No doubt she’s talented and the loop combinations are stellar, but both those lutz jumps takeoffs were badly cheated. The whole point of lutz is that the outside edge stays deep until takeoff, and here she clearly switches to inside edge. That actually reduces her technical difficulty.

Before ijs I believe they did not care about lutz edge that much. I think ISU started to penalize it seriously during Mao years in senior. Michelle had flutz as well but she did 1 Lz so the damage was not as huge as Tara. Tbh I always on Michelle side that she should have won Nagano. I think her maturity and overall better SS and execution could have closed the 1 triple less in FS.

I'm not Tara fan but I give credit where credit is due. She was a decade ahead of her time and ahead of competition, even Kwan. At 15 years old, she has done difficult combinations and most of the time with great results.. 3Lo-3Lo, 2Ax-3Toe, 3Toe-L-3Sal, 3Sal-3Lo. Even the women today have problems doing those combinations and some can't do all the triple jumps. She dserved to win the Gold here.. I don't understand how anyone could have questioned that.

people question it because she didn't execute the elements you listed properly and overall her skating technique was poor. And she didn't have artistic maturity in comparison with the other skaters. It's the age old debate- do you want a simpler program done really well or a harder program done averagely.

Tara had he harder program, both in the short and long hands down. No question about that and she executed both very well and skated with freedom, joy and without fear. Michelle's short was beautiful but also she opted for an easier combination and a toe loop instead of a flip. Her long program was far less difficult than Tara's and she skated with caution and less speed. Neither Michelle or Tara were terribly balletic or good spinners. Tara won 6-3 . There was no question who won this Olympic competition. Michelle won a silver that night and didn't deserve the gold. There was no controversy here at all.

People cannot accept that Michelle Kwan took the easy road at these Olympics. Her programs were technically at the same level of skaters at both the Albertville and Lillehammer Olympics. Her marks were inflated at the US Nationals, like they almost always are at every National competition. Americans have come to expect the same marks internationally but rarely are they deserved. The judges could have given Michelle higher technical marks but they gave her what was fair. Artistically she didn't have much speed and she skated with great caution, almost falling on a jump. Tara won hands down. 6-3 not 5-4. Clear majority decision.

Wow, regardless of how everybody said Michelle Kwan was going to win gold, Tara still went for the gold with all her heart and fearlessness. That is awesome and purity of youthful energy.

For sure, that takes guts! Just watching the two performances Michelle was a bit more artistically inclined with her program, but Tara was more athletic and completed hers at a faster pace which is why I believe she won the gold. In the judges eyes, athletics tops artistry. That being said, nothing can be taken away from both these fantastic ladies! They are both LEGENDS!

So true. Tara herself said she freaked out before having to do the long and literally told her parents she wouldn't do it and wanted to go home. People who criticize her tend to forget how young she was. She went to her first Nationals and Worlds at 13 years old, then won both the next year at 14 years old. Her family was split up due to her dad working in Texas and her mom with her training in Detroit,MI. There were definite sacrifices she and her family had to make and she made it worth it.

This was an inspired skate. It was ironically like a telling of a girl's journey to her dream coming true and that's exactly what happened. It was fun, light and energetic. You feel like you're in the program with her, not just watching. She's sharing the journey. And then technically she was ahead of the pack, too. It really was like a fairytale.

Living in Houston, I knew Tara and her family lived very close to Houston. When I took my kids to the Galleria, I noticed there was only one skater skating on the rink. The closer I got, the more I told myself, "No. This cannot be," however the closer and closer I got to the rink, I realized, "Damn! That is Tara." She was there practicing, eventhough she had already captured Olympic Gold, and her father was there, closely guarding her. Her free skating was something awesome to see.

Kwan had the artistry but Tara had the technical prowess and just enough artistry to justify the gold medal here. Her spins were incredible, fast and difficult compared to what Kwan did.

Right. I said for years that there wasn't enough distance between Michelle and Tara artistically that Michelle could afford to pull back technically and yet, that's exactly what she did, expecting her art and reputation to pull her through, and it didn't work. I love Michelle and always felt Tara deserved to win. No question. Still, I always say Michelle lost the '98 gold by one revolution. If she'd only done a triple-triple combo instead of a triple-double, I think the judges would have given her the nod, but Michelle skated safe, while Tara skated with joy and abandon. That came through in their performances. Funny that it was basically the exact same scenario that played out between Zagitova and Medvedeva at the '18 games. There wasn't enough distance between those ladies artistically that Medvedeva could hold back technically and yet, she did.

pomare kaire No one could match up with Tara this night ! Kwan chose the easiest way with a simple steps sequence, no difficult jump’s combination. The music was beautiful but too slow. A reputation does not lead to the gold medal. Tara had the energy of a will-o'-the-wisp. an incredible speed of rotation, steps executed in both directions, combinations of triple at the end end of the program not to mention the triple triple loop buckle still very little successful nowadays. a technical daring, an artistic joy that led logically to obtaining the gold medal. the fanatics of Michelle kwan have to move on to another subject. it's been 20 years since tara brought the olympic gold medal back to her homeland and it will definitely stay in the history of usa sport whether you like it or not!

