HDMI-ARC for Non -Techies Connect an Audio System to Smart TV (Part 1 of 4)

You can connect a Smart TV to ANY Surround Sound, Stereo System , soundbar.
This video shows how to use HDMI ARC ( HDMI Audio Return Channel) for Home Theater sound.
HDMI ARC may be used even with stereo systems which have no HDMI ports, by using simple inexpensive adapters. All configurations in this video have remote control of volume and mute using the TV remote control even if the Audio system is not equipped with a remote control.

My dad was hard of hearing so I used the Digital Audio Out on our older TV which didn't have RCA outputs, Bluetooth, or indeed even a headphone jack and connected the cable to a Digital to Analog converter. The one I chose had a volume control on it, a 3.5mm output jack and RCA outputs on it. On the output side of the converter I plugged in a Bluetooth transmitter into the 3.5mm output jack and connected them to a set of Bluetooth headphones. It worked great, he could listen to the TV at his comfort level while i could use the volume control from the TV speaker to listen at my comfort level. I still have it connected to the TV although my dad passed away 6 years ago.

Just bought an 86" LG 4K Smart TV and I was considering getting rid of my Yamaha Home Theatre system because it's from 2003 but works perfect. I had the whole system up for sale until I saw this video. I had my 2001 56" Toshiba Rear Projection TV for sale with the system as I knew no one wants a 350 lb. TV. so I figured the old home theatre system probably won't work with the new TV. I had the TV, Home Theatre (6 speakers and sub along with storage towers and bridge) for sale for $400. Oh my, somehow I was finally able to understand the back of our old Denon 5 channel receiver. Just hooked up all the dusty unused speakers to it, including the subwoofer, and an optical cable to the new tv and the sound is AMAZING. You are so right, out of the box the new Hisense sounded truly horrible. I reconnected the center speaker we’ve always kept using then decided to hook them all up, and so glad I did. You have many other videos I plan to watch. Thank you for this !

So, that's why my new and shiny LG G2 has a terrible and muffled sound while my 15-year-old non-HD LG tv had a very decent sound. I thought it was the new and empty room that caused the problem. Thanks for your comment. You can beleive your ears, and ironically sometimes a cheap TV will sound better than a more expensive ultra thin model. In any case, none of them can match a typical receiver and pair of bookshelf speakers. It's not even close.

Roger, I got from the UK Amazon the equivalent to the converter you recommended (on the USA Amazon), and, following your instructions, have got it set up and working. Marvellous. But I am wondering why we can't now control volume on the TV, and have to get up and adjust the volume on the amplifier manually. With the constant changes of volume between channels and programmes, that's a bit of a nuisance. Do you think there's a way to get the TV volume control working with the new set-up, please? Thank you Roger! I was actually unaware that there were "ARC" HDMI audio extractors. I've used the regular HDMI audio extractor successfully. But to now learn that the RCA analog outputs have variable volume functionality - that is totally awesome for a modern TV passing great audio to an older Receiver. And - if you use an Energy Saving smart powerstrip where the TV plugs into the 'control' outlet, then it will auto power on the outlet used to plug in the old Receiver!

@@keetvhdlimited962 it uses a 'wall wart' for the power, so it's kinda up to you if you want to have that wall wart in a switched outlet/power strip. I would think it'd be fine to leave on 24/7 with as little power draw as it does. But the extractor isn't smart enough to power on/off based on the signal from the TV. Hope that helps.

@@stevenkeane572 You can connect an additional monitor to a USB C port if you have one. You will need a USB C to HDMI, or USB C to VGA adapter depending on the type of monitor that you have.

Hi Darren Thanks for the comment. That surround system should be great for movies and computer games . The ARC adapter is a good solution but uning the optical connection on the home theater unit directly, will save you money, clutter and is genarally more reliable. Your boys will have to use the home theater remote for volume but for the younger crowd I have never heard any objections to that. They will likely set the volume to max and leave it there anyway. On some systems I have measured slightly less delay over optical vs ARC. iI's way too small ta difference to notice on movies, but gamers are very picky about delays.

I have question : Can I get sound this way pairing an old Sony TV with HDMI ARC and a recent TV box (that lacks any RCA port I used to have, only HDMI and SPDIF ports) and the HDMI ARC audio extractor? Before it went => Sony TV - HDMI -> TV box - RCA -> Tuner / Pre-amp (DENON DRA-700AE) -> Jamo Speakers But as mentioned there is no RCA ports any more on the new 4K TV Box and the Tuner / Pre-amp dont have any HDMI port.

Very clear and precise. The permutations of systems, equipment and devices is pretty nigh endless. My question is what do I need to operate two old B&W speakers from my 2020 LG smart TV, there doesn't appear to be anywhere that relates to that particular scenario!

