아브라함의 아들 이삭(아내 리브가) 이삭의 아들 야곱(아내 라헬, 레아)은
성경에서도 흔치 않은 아리따운 미녀와 결혼한 사람들이기도 했습니다.
이스라엘의 조상 야곱의 경우 외사촌 여동생 라헬과
7년동안 삼촌 라반의 집안 일을 해주는 댓가로 결혼할 수 있었습니다.
7년 계약이 마친 날 신혼밤
장인 외삼촌 라반은 야곱이 원했던 라헬 대신 그 언니 레아를 바꿔치기 해서
신혼 방에 몰래 들여보냈습니다.
다음날 일어나보니 레아라는 것을 알고 발끈했지만
언니를 두고 동생부터 시집보내지 않는다는 그 지역 전통 때문에 어쩔 수 없이
다시 7년을 더 일해 주고 라헬과 결혼할 수 있었습니다.
야곱은 언니 레아에게서 여섯 아들을 낳았지만 라헬을 사랑했습니다.
라헬에게서 태어난 아들이 열한째 요셉이었습니다.
야곱은 라헬에게서 어렵게 얻은 늦둥이 요셉을 사랑하고 아꼈습니다.
그런데 형들이 요셉을 미워하고 시기해서 애굽 노예로 팔아버렸으니
야곱이 얼마나 상심했겠습니까?
죽은 줄 알았던 요셉이 살아있고 애굽의 총리가 되었다는 소식을
아들들에게 전해 들었을 때 야곱은 기절하기까지 했습니다.
요셉의 성공으로 애굽에서 부족함 없는 삶을 누린지 17년이 흐른
야곱의 147세 되던 해 (BC 1,830년) .
임종을 맞은 야곱은 그의 재산을 자식들에게 분배했습니다.
야곱은 열한째 요셉의 두 아들을 야곱의 아들이라 주장하는 방법으로
장자에게 주는 두 몫의 유산을 결국 요셉에게 주었습니다.
