Hi Michelle, I just rewatched her whole program and I agree, her first 2 jumps were dodgy, but very little matter, she landed them. She stuck the rest. But I am still not all that interested in (her) jumps as much as the overall perf. She was always clever and interpretative, and should forever be credited with opening up the sport with new moves. Just look at her one-arm hold on the ice during a spin, I don't even know what that's called. But it's so great, I want more of that! And then she just glides down into the splits on ice! What you seem to be defending is just the grossest (as in massive) *conservatism* in judging. The kind that is determined to stay blind to innovation, as if that were a good thing. Ice skating as a sport started as mainly for the well to do, and as usual, only for men at first. The more we can get rid of such a typically ugly 19th C. past, the better. One of my heroes was American champ Dick Button, who was a jumping innovator, but John Curry's innovations towards overtly balletic skating never took. Maybe I am ok with that, other than hoping one day a new balletic skating sport can coexist. Now looking at such large stylistic approaches, there was nothing to mark Suriya down for within the existing framework except squirming conservatism wanting "fluidity". You can't legit argue that she failed to perform "jazzhands"(or "Spirit Fingers") so she doesn't fit the sport! That would be sport bigotry and every kind of ugly -ism that is essentially bullying. I'm sure dear Suriya felt utterly bullied her whole career. Not an attitude to uphold, defend, nor to be proud of. theundefeated.com/features/former-olympian-surya-bonaly-says-dont-call-her-a-rebel-call-her-fearless/

The problem from my non expert eyes seems to be that she is not as flexible and as refined as gold medal skaters. IE when she does a camel spin her arms are not tight, when she does Biellmann spin she struggles to extend, and that i-spin she tried to do took her like 5 seconds to get extended .. this is why she doesnt score well
@m.addams39217 жыл бұрын
husher5142 Actually, in this program I can understand she not scoring that well, because it was kinda sloppy. Even the backflip at the end she end up having to touch the ice and the backflip is her trademark. But if you see her previous presentations, when she was younger (in this video she was almost 30 years old, if I well remember, what is kinda old for a figure skater) you can see how amazing she was, specially she being such a unique figure skater.

It’s crazy how the judges criticized her for being “too athletic.” Fast-forward to 2022, the judges CELEBRATE the ATHLETIC SKATERS and penalize the ones who aren’t. Surya Bonaly was a TRENDSETTER! (and so was Madori Ito--she was also criticized for being "too athletic.”) ❤️❤️
@emi2837 ай бұрын
I don't know what olympics you were watching, but they still gave better scores to the slim skaters, mostly because they move better so their skating is more artistic and entertaining, times have changed but that part hasn't, and I can't really blame the judges for that, usually those athletic skaters don't put much effort on the artistry and focus on the technique and jumps, of course that's not gonna give them the same score as the others cause they're lacking at an important area of skating, and if they make mistakes then they can't compensate with artistry

@@emi283 I'm not even going to read all of this because from the outset, you've proven that you don't know what you're talking about. If you've watched any skating competition within the last 15 to 20 years, the most athletic skaters, the ones landing quads and triples, are the ones who score the best. It's not just about the quads and triples are the ones winning, which speaks to the level of a skater's athleticism. In years past, it was all about artistry, but that's not the case anymore.

mylist0song ummmmmmmm ...... hmmmm yea I wouldn’t say that Tonya and Surya were the same. Lol i would say that I believe that they both weren’t favored by the judges. I think they were both athletic in their skating but where they both differ is one didn’t let the drama or scandal break her , where as one unfortunately did. And it caused for her to not make the best decisions. I don’t know how Suryas upbringing was but from what I’ve learned about tonya watching videos and reading is that she had a very sad and rough one which I believe contributed to her downfall. But who knows ? Maybe we wouldn’t of still be talking about Tonya if Nancy never gotten hit on the knees that night 🤷🏽♂️. I get a very wise, confident and mature vibe from Surya compared to Tonya back then if I compare them both. Where Tonya I just get a very spastic all over the place feeling. To this day Surya Bonaly is me & my mom’s favorite ice skater ever! ❤️🙌 She’s beautiful, strong, creative and just exciting to watch. Most skaters just don’t keep my attention the way she does - an absolute Queen 👑💖🥰

artistically she is totally on fire.................fire on ice .......a definitely new meaning of figure skating...............the judges have to figure it out!

I have watched this program over and over, Surya Bonaly is so incredibly stunning. Her dedication, her excellence, her drive to go beyond.. just amazing. Such an expressive and beautiful performance that’s unlike anything another figure skater could do. She’s in a league of her own. Now that she’s a coach, I hope she can inspire her students to express themselves freely on ice like she does. But even then, Surya Bonaly is truly unique, an empress on ice. Amazing. ❤️

Phenomenal Skater! The best I’ve seen! Even her make up and outfits were beautiful! Hope she reads these amazing comments about her. She should have been more famous than all the others and won the top awards.

She is a 3x World Silver Medalist (3 Times!!!) when a high percentage of those women didn't make it anywhere near the podium ever in their entire career.

For the commenters saying she should have won golds. Her programme is choppy and doesnt have a flowing transition compared to her competitors. I love that she became a huge sensation at Nagano .
