Like anybody alive and listening to rock 'n roll in 1983 I heard "In a Big Country" on the radio and at parties a lot. Somehow, and to my regret, I am just now discovering how good a band this was. If only someone had sat me down in '83 and made me listen to the entirety of The Crossing. Alas, no such luck then and I've spent 40 years missing out on enjoying the band. Why they weren't bigger and on everyone's lips then, I cannot fathom. They measure up to the best of that era without breaking a sweat. But luck has arrived and I am finally out of the woods when it comes to Big Country. I managed it only this week by taking a chance on the BBC's collection of their live in-studio and on-stage recordings of the band. Phenomenal collection. Find it. It is, also, just in the last few days that I learned Stuart had died in 2001. So, as I celebrate the find, I grieve the loss. Lord, life is a trip. So, what to do, but to be inspired by the tunes to what greatness I may still have in me and stay alive while I am alive. RIP, Stuart. You will not be forgotten.

Absolutely brilliant performance. A true testament of how great they already were from their first album and tour in 83. Followed up by a UK #1 album Steeltown, then The Seer with a huge hit Look Away, it is still a mistery to me why they never became a big arena / stadium act like U2 or Simple Minds in those days. They had it all. And they had Stuart. Miss the man... like a garden in the forest that the world will never see.

I know this has been available to watch for at least the past 5 years, but I'm so, so grateful that it is available, because oh my GOD is it GLORIOUS, especially in such beautiful quality! I just discovered Big Country in 2023 ("discovered" as in: beyond only "In a Big Country"), and since first watching this only a few months ago, I now put it on when I'm bored or need something on in the background only to inevitably be pulled in by this sensational performance...which is to say that I've happily watched this in its entirety several times now, and I will continue to watch it more as long as it remains available on KZbin! 🤞🏻I don't even like the songs "Angle Park" or "Balcony," but damn if I don't like this version of "Angle Park" at least because it's performed so earnestly! I think this band is so excellent at converting non-believers - as in, if you think you don't like their music, listen again...and then you won't stop wanting to listen to them! 🤣That's been my experience, at least! The performance in this of "In a Big Country" is my favorite ever (I LOVE getting to hear Tony's harmonies so clearly!!) and "Porrohman" is stunning.💖Anyway, sorry for writing a novel, but thank you so much for sharing this. I and my mental health are so grateful to you, @BC1000Stars. This is probably one of my all-time favorite live shows (to watch in retrospect; especially for me, as I'm in my 20s) by any band to watch, and I am more than happy to rewatch. :')

Subsequent albums never came close to The Crossing. Steeltown really hurt their momentum. I remember when it came out, expecting the same energy level and it left me and my mates flat. I appreciate it now but it still doesn't excel or excite like The Seer and Buffalo Hunters.

Thank you so much for curating and sharing this footage, and for all your content. For those of us that never had the chance to see them live this is such a privilege, especially hearing The Storm, gives me shivers like lightning is about to strike. Just getting to hear the bits and pieces of commentary as well, I love hearing Stuart's speaking voice, when his accent really comes through. The wee fragments that start to bring all the stories together. It's very grounding to hear Scottish people on KZbin, somehow, while we're all in isolation and not getting to talk to each other as much. If anyone reading this feels isolated, no matter what year you read this in, you're not alone. Stay Alive.

Thanks for posting all of the shows. It sure is a treat for a guy who is just now rediscovering Big Country. Used to listen to them back in the day but never got to see them live living in the US. Personally, Big Country is one of those bands who are so much better live than on a sterilized album. So much of their emotion is stripped away in the recording process.