Hi Your TV has HDMI ARC and your speakers will need an Amp so the system I show in this video will work for you. kzbin.info/www/bejne/p2qbooejiJhqhaM Just substitute your speakers for the Dayton ones shown in the video. I use these exact electronics on my own TV with a pair of old JBL speakers and the sound is really good. II's a decent HiFi Standard for very little cost. I hide the amp and adapter in a cabinet under the TV which is possible since the TV remote controls the volume. If you wanted a neater all in one solution the Arylic B50 is well priced, but I have tried it, and I don't think the amp will do justice to your nice B&W speakers. It's a big step up in price to get a Wiim Amp. Which I haven't yet tried but is highly recommended by many, It includes a music streamer and can be synced to systems in other rooms so it is still good value at 5x the price of my suggested system, but if you just want to use those old speakers for TV viewing the components in the video above are hard to beat,

Hi Roger, I have found that your videos are very useful and you are very articulate and well prepared to do your videos. I have a question/problem. In looking through your 4 part videos I feel you did cover a lot but I think my situation was missed.I have a bose cinemate series II digital home theater system. It is completely wired, it doesn't use HDMI. It has an interface module that connects to the tv through RCA plugs or through optical cable. My tv. is not quite 2 yrs old it's an LG 55" it's the one that is on a glass panel, super thin, beautiful picture! My problem is that the tv is very modern indeed but if I want to take advantage of ARC hdmi connector I can't becasue the bose interface module doesn't have that type of connector, it has on the back 1 red 1 white RCA female connector and a receptacle for an optical cable, until now I've used the optical cable, BUT, I would like to be able to turn on the tv without having to do a second step to turn on the bose separately, I want to utilize the ARC hdmi connector on the tv, but how? I was thinking that a HDMI to RCA cable might do the trick but I see that all the cables sold include a video rca plug, the interface module doesn't have a receptacle for that. Hi Jim Unfortunately the turn on and off commands will not pass through any form of HDMI adapter. You have apparently figured out that your LG sound sync feature will control the volume and mute so your optical now works just like ARC would through an adapter. If you have a cable or sattelite remote or use a Fire TV then that remote will be able to turn on the bose system and TV with one push, but the only other way I know of is to use a universal learning remote that supports macro's. I must admit I have lived with turning the audio on seperately for years. One possible solution but only for audio that has a meechanical on off switch rather than an elecronic one, ( This is largely for old vintage audio and I doubt it will work you.) is to use a current sensing power strip. The TV plugs into the sense socket and as soon as it powers up it turns on the switched sockets. Unfortunately this will likely only put your system in stanby mode and you will still have to turn it on

Hi, It depends on the format of the sound source. With ARC the best one for the content may be selected automatically, but if not then generally dolby is best for movies and a synthesized 5 channel mode might be better for regular TV channels.

Some TV's have much better headphone outputs than othes if the sound from yours is clean without any audible static or buzzing then you are unlikely to notice any improvement with an ARC adaptor.

Great info ... I wonder ,do you know how to connect a mixer to a surround sound system which has only one hdmi arc out , optical out and red and white rca out connection ...tv is oled sony bravia it has optical out , headphone socket to use as audio out ,or hdmi arc ...no matter what I try I can't get sound to go through the surround system , signal going in but not coming out ..any ideas please??

Hi You don't mention what type of surround system that you have but on any that I have encountered, if you only have one HDMI one optical and one RCA those will all be inputs not outputs and you will not be able to get any sound from them. To connect the mixer you will need to split the sound from the TV. This is where it gets tricky. If you use the headphone output you will have the same volume control going to the mixer and the surround but you will have just have stereo not surround sound. If you use optical you will have surround sound but will have to control the volume of the mixer and surround system seperately, which may not work for you. Splitting the HDMI ARC is not possible. I would suggest that you use a Y cable out of the headphone jack with one RCA connection to the Surround System and one to the Mixer and also an optical connection to the surround system. When you just want to listen to the TV you select the optical input on the surround system and listen in full surround sound. When you want to use the mixer you select the RCA input, and the surround speakers and mixer volumes will be controllable in sync from the TV, but you will only have stereo. Hope this helps.

Hi Steve Yes the default settings on the TV will pass on 5.1 surround sound to the soundbar or receiver. If it doesn't work correctly check the sound settings and digital audio out over HDMI ARC it should be set to Auto (preferred,) or on some TV's bitstream or 5.1. The option PCM or LPCM only works for 2 channel stereo.

Thanks for your easy to follow instructions - I am a 70 year old non-tech lady who got almost everything working fine save for one thing. I have a new Phillips Roku tv but a 20 year old receiver/stereo system that used to support my 14 year old Phillips flat screen via RCA cables - TV, DVD and am/fm went through all the speakers fine. With the ARC adaptor I am getting sound through both speakers and a subwoofer for the DVD player but for some reason only 1 speaker is playing sound for the TV when in normal use - any idea what could be wrong? My xfinity cable box and DVD are connected to the TV via HDMI and I made sure to connect the adapter to the ARC outlet.

