Yes possibly painless and then migrating OS to the new SSD and then Changing boot order. The boot order change is not really accepted by the motherboard of original HDD is still there in slot. I had to temporarily disconnect the hdd, boot up with new SSD. Then I installed the hdd back

Since you already had upgraded the optane to an M2 SSD, do you recommend doing both the M2 and the SATA or would just changing the SATA drive and leaving the optane be sufficient? If only changing the SATA, how would you recommend cloning the new SATA SSD, with an adapter through the usb before installation? Finally, would your first video changing the M2 to SSD and then leaving the 1TB HDD as a backup and storage be a good route to take? If you can offer a comparison of the different configurations, that would be great. Cheers!!!

Upgrading M2 to a nvme drive will be more than enough. With the SATA HDD hp would suddenly lock the laptop if it detects a sudden movement of the laptop which was irritating when just moving from sofa to bed etc. Plus I wanted little faster response and transfer speeds. After both upgrades overall performance boost is also noticeable

Step 1: remove HDD START LAPTOP M2 SSD WILL BE DETECTED. STEP 2: NOW GO TO BIOS AND CHANGE THE BOOT ORDER TO M2 SSD as first priority STEP 3: NOW CONNECT HDD AND AFTER BOOT, REMOVE THE BOOT PARTITION IF POSSIBLE!

No disk in bios? See if SSD is detected in BIOS in boot priority after removing hdd! NVME should be detected though

You need to manually do cloning to the SSD. Then it will behave exactly like your HDD but much faster! Samsung SSDs comes with a free cloning software and is very easy and reliable

SSD is the first upgrade to do. It will be like steroids to your computer. RAM upgrade wont give such performance boost in day to day work as a SSD upgrade. Get any SSD and it will be miles better than the HDD
