Perhaps the greatest and most beautiful song ever written about a broken heart and the unplugged version he sang perhaps the greatest live version of any song ever sung. Absolutely raw emotion and so so beautiful. This song always hits home and will always have a special place in my heart despite how incredibly sad it is but that's life and he let it all out and I just imagine so many people he reached from this song and helped let out all the pain as well.

@eddievedder1919 I only recently discovered PJ, being 61 years. Five years ago, March 9, 2018, I was involved in a hit-and-run car accident that left me disabled, physically and emotionally. PTSD, Clinical Depression and Anxiety, Chronic head, neck and back pain. Wife and daughter left me. Son stayed, but was in college and I was Alone for months at a time. Bought a puppy that got me out of my head and bed. Suffered. Then, was diagnosed with Amyloidosis of the heart, a form of blood cancer, despite being healthy my whole Life, no known heart disease in family, but they think it’s genetic. Thirty two chemotherapy and a stem cell transplant. Lost all my hair. (Took seven months to grow back). Did not get one penny from the hit-and-run trial as my Ex character assassinated me. Met a gal, also divorced, on EHarmony. We are getting married in a year, June 8, ‘24, and I am in remission! ALIVE has such meaning for me! I am still Alive and things are looking up! Your music has Really Helped me and I cannot wait for my first PJ concert 9-2-23, St Paul, MN. Taking my fiancée. Thank you so much!!! Steve J.

There’s not many songs that are sang on pure emotion. Listen to Eddie at 4.34 man, jeez you feel it. I played this song on loop when going through divorce. Felt like Eddie was singing for me and all the words I wanted to say. Grunge saved me in that part of my life.

i feel this is the only live version of black that almost captures the true emotion of the studio recording. most of the other live versions i've seen can't even come close to replicating the power of the original.

This particular performance, especially at 4:32 through the end, destroys me every time. So powerful and beautiful. I've been listening for Pearl Jam since '91 and there's just nothing like it. if you look at Eddie Vetter at [ 5:09 - 5:15 ] - he is NO longer on the stage - he has no idea who all the people are in front of him or why they are clapping - he has wholly transmuted himself and GONE back to that place from where this song emerged - just LOOK at him - he literally transmuted himself off the stage at 4:21 - he is so GONE - that is what makes this song so stunning and it must be incredibly difficult and painful for him to sing this song and release all of that internal pain each time he sings it - has to be one of the greatest singing performances in rock-n-roll history tbh

Sheets of empty canvas, untouched sheets of clay Were laid spread out before me as her body once did. All five horizons revolved around her soul as the earth to the sun Now the air I tasted and breathed has taken a turn Ooh, and all I taught her was everything Ooh, I know she gave me all that she wore And now my bitter hands chafe beneath the clouds of what was everything. Oh, the pictures have all been washed in black, tattooed everything... I take a walk outside, I'm surrounded by some kids at play I can feel their laughter, so why do I sear? Oh, and twisted thoughts that spin round my head, I'm spinning, oh, I'm spinning, how quick the sun can drop away And now my bitter hands cradle broken glass of what was everything All the pictures have all been washed in black, tattooed everything... All the love gone bad turned my world to black Tattooed all I see, all that I am, all I'll be... yeah... Uh huh... uh huh... ooh... I know someday you'll have a beautiful life, I know you'll be a star in somebody else's sky, But why, why, why can't it be, can't it be mine? Aah... uuh.. Too doo doo too, too doo doo

This song makes me remember all the girls I met in my youth, girls that got away during a turbulent time in my life where I was finding myself and was emotionally unstable. It makes me feel the dread and regret of how I missed so many opportunities to have potentially beautiful relationships. All those pictures in the depths of my mind have all been washed in black... tattooed everything. Painful and bittersweet. Eddie nails the emotions perfectly with his vivid lyrics and expressive singing style.