Venuz Modeling back then people called out Nicole and Tara’s very obvious flutz but Michelle’s is also a flutz by today’s standards. So yah we saw many triple flips among them

There were moments when the music was not felt or the choreography wasn’t designed to accentuate this powerful composition. I think we were all captivated by her lightness and effortless athleticism. Also we are watching this from a cameraman perspective seeing every detail . As a Judge you are trying to keep up with every detail as these skills are being achieved or failed. It’s hard. Perhaps judging should be based on the replay and not the live performance - then I’d chance to guess the true winner or the exact winner could emerge. I’m happy that Tara won - I feel like of all Olympic Champions there have been - she’s at the top - I loved Kwans program, at that time the artistry and musicality was fresh - but her performance was flat. I think that the order she skated that night played a huge part in that - so. It still was a beautiful evening and I’m happy that I was alive to see it. There it is.

Even I, as an avid Michelle fan have to admit that Lipinski rightfully took the gold that night. She was way ahead of her time technically by pulling off a triple-triple combination. And for a 15-year-old, her artistry was amazing; she felt every note of music.

Tara wasn't ahead of her time with 3+3. Midori Ito and Kristi Yamaguchi. Even Tonya Harding landed a 3 Axel and 2 loop combo ° world record in short and 1st 3A ending with a combo. I give blame on Kwans coach. She should have been pushed to do some 3+3 combo. She never mastered those or didn't implement in programs and skated 'technically' safe.

It wasn't just 1 skate. Even if it was she actually blew Kwan away. Kwan got higher marks because she was Kwan. She thought she do the easiest skate should could and she still win because she was Kwan. It's why she never won a Gold at the Olympics. Safe doesn't win golds. Tara said this is my gold and she went and took it.

Go back and rewatch both Kwan's program and this one...Tara's jumps are more difficult, and her spins are much faster. I suppose Kwan had more "artistry" but Tara was perfectly fine in her artistry for such a young girl. In any case, Tara's edge in technical merit is MUCH higher than whatever edge Kwan had in artistic, as the scores point out.

Same here. I said for years that there wasn't enough distance between Michelle and Tara artistically that Michelle could afford to hold back technically and yet, that's what she did. She expected her art and reputation to pull her through, and it didn't work. I like both skaters, but Tara won this competition easily. Interestingly, the exact same scenario played out between Zagitova and Medvedeva at the '18 games, which I predicted.

Yes, I agree with you guys! No guts, no glory. And at the Olympic games...you've got to throw down the gaunlet. There has to be a high risk. Tara risked the hard combos and she personally had this presence on the ice that was unlike Kwan's. She was skating in the moment and to the program. Not to mention it's kind of ironic that not only was Tara's music was more upbeat than Kwan's but her dress was bluer as well. There was just more going for Tara that night, and she won it fair and square.

@@EvaSofie Zagitova won perfectly by the book. Medvedeva could have added more jumps to the back end of her program, but she didn't. She'd lost to Zagitova at the GPF before the Olympics and yet, made no strategic changes to her program. She expected her reputation and two world championships to do the heavy lifting for her, just like Michelle Kwan, and the gamble didn't pay off. Zagitova did everything she needed to do within the rules to win, and she did. It's funny how she was doing the same program all season long and winning with it, and no one bitched about it until Medvedeva lost the Olympics. Just sour grapes. We also have to remember that aside from the backloading, Zagitova had some more difficult elements, like the triple lutz, triple loop that Medvedva was not doing.

No one complained about Zagitova’s program because she never beat Medevedeva until Europeans, but Medvedeva wasn’t at her best then because of her injury. Her 2nd loop looked cheated but her 2nd Lutz was almost 1/2 turn cheated. I never noticed that back then because jumps weren't really judged like that. Tara only did 1 "Lutz" since you can't count that 2nd one. But in 98 it was counted of course.

No one could match up with Tara this night ! Kwan chose the easiest way with a simple steps sequence, no difficult jump’s combination. The music was beautiful but too slow. A reputation does not lead to the gold medal. Tara had the energy of a will-o'-the-wisp. an incredible speed of rotation, steps executed in both directions (rocker, counter turn...) combinations of triple at the end end of the program not to mention the triple triple loop still very little successful nowadays. a technical daring, an artistic joy that led logically to obtaining the gold medal. the fanatics of Michelle kwan have to move on to another subject. it's been 20 years since tara brought the olympic gold medal back to her homeland and it will definitely stay in the history of usa sport whether you like it or not!

In 1998 when I watched Tara's Olympics FS program, honestly I thought it was technically ultimate for lady's. It had never crossed my mind that quads would become commonplace in women's skating. It's shocking to me to learn that a couple decades later, Tara's Olympics gold number is turning subpar in today's women's free skating to win gold. What has changed? Technologies? I am puzzled.

women don't do proper quads. They're all pre rotated severely. Technique is lost in modern ladies skating.

I think we need to give credit where it’s due. Tara deserved to win at Nagano without the shadow of a doubt. Michelle was a great skater, but the Olympic gold always eluded her because she skated safe. Yes, neither Tara nor Sarah Hughes nor Irina Slutskaya had the complexity of her artistry and pirouettes, but back at the time you couldn’t even dream of winning gold without cleanly landed jumps, and whoever felt brave enough to do a 3-3 won the gold.

Tara vs Michelle was like a deja vu of Oksana vs Nancy. Tara and Oksana were the younger ones who had more energetic programs, they put out every ounce of what they're capable of, and both looked like they were genuinely having fun out there. Michelle and Nancy on the other hand, had slower, more "mature" programs, and both were more conservative, hence why they didn't win (although Michelle was much more interesting to watch than Nancy). As bad as I feel for Michelle to have never won an Olympic title despite multiple wins at the World Championships, giving Tara the win was the right call
