I would say this is similar to a plater based hard drive, where as the data is still there. It just is not readable by the drive controller. Since the flash reader not only does a bitwise reconstruction from each cell, but also makes guess to how the geometry of the disk was constructed. Once you establish the geometry of the disk, the rest is easily reconstituted. The fascinating thing is that with flash drives, the information is not always written exactly the same every time. The controller on the flash media almost randomly puts the bits into deferent cells depending on a lot of factors. I say almost because there is a pattern, but the exact cell location is not always the same. This however affects the controllers ability to readout the data. So just using r-studio would only let you see what the controller thinks it sees and not the exact cell composition. Basically the flash controller was hiding things. The info was in the shadows per-say. This means that even after a reformat, the data can be still be read. The only data that is lost is the data in the cells with the directory. That's why if you are truly worried about privacy, you need to 0 out the disk. This being an older flash may or may not be detrimental since the cells are probably only a few bits deep. Newer 3D nand can reach up to 20 or more bits per cell. That can mean more of the data is erased on a reformat.

Had a client few months ago who switched from windows to macbook and mac os asked him to format the external hdd when he plugged it into the mac os. Of course client formated it and scan runned fro 48 hours. Luckly all files were intact.

Unbelievable! You’re the man, no doubt. I start to format my 2Tb archive by mistake recently. Stopped it immediately, but, as you know, the hd has gone. Depending on the original file system and type of format you performed. But I would assume that R-studio can recover original directory for you (I have a link to in at the top of the description box)

Once bitten twice shy ... when windows says there was an issue and wants be to reformat, I attempt data recovery if needed then completely destroy the stick most of the time. I've had too many cases where the stick has become faulty and I start loosing files/content. I don't trust a USB flash drive with an only copy of anything any more.

I never pay to anything "windows" is suggesting me, because none of that is actally good (and i you think i'm wrong i dare you - put one win msg that makes me wrong :) )... either it's nonsense and it will go away by "turning off and on again" type of thing or it's so serious win cannot do s**t on it's own anyway (and most users won't do as well). Also as you said - usb flashdrives are only for short term transfer, not storing only copy of a data (for that it's much safer to just put it on hdd that's sitting in a "safe" somewhere and even that i would consider risky :)

@@ExecutorQ3 when it comes to USB sticks it's not worth the risk! I've lost too much data in years gone by from doing EXACTLY what you've just stated. Frankly IDGAF what you think, I know that doing what you suggested has in the past caused too many issues. But you are right at the end of your statement, they are just temporary. We were in a bad spot financially at one point and USB media was cheaper for storage and it caused us a lot of issues. If you COPY not move files to the USB flash media it wouldn't be as big of an issue and USB media is getting a lot more reliable with the better brands but it's still volatile.

I have a question un-related to this video but related to data recovery. A hard drive was given to me for data recovery and it "found" about 244G on a 160G IBM hard drive and I recovered it onto a hard drive of my own, the issue I have is it found 53 files that are 4GB each which is 99 percent of this backup and the software put it into a folder that has .wmf extension which I know is an old windows media file, but I can't get any software to open them except 1 file that is 3GB; it is actually a zip file. I open this file up using 7zip and discovered that the file only contains 1MB worth of data. How can I fix these other files that may not be 4GB in size? One of this files I managed to rename .wav and it sounds like an audio file that is speed up 100x normal. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

The message will be “device not initialize”. Then it will prompt to format. It will try to write a new partition table. Probably what you see is garbage partition table.

Unlikely in this case as you see in the end data is still in the blocks inside of the NAND but not accessible via interface from translator

if I could guess, then I would look for the cause on some smd component on the flash drive which slowly does not meet the specifications and causes undervoltage or there is some sort of degradation of the memory itself which requires a voltage boost which the board is not capable off. I believe its Rose metal, so bismuth, ~ 32 % lead, ~ 18 % tin by weight. Melting point is 93-96 °C

Flash extractor has more powerful functions than PC3000, but its disadvantage is that program developers should not only update new functions, but PC3000FLASH requires you to have more basic knowledge of NAND FLASH. There is no one tool that is best, and they work together to be the best tool!

I feel like I should clarify. R-studio can only read assembled devices that are initialized. Correction on the such device is done via controller by hardware. Error correction that I implement in this video is done only on the NAND, and parameters to improve the quality of the read had to be modified

I really enjoyed the video. I have seen RAW format errors before. This is usually when the MBR is corrupt and therefore it doesn't understand how to mount the file system. You could use a copy of the RAW image and prove that with testdisk. It does have the ability to restore the MBR from the backup sector. Might be nice follow up and to prove that chip removal was indeed the only way.
