It was a respect thing, the organization set it up where Jeter and Pettitte would come out to get him. He had time to 'say goodbye' to his teammates. It wasnt about winning or losing it was about giving MO his moment, and it would not have been the same had it happened after the game.

The Yankees have always been Masters at honoring baseball players. No other team in sports does tributes like the Yankees do. From honoring Gehrig during his luckiest man in the world speech to Mo's final exit, we Yankee fans should feel proud of the way legends are handled. The only thing that would have made this final exit for mo even more tear jerking would have been bringing Posada out with Derek and Andy. That would have been the core four together on the mound. But, I loved this too

@lawrencebader939911 жыл бұрын
I believe you are mistaken. There were several players with the number 42 when Jackie Robinson's number was retire. They were all allowed to keep their number 42. Mariano Rivera, because of his very long career (since 1995) was THE LAST of these players who still wore 42 to finally retire. So, with this last appearance, the very last player still wearing number 42 has retired, and so has the number 42 from every baseball player.

Its absolutely disgusting how Greedy these baseball players or official league players have become over the years it makes me sick how millions aint enough they need more more more
@iamhungey123453 жыл бұрын
@@JoeLambert94782 Greed is also a factor on how the team gets build, remember when it comes to free agency it goes both ways as teams like the Yankees and the Red Sox were known to benefit from this and can be on the other end as well. Not to mention part of the blame for Cano leaving goes to the ownership as well as they could have extended his contract when they had the chance before Cano decides he wants more, whose fault was that? Rather than stop being a fan of the team, you might as well stop following the sport altogether as greed goes both ways.

There was no special rule for Mo. It was grandfathered. all players wearing it at the time were allowed to continue to wear it for the rest of their careers. 13 players had it at the time the # was retired. However, due to the fact this was only his 3rd year in the league (1997) and the longevity of Mariano's career, everyone else has long since been retired. Mo Vaughn was probably the biggest name at the time wearing #42 when it was retired by baseball in 97 wore it until he retired in 2002

Not entirely true. When MLB retired #42 in 1997, a grandfather clause was included which allowed any player who was wearing it at the time to continue to wear it until they retired or decided to change numbers. At the time there were a few players who were wearing the number including Mo Vaughn, Jose Lima & Kirk Rueter.
@lethrneck411 жыл бұрын
people really are uneducated or blinded by yankee hate, when jackies number was retired, every current player who was wearing 42 was allowed to continue to wear it, until they left baseball. i dont know how many did but there were a bunch who were still wearing 42 after it was retired, no special rule was written for mariano to wear it, he just happened to pitch forever so he was the only 42 left, and besides, statistically mariano was a greater player than jackie..cultural impact aside

you see this a lot in college basketball. Take the guy out before the end of the game to give the fans one final chance to salute him with a standing ovation. If you let the inning finish, it starts the change over process, which is timed and causes the moment to get more lost in the shuffle.

@seamus19567 жыл бұрын
Billy Emmerling Actually, you're incorrect. When the number was retired in honor of Hackie Robinson in 1997, all current players were grandfathered in. At the time, 13 players had the number, but 6 chose to take a new number or retired, leaving 7 still in play. They are, in order of retirement: Butch Huskey (Mariners, 1999) Kenny Webster (Orioles, 1999) Michael Jackson (Indians 1997-1999; Twins, 2002) Scott Karl (Brewers, 1997-1999) Jose Lima (Astros 1997-2001; Tigers 2002-2003) Mo Vaughn (Red Sox,1998; Angels, 1999-2000; Mets, 2002-2003) Mariano Rivera (Yankees, 1997-2013) I personally think Jackie Robinson would've been happy and proud to have someone the quality of Mariano Rivera, both inside and outside the game, wear his number.
