Ufotable is good with their special effects but the fight scene are kinda shorter. So 2d animation fight scenes and flow, KyoAni is still superior.

When Kyoto Animation tries their hand with fighting scenes It's already looking better than most shounen. It's not just the animation too, the cinematography is top tier as well.

See? This is what most studios nowadays lack, the consistency(they keep this kind of quality all through out the series) and the flow in their animation, especially the fight scenes. Even with dialogues, the fighting is still ongoing and there's few pauses unlike in other animes, especially shonen, where the battle will be intense then comes a flashback or inner monologue that slows everything down, including the hype and intensity of the scene.

This animation is slowly aging beautifully, idk if yall notice it but even tho 2023 is not long after 2016, you can already tell there are no anime coming out in this style anymore, the same way the 90s anime have their own stablished style due to technical limitations and standards of the era, i am seeing the same with the 2010s slowly happening, nowadays most anime look absolutely gorgeous even the small 12 ep slice of life ones are getting a level of quality that was unseen in most 2016, anime did improve, but as always, changed its style enough that now we can definetely identify when an anime is from that era. Kyoukai no kanata does hold up way more than some other anime from the mid 2010s
