i think Mariah has earned her right to lip-synch. she worked her *ass* off seemingly tirelessly for over a decade. actually, i wish she had lip-synched in the 90s. it may've preserved her voice.

I don’t think lip synching earlier in hr career would have better preserved her voice. Mariah started lip synching a lot during Butterfly and Rainbow, and her voice was still in relatively poor condition in those eras.

She actually lowered the key for Anytime You Need A Friend live performances by a semitone. So 2:16 , 2:18 , and 2:21 are all F#5s. She actually intended to hit the same F#5 for 2:25 , but it came out flat, so that could be counted as an F5.

Raspy F#5 -> Perfect F#5 -> Flat/Raspy F#5 -> F5. There is no G5 here. Mariah would have had to have sang a semitone sharp to hit a G5 which would be discordant since it's not sang in the original key where she belts G5s on the studio recording. Amazing performance regardless, just tired of seeing these notes mislabelled

This version was fixed to make it be with a better quality, but some frequencies were deleted. If you search “Anytime You Need A Friend Deleted Version” you will see she did a flat G5. This “deleted version” is the original one without the fixing.

Whitney was great singer, i will say that. She was a gospel influenced singer, who had always the same sound, while Mariah can sound soft, light, silky, smokey, use her whisper tone, belting with intentional vocal breaks with more emotion and go in that high registers. Whitney comes close, but she never had just half difficult songs. There hundred of singers, especially asian singers like Charice, who sound the same. Mariah is the Queen, thats the way it is.
