With the M3 Amphibious Rig over the Weser river: 4 Amphibious bridging vehicles were joined to set up a ferry service for a bicycle festival at the ferry terminal in Großenwieden, Germany. For the first time, the pioneers of the German Bundeswehr were supported by British soldiers.
The 360 hp amphibious vehicle has a 360-degree rotating jet propulsion system at the bow and stern. In ferry mode, up to 63.5 tonnes of payload are possible. The maximum speed in the water is 14 k.p.h.

As a former US Army Corp of Engineers technician, I just have one thing to say about these units. This is a seriously great advancement in temporary bridge and ferry operations. Ever since I was stationed in Germany in the late 1970s, I have always been one to say _"You can't beat German Engineering"_ but I was usually referring to Mercedes Benz cars and trucks. But this rig is _very impressive_ and I am _impressed._ Kudos to the developers!

I used to work on these, the Mk2 version back in the 70/80's (28 Amphibious Engineer Regiment) out of Hameln near Hannover. They can also be a bridge if you have enough and a complicated pier set in the middle if the river was very wide. Two Mann Diesel engines, marine gearbox, transfer box (two of everything) and dead difficult to keep maintained. Seen many old Chieftain tanks going over the river on one of these. Loved my time in Hameln!

OK, I'm curious, do you think the basic design could be improved with some better / updated componentry (engines, gearboxes) to reduce the maintenance headaches? Admittedly, combination vehicles like this have a lot of tradeoffs, moving parts, and features with conflicting purposes that inherently increase maintenance needs. I find the concept and basic structure fascinating and think they could be very useful.

Watching this brings back some good memories. I spent nearly three and a half years (89-92) in Bad Kreuznach with 8th ID and 1st AD. The ridge line in the background is what I vividly remember about the terrain in Deutschland, mountains, valleys, cold ass weather and mud, lol. I honestly can't remember a warm sunny day while in the field or during training exercises. Our militaries are made up of mostly kids with mountains of responsibilities, countless duties and always training.

Waste of money. You must think the Russians are real stupid. With real time imagining from space and drones. That small town will be wiped off the map. Thousands of bodies everywhere. Cars trucks everything will be taken out. Artillery and fighter jets will take them out. Nice try. Do you really think the Russians have not figured this all out? Every river crossing in Europe has been plotted. You dont get it. Thats what they do. I would. Good luck.

@@peternorthrup6274 , what does any of that have to do with the content of the video? Also, the amphibious vehicles have equally valuable peace time applications, most notably rescuing larger groups of people from areas that are flooded. I would consider these vehicles as hardly wastes of money because inland waters are just as valuable, if not more so, than seas and ports to a battlefield advantage. Finally, what are you going to do when an enemy has taken out important bridges in an area, you moron? Vehicles that are like these, as well as those that can make bridges, are invaluable to a war effort, as well as with accessing disaster areas.
