crime of this movie was that the toys for it sucked. They came up with an unbelievably cool enemy to revitalize the franchise... and put zero effort into making it playable. I would have loved to have weird alien pod vehicles and enemies... but what we got was worm guy and kite man.
@sidsigmaprime6347Ай бұрын
Both GI Joe and transformers have a opening story arc which is several episodes which is about the length of a full movie
@TrueKoalaKnightАй бұрын
Yeah, not killing Duke was a direct result of them killing off Optimus Prime in the Transformers movie. They nearly killed the Transformers franchise when they killed off their most iconic character. So when they did the G.I.Joe movie they changed their mind about killing off characters. Hell, the fallout from removing Optimus Prime from Transformers was so bad that they cancelled the theater release of the G.I. Joe movie and released it on TV & video to save money. Not killing off Duke was a no-brainer at the time.

These are all toys that one could play with. Those were the days where toys was so badass. I owned a good number of what you saw here.
@joeconcepts5552Ай бұрын
I think it would be good for you to go back and watch an earlier miniseries to see the bigger “classic” characters of the cartoon. And the 5 episodes work out to be the length of a short movie. The second one, G.I. Joe: The Revenge of Cobra would be a good one. And all the episodes are free on KZbin.

Hard to believe this movie was first shown on HBO on release day Not the Movie theaters as you would think. Duke was originally supposed to die but because of the bad outcome of the Transformers Movie Prime dying Hasbro last minute changed the story board of the Joes, as well as the main story was changed. The original story line matched the Beginning opening with Joes fighting for Freedom at Liberty Island against Cobra changed for reasons unknown to this day. The character known as "Nemesis Enforcer" the Big purple Guy with Wings was changed after the movie released due to a copyright claim that an 80's hair band had that took Hasbro to court over, reasons the Character now a days is called "Nemesis Immortal" yes, the Band won the case over Hasbro on the name change. As for GIJOE action figures the New Classified series released an exclusive San-Diego-Com Joe character never made ever before Cobra Commander "Once-A-Man" half man and Cobra snake now making it one of the rarest figures to get your hands on of the Joe line. Glad I got 2 of them.

Congratulations on the new place but... this is literally the first presentation on your channel where I haven't actually seen the movie, and the lack of opacity and the watermark make it impossible to tell what's happening in it. Oh, nice leg though. (Never mind -- the disclaimer overlay went by too fast for me the first time.) Random thought -- Imagine if they had an ADR at the end of Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan: "Spock's alive! He came out of his coma!" Random thought 2 -- wouldn't it be fun if all the GIJOE characters were CGI replaced with the Paw Patrol?
@thomasthompson2431Ай бұрын
....... Following the outrage from the Death of Optimus Prime in the Transformers the movie, it was rewritten that Duke went into a coma.
@torbnymublous4403Ай бұрын
Let's be clear, g.i. joe was a long running cartoon. But not like others it was more like a tv series with a timeline and introduction of new characters the joe team or cobra would run into ever expanding their team. Until the cobra commander brought to life serpentor. Only then did they create this movie. Like they did with the X-Files. Then went right back to the tv show.
@doctorcorps5590Ай бұрын
Cobra commander is only shown to be reptilian in the movie later cartoon episodes retcon the movie and his face isn't ever shown
@eidrenkeeg6487Ай бұрын
You should look into reacting to the beginning eps of the series. There were 2 or 3 different "movies" that were split into 5ep each to kick off the series. One had to do with a pyramid. "Pyramid of Darkness".... I think
@mcdemuthАй бұрын
Transformers & G.I. Joe were made by the same company and had several of the same voice actors and they used the much of the same music... Duke was supposed to die, until people complained about how they killed Optimus Prime in the Transformers.

This movie was very good as far as the drama, seriousness, and action goes. But the fantasy / sci fi elements in this one is a step too far for many. Though the regular episodes included such things now and then.
