this program is the ultimate in beauty and grace... Michelle has given the sport so many beautiful programs... it was never just about the jumps with her, it was about how beautiful she could make the experience for the audience... skating has never had anyone who could make you cry because the skating was just so incredibly lovely... Michelle is a once in a lifetime skater, and it will be a long time before we have someone like her again... she may not have won the gold, but the silver she got was worth a million times more than that... it gave us the joy of enjoying her for many more years... long after others had taken the money and run, we still had the beauty of Michelle- and that is worth more than a thousand gold medals...

@@lindaclark9925 just to not confuse things, the scoring system was changed in 2004, after that incident of the Salt Lake City Olympics in 2002, where Salé/Pelletier had that kids tantrum and achieved a fake gold shared medal. This all happened after Nagano 1998, where Tara Lipinski won over Michelle Kwan. The 6.0 system was even worst than the one we have now, it was more easy to place skaters as they decide, and the artistic was rarely rewarded properly. You can perfectly see it in this concrete case, while I still think they placed correctly, as Tara jumps content was much bigger, it is unfair that they scored Michelle only with 5.9 in the artistic score and then gave Tara 5.8 and 5.9. That is infamous and didn't reflect the big gap in they artistic skills and choreo.

it's one of the most beautiful and creatives programs we have seen at the olympics, same as her short program. I disagree with Tara’s win here. She tried more difficult jump combos for sure, but in the old judging system, the artistic mark that should have balanced both programs was used as a cop-out. There’s no way Tara’s artistic marks should have rivaled Michelle’s. You can give technical kudos to Tara here, but artistic should have been Michelle’s, in which case, the deciding factor should have been the results of the short program. That all being said, 20+ years later, Michelle showed that she had determination and longevity to push through and cement herself as an icon in the sport. Tara was a one-hit wonder by comparison. The way Michelle handled herself in the face of defeat beyond her control really made her one of the world’s most recognizable faces and role models of figure skating. One could argue that her career wouldn’t have lasted the test of time had she won here, so though unfair, I think it was a blessing in disguise.

But then I had rewatched Tara's program years later and I felt Tara's program was technically much harder than Michelle's so perhaps she deserved to win. MezzoSeren For years I was disappointed Michelle didn't win gold. I used to think she was robbed, but now I believe Tara beat her. Tara's jumps were sketchy, but I think the judges rewarded her for attempting the 3/3 combos. Todays judging may have caught the Under rotated jumps and flutz, but this was 20 years ago. It still breaks my heart that Michelle Kwan doesn't have an Olympic gold medal, because I think she's the greatest of all time and my all-time favorite figure skater.
@largeman6 жыл бұрын
Why do you say Michelle did 6 triples? She did 7.
@L1623VP6 жыл бұрын
Chip: I agree. Tara was clearly the deserved winner. There wasn't enough distance between Kwan and Lipinski artistically that Kwan could afford to pull back technically and yet, that's exactly what she did, expecting her reputation and art to pull her through, which didn't work. What's interesting is that Kim Yuna went into the 2014 Olympics with only 6 triples, as well. I remember thinking she was crazy to do that. Although a superior skater to Sotnikova, I feel like Kim put all her eggs in the artistic basket, too. I always say Kim lost the gold by one jump and Michelle lost by one rotation. If Michelle had done a triple-triple instead of a triple-double, I think the judges would have given her the nod, even though I still feel Tara was better overall. Funny too, how this same scenario played out in the 2018 games. I predicted a Lipinski type upset because there wasn't enough distance between Medvedeva and Zagitova artistically that Medvedeva could afford to pull back technically, and she did. The rest is history.

fixing and overscoring and political judging can and most probably will occur under any scoring system in which the sport is "judged". Especially if there is an artistic component. Like in hockey you can see if the ball/puck went in the goal and swimming a stopwatch tells you who hit the boards first. But it's the judge's discretion to allow/disallow and grade elements- be they out of 6 or -3/+3 and even more leeway is given when the sport adds components scores. It happened here, it happened in Salt Lake City, it happened in Sochi and its happened in lot of more minor competitions- be they under the old or new system. It's very political and the nature of the sport allows for it.

@@TT-ee4qp Wrong! In this performance Tara didn't just jump and run. Her artistry was improved and she was in sync with the music. Her presentation matched Kwan in THIS competition and that is PART of the reason why she won!

