Hello, and welcome back to the channel!
For this month's documentary, we are at UBC for the PM rush.
UBC is the western terminus for a bulk of the east-west transit bus services in Vancouver south of False Creek. As asynchronous learning transitions into in-person attendance, buses load up with students headed back to their residences. Active since 1945, the main bus loop has been renovated three times: in 1983, 2004, and 2017.
Some quick pointers:
-Four of the top five busiest routes in Fall 2021 terminate at UBC (99, R4, 49, 25). Can you guess what the fifth route is?
-As of the current schedule, routes R4 41st Avenue, 99 B-Line and 49 49th Avenue account for over half of almost 100 departures from the bus loop every weekday afternoon.
-The R4, 99, and 49 account for more than 5,500 students leaving the campus after classes on weekdays.
-The 49 49th Avenue, 25 King Edward, and 84 VCC-Clark Express all serve two major university campuses: BCIT, Langara, and Emily Carr/VCC Broadway Campus.

18:28 this is now an articulated route, bringing the total to 6 at UBC. 49, 99, 44/84, 25 and R4.

I work in the Kerrisdale neighbourhood along 41st Avenue, and the eastbound flow of traffic becomes absolutely gridlocked at peak hours, because the flow of traffic suddenly turns into a single lane from Mackenzie Street onwards. I don't know why the city only stopped upgrades to there before the launch of the RapidBus service, but it definitely explains why R4 is ranked below the 49 because it simply becomes unreliable once it reaches that certain portion of its route. I take the 25 to and from school everyday, and I absolutely hate taking it. The route is in dire need of upgrading to the articulated buses, because it's usually packed after leaving the bus exchange, or if you're heading towards campus, there's a really slim chance to squeeze on the bus after the King Edward Ave & Dunbar St stop. I've submitted way too many complaints to Translink about overcrowding and skipping people on this route.

@3:40 Great, so the 44 returns, but not the 480? Nice logic. 👏🏼👏🏼🙃 Also had this random thought that they should rename the 480 (if it were to return) to the 98 B-line (new version, from Richmond to UBC) lol

I feel like the 480 (and 258) will be suspended long enough that the last undergraduates who knew about it will be long gone or graduated

480 was so useful to me to get from Bridgeport to Marple from my fanning trips cause I just don't like using the train its cheaper to pay for the buses only

As of 2nd week in February all but 2 runs during peak hour have been articulated buses. Before then it was mostly 40ft Novas. This is perhaps due to double deckers entering service in late february/early March freeing artics from the 620; a reduction in 503 artic runs during weekdays could also be looked at. That said, actual service levels are still a bit lower compared to 2019. I remember the last 44 into downtown was at 7:50pm

Fifth busiest route is 14 I'm guessing? 33 and 84 are not as busy as 25, 44 doesn't run on weekends, 9 only runs select trips from UBC, 4 is hardly ever talked about, and 68 is... 68. 41 is a candidate, but then it doesn't run to UBC anymore. Also, nice catch with those blue-topped 99 B-Lines.

@@jmstransit oh my bad. If I had to guess, it’d be between 41, 410, R5, and 319.

Yes - 319 is ranked 5th. It has the same (more or less) frequency as the 49 during rush hour.

2:30 I hate that message when I see that exact bus at my school sorry bus full 745 Haney place or 745 cottonwood the driver never lets me on. I wish we got 30ft buses in maple ridge

The 25 should really be running artics after 3 till 7 or 7:30 because I go there sometimes after my school and there's always a big line for the 25 even tho it comes every 15 or something like that (note haven't watched full video so haven't seen if u said that or not)
@durmore
@durmore Жыл бұрын
yeah artics may not fit in all the stops but that could be said about the 100 running rapids in the summer and some days are all artics

I have no faith that 49 is the 2nd busiest route ... It only runs every six mins compared to THREE mins on R4, plus the fact that the 49 is every 15 mins on weekends compared to 10 or 12 on R4, plus the fact that some R4 are overcrowded on weekends

Agree to an extent - TransLink’s latest ridership numbers are as far back as Fall 2021 (which this video took numbers from). The 2022 numbers are still yet to come out - some agencies release ridership data every 3 months!

2:33 a prime example of why large transit agencies such as TransLink should adopt 30-foot buses and have all drivers paid the same wage. A 30-foot bus would have had enough seats for everyone plus room for about 10-15 standees!

Federal policy in Canada makes this impossible. Transport Canada is too strict.

Should have built pedestrian underpasses instead of having cross walk in the bus loop. With the amount of people using that transit exchange crossing in the loop delays buses as well as its not the safest thing.

I mean it's the busiest bus loop in western Canada and I don't think that's a behavior one would be 100% successful at fixing. If anything, I think the previous setup along wesbrook was fairly organized. Nobody was trying to cut across the road. I also think the centre barrier is doing a wonderful job at deterring people from crossing the west side of the loop instead of the curved fence path where the R4 is. I also never see anyone going to UBC for the sole purpose of changing buses compared to something like Phibbs Exchange or Newton Exchange. But that's just me.

woah! some intersections needn't be granted turn tight on red...travesty, that this many buses clog campus...I barely recognise West Mall (?), and from another recording the condition of that access boulevard through the nearby golf course looks appalling...wtf must the BOG've been up to..?

a transit advocacy group there had asked me to become secretary, but they had already balked at augmenting their burg by way of incursive rapid transit extensions, you see, so the prospect of zanily-intensive bus service soon becoming tiresome thereafter inspired my skedaddle...do, mind that homogeneously corporate condition that Vancouver takes to dressing itself 💡💡💡 :brrRrr:

ok! so the b-line replacement of the 99 peak-hours shuttle finally gets supplemented by an express itself; hilarious...I hated the advent of the b-line, whereas watching silly small-town titches SHAMELESSLY squabble mainly mornings for trespassing the 99 shuttle HAD BEEN entertaining...but thereafter, fuckingly, we were also lumped the advent of crappy bendy buses

BC Transit were SO! nasty...the shitty driving; two-handed finger count of hospitalisations that agency WITTINGLY commandeered; the crazily soiled bus windows...never EVER have I come close to complaining to a transit agency as much as to that LM's there...oof
