English pubs are put there exactly for the people who want to hang with that family from Newcastle for their whole holiday, and preferrably never have to interact with anyone who isn't English. I love Frank Skinner, but learning to speak a foreign language is what everybody else has to do when they go to England, because NOBODY in England speaks another language. It's as if all other countries have evolved this normal ability to speak another language, but somehow, through all of the inbreeding on the damp and miserable island of Albion, the british have devolved into not being able to even read phonetically a foreign word and pronounce it. You present them with something like "Au revoir" and chances are something comes out like "How Reef Vole". They're not even reading the word and trying to pronounce it, they just start adding in consonants and vowels that aren't there for no reason whatsoever, other than signalling to everyone "Hey, I'm not even going to bother to try, I'm just going to deliberately pronounce Danke Schön like Dan Shaney just so you know that I think your language is beneath me, I am too good to have to read all the letters in the word and pay any kind of attention to how people in your country pronounce those, I'm just going to force YOU to speak MY language because you're just a foreigner with a stupid language." No, british people, you've had your 3 centuries of going round the world shooting at everyone not drinking the right amount of tea with the right amount of stiff upperlip, and nobody liked you while you were doing that. Now you're just another small country in a large world, and if you want to enjoy beautiful places like France or Germany or Spain, that are more pretty than Britain, you're going to have to make a tiny little effort to behave like a normal person and adapt to the places you're visiting. Brexit means Brexit. Go and force people in Wales to speak your language, we know how to speak your language, now go and do your best to know how to speak ours. It's not difficult.

WalterLiddy Not in general but there are some places that do this. I refuse to eat in them. I don't want to feel I'm in a school canteen. I expect some privacy when I dine out - it's part of what you pay for.

Whose nephew is he?" -- it's his father (who was an agent before he retired); he knew everyone in the 70s and onward and made lots of deals over alcohol-soaked lunches and is great friends with some famous actor (who was the son in a british show about a father and son doctor pair going into medical practice together; he's been in a lot of programs, tends to get upper-class and/or smarmy roles, but I am completely blanking on his name and any other shows).
