Great performance. How i would have loved to have seen the band around this time. I had to wait till 1988/89 till i managed to catch them. The Crossing is one of my all time fave albums. I discovered the album around 1983ish and it helped shape my musical taste. Still hugely fond of the album to this day.

This was the first time i saw the band, then maybe TOTP then im sure this was repeated. Either way it made up my mind to go to the Reading Festival Aug 83 when they played a rousing set on the Friday night, next time was the Seer tour and our local venue in Stoke on Trent was packed to the rafters, following year on the Peace in Our Time tour i guess the game was sort of up as the venue was half full. One great memory from the 86 tour - they played the set, played the encores and the crowd was shouting singing, just would'nt stop and so they came back again and Stuart said "we've got no more songs to play" - so they started the set again!, cant remember how many before the venue management pulled the plug. A truly great band that should have followed the likes of U2, but they gave us The Crossing - end of.....
@thedrumdoctor Жыл бұрын
@@PurpleRecords1972 they didn’t have a good crack at America like U2 did. Mark told me Stuart wanted to be a dad as much as possible which is fair enough. They had plenty of support opportunities out there but the time on the road wasn’t really compatible with having a young family. Cracking America has always been a younger band’s game. Otherwise it’s going to push home life to the extremes. Same deal with Simple Minds according to Mel Gaynor. If a record label detects a hint that a band isn’t prepared to make the personal sacrifices to break the US market they’ll pull all American promo budgets. Well at least that was the deal back then. By the time U2 released War Paul McGuiness knew he had a band prepared to go all the way to crack America and he knew he had a good pitch to ask Island Records for the financial support and get their US partners working on promo. I knew a few bands who blew it back then with the US opportunity. Most get homesick and literally can’t handle the mental aspect of spending months and months on the road like performing robots. If Big Country had been Stuart’s first bite of the cherry instead of the Skids, maybe the US would have been possible to tackle properly.
@gmansi Жыл бұрын
@@PurpleRecords1972 "i guess the game was sort of up as the venue was half full." 😔 The thing is that they couldn't remain original if they kept repeating themselves and by dropping the sound of bagpipes they partly lost their charm. Could be?

We went to Nick Heyward the next night though....10p for any journey on public transport in Merseyside that night. Watched this when it was broadcast but I didn't have a video recorder so I recorded the mono TV audio on a cassette tape and played it to death! Got to see them later on in September when they played Liverpool again and met them afterwards which gave me chance to ask Mark loads of questions. Such an epic fail going to see Nick Heyward the night after this gig but that's how it goes when you're a teenager!