@@TT-ee4qp In this competition, Tara's artistic quality was superior. There is no point in talking about if she didn't have a certain aspect because she had it all and enough to win that night! So take your opinions and shove it!!😤😫😡

the triple flip was the downfall for her in both Olympics. her triple flip here she landed shaky. had she landed perfectly she might have won the gold here. had she landed the triple flip perfectly in 2002 Olympics, she would have won the gold for sure.

a beautiful skate from michelle. but the thing that i admire so much about tara's skate…she had a long wait…her greatest rival skated way before her…and after nationals michelle got perfect sixes and tara had that trouble in the short program. so for tara to come out…skate with so much speed…that triple loop triple loop combination…she was clearly the winner. and this whole flutzing thing is just bullshit. skaters have been doing that for years. tara, in my book, deserved the gold medal.

Lyra Angelica lacks the drama an Olympic program should have. Michelle did not need to extend herself artistically. Had she skated something more difficult like Taj Mahal she would have blown Tara out of the water in the LP&won the gold.

This was a beautiful program but Michelle thought the gold was hers before she even got to Nagano. Her marks were inflated at the US Nationals and she expected the same here. She was inflated in the short program, Tara won that too. Her dad told her that all she had to do was stay standing and the gold was hers. She didn't think that she had to improve technically. She skated an easier program and did so cautiously. She won a Silver medal and didn't earn anything more than that on that night. Sorry folks, that is the truth. An Olympic silver medal is something to be very proud of but when people keep telling you, the gold, im sure it was difficult to digest.

It was very much the same with Patrick Chan in the 2014 Olympics. He was so outrageously over-scored throughout his skating career, that he felt all he needed to do was show up at competitions to earn the gold. Sadly, he was right most of the time. The worst example was the 2013 World Championships before the 2014 Olympics, where Chan fell three times in the long program and STILL won in a judging decision that's highly controversial, even today. The problem is that Chan believed his own press and all the people around him who said "yes" to everything, about how "fabulous" he was and that his artistry was more than enough. So, he never pushed himself to be any better technically because he'd become so used to winning with highly flawed programs for years. He didn't have to work any harder, so he didn't. I'd never seen him skate two clean programs back-to-back. Of course, his artistry wasn't enough at the Sochi Games when his technique fell apart so disastrously that even the judges couldn't hold him up with inflated marks anymore. Even so, he ended up with a silver medal that should have been a bronze. When judges consistently over-score skaters, they don't do them any favors because it gives them a false sense of security that future victories are assured based solely on their reputations, and that there is no real need to improve their skills, even while there are younger and more athletic skaters coming up behind them...as was the case with Chan. Now, he can't even begin to compete technically against skaters like Yuzuru Hanyu, Shoma Uno and Nathan Chen, and has been quickly left behind.

Well definitely I agree Chan had that bad attitude that he could show up and win and didn't learn to compete strongly. But Chan did have better skating skills than everyone, I think most in the skating world would agree but he is now challenging himself on jumps too but it might be too late. But Dennis Tan should have won 2013 worlds, that was so screwed up. And Patrick in that interview after didn't even say I could have done better, his attitude was too arrogant and it kept him down really. Yuzuru challenged himself, quad loop, Patrick has a quad salchow but Patrick jus tcant compete. Best skater in artistry and skill but he is not a good competitor. needs sports psychologist

saw tara lipinski's short program yesterday and what struck me was tara's jumps are small: she barely gets off the ground and the distance she covers is short. watching michelle now her jumps are not very impressive either. her jumps are not very good either. if michelle had done one more triple jump she would have won.

Michelle had the artistic edge over Tara. Tara was a jumping bean and didn't have the maturity Michelle had. Michelle should've won the gold in my opinion.

I will always wonder what was going through her mind in kiss n cry. Why was she emotional. Was it elation that she skated so well... or was it that she knew she skated cautiously/had a slight check on that 3flip and thought she'd be penalized for that? I notice Frank was trying to console her... so maybe the later? But she looked so happy after that 2nd Lutz. I'm so confused. lol

I think more that the ISU felt Tara was good for selling the sport. It was repeated with Lipnitskaya in Sochi- the cute kid on debut taking on the pros and winning both the competitions and people's hearts with her cuteness. Plus little kids doing harder ticks, even if done badly, makes people go awww. Only thing was Julia didn't deliver the goods. The scoring is always political and based on who the ISU thinks ells the sport

Yeah, that junior beauty pageant stuff has ruined the sport. These gawky girls with bad technique and posture getting medals because they are so young. Not Tara's doing but this result set the precedent for the mess we have today. Will never happen but Ralph Aratunian is right - senior ladies should begin at 18.
