Calm down lol. When MJ debuted the moonwalk, Thriller was already becoming a cultural phenomenon, he had been in the business for more than 10 years by then even though he was under 25 yrs old, released Off The Wall a few years prior which was the biggest breakout album of the time and broke several records, gave leeway/steam for his album Thriller to break racial barriers in the music industry, and his performance alone became The Standard for many performers even to this very day. This performance for Mariah was more like when Michael/Jackson 5 was "introduced" to America on Ed Suvillan. I love Queen Mariah, but what you wrote wasn't a valid comparision at all.

Amen...I mean constructive criticism is good, but people these days they don't have manners, they lose it as soon as they are online, think they can just say whatever, but let me see those same ppl say it in a persons face, and I'm talking about when they get cruel....these ppl are classless, and obviously can't construct a sentence of dislike for something with tact.

They're both legends and did things differently. Neither is 'better'. If you hear Whitney singing Ain't No Way, she had to drop the key a few semitones to even attempt covering the song. Compare her version to Aretha's and Patti's and she comes off inferior. But does that mean they were 'better' than her? No way. All legends, just with different strengths and weaknesses.
@chrism35379 жыл бұрын
this performance is one of her bests, man i wish she would have sang the national anthem in the emotions or daydream era. this performance is legendary among the lambs but it was at the beginning of her career and very little know about this, imagine her singing the anthem with prime vocals in her popularity prime as well. i think i get why she stood away from the anthem though despite being queen of the 90s. she was already compared so much and pinned up against whitney all the time. and after whitney's iconic super bowl 91 performance of the anthem, mariah would've only been compared to that! honestly, mariah was always really good at staying in her own lane and making her own shit! she was able to reach acclaim and become legendary without stepping on other diva's shit. whitney made the anthem hers, so i get why mariah avoided it like the plague.

Clearly, the audience didn't know what was coming for them. Here comes a light-skinned shy girl, with a black woman's powerful voice. Her voice here seemed to me like a blank canvas, like the basic blue print of her style of singing, which she, as the years went by, developed by adding more color to it,?melisma. Sometimes I'd play all her songs from the early 1990s to present, and its evident there the changes her voice underwent, from the whispery humming and intentional vocal breaks, the buttery head voice and her resonant chest voice, to the powerful growls and even the crystal clear whistle register which became her trademark. It's a joy watching these videos.

When I sometimes feel low or discouraged, I get on KZbin and watch this Mariah performance. I may not have her talent or skill, and that’s fine. It’s not even about that. It’s about a young girl, with a lot of nerve, believing in her abilities, at the very beginning of her career with hardly anything at all, just a lot of hope and belief in herself, and absolutely wow-ing a stadium full of people - and probably herself at the same time. I watch it to feel as hopeful and inspired as she probably felt that night many years ago. And finally realizing, that with determination, some nerve, and perseverance, maybe a dream can come true!