Hi Claire Thanks for the clear problem description. You’ve clearly done everything right since the DVD works fine, and you get at least some sound from the cable box. Since everything else is working, the problem is most likely the Xfinity box settings. The Xfinity website suggestion is 1. Press the xfinity button on your remote. 2. Highlight Settings (the gear icon) and press OK on your remote. 3. Highlight Device Settings and press OK on your remote. 4. Use the down arrow on your remote to highlight Audio and press OK. 5. Use the down arrow to highlight Audio Language (SAP) Reset and press OK 6. Use the down arrow to highlight HDMI audio press OK 7. Select “Stereo” (you do not want Auto or Auto Detect) Also check the audio settings on the TV are set to PCM or Stereo (sometimes PCM-Stereo) The menu structure will be something like. Home Screen >Settings>Audio >S/PDIF and ARC (possibly “HDMI-ARC”) > ( make sure this is set to PCM-Stereo NOT Auto) These menu’s may be a little different depending on the specific model but it should be close enough for you to find your way. If this doesn’t work call Xfinity they can do a software update and/or reset of your box over the cable without a service call. Good luck.

I have a Sony DAV-SR2 which doesn't show any "input" or "tape" options, only the Speaker option (with all the green, white, purple and red cables) and the Scart unit at the Euro AV Outpu (to TV) option and I have all the cables connect from the previous owner. My question is: there's a Optical Digital (IN) option which i'm guessing it's called the TOSLINK? Is it okay to connect it to my TV only using the optical cable or is it best to buy the ARC audio extractor? If yes, then I don't know where to put the cables, cause I don't seem to have the "Input" or "Tape" options, but I might be wrong? It's my first time seeing this so thanks for your help! :)

Hi Daniel I found the manual for the SCART version online. It looks like the easiest way to connect is to use an optical cable connected to the “Optical Digital In". The other end will go to an output on the TV which may be labelled “Toslink”, “Digital Audio Out”, “SPDIF” or “Optical”, or some combination of these. They are all different names for the same thing, totally interchangeable. Push the function button on your remote, and repeat until “SAT” appears on the front panel display. The TV sound should now work through the speakers. In this case push the function button on the remote repeatedly until “VIDEO” appears on the front panel display. Hi Siswadi, Dolby Pro Logic decoders create a good surround sound effect from normal stereo sources and will continue to do that using one of the converters.

Hey Rodger I found this series very informative. But I have a question. I have a new Sony Bravia smart tv and a old Sony GX900ES receiver set up for home Theater. I was very interested in the Arc audio extractor you mentioned. The problem I have is that the GX900ES has no optical no HDMI or AUX and the Tape RC plug-ins are marked Rec-out and IN. Hi Jim An ARC adapter will work well with your receiver, which is more modern, versatile and high end than the one I showed in the video, and offers you a choice of suitable inputs depending on what you already have connected. If you are not already using the “TV IN” then that would be ideal. If you have a lot of equipment connected, then any of the following that are spare, would also work well “TAPE IN”, “DAT/MD IN”, “VIDEO 1 IN”, “VIDEO 2 IN”, “LD IN”, or even “CD IN” Do not use “PHONO IN” for anything other than a turntable but any of the other inputs are fine. Your receiver is a very high quality, well-engineered unit which will sound just as good as it did 30ish years ago when it was made. With good speakers and a properly set up room, it is capable of sound that is hard to beat at any price. Enjoy!

I'm using similar reciever, I've got an older Sony receiver that doesn't have hdmi optical...my TV is older but new than receiver and has only the hdmi arc, and optical audio for outputs. I had managed to figure out some sort of odd connection with what I have which is a couple bluetooth adapters that have rca connections and other one has a 3.5 adapter that I plugged into the USB outlet on my LG tv, ide somehow made it so the sound was going through the rca connections from TV to the rca to 3.5 adapter...I'm probably not explaining all this right but I know it wasn't a normal way or way the connectors were supposed to be used for...ide at some point altered something and messed it all up and now I can't get it to work again, soo soo bummed out. My issue I think lays mainly in my audio settings between the TV the ruko device sound settings and the reciever settings...it's hard to remember all the different settings I'm troubleshooting through trying to figure out where I messed it up at. And what sucks is I'm seeing your saying don't use Phono, and im pretty sure that's the one I had been using. But it sounded amazing the way I had it set up with my Sony speakers, I have all Sony speakers for surround sound but they're from different reciever and just using on this one. I do know my other streaming device worked best cus I could acually use the Bluetooth setting and had it connected that way somehow. I feel like the way my wires look all twisted and tangled. I've given up until I can get the one adapter I acually need, the optical to rca adapter to just do this the right way. Do you think the hdmi arc sound quality is better than the optical?

sorry to pester, but ive a couple questions. My Dumb, but new RCA flatscreen has 3 HDMI ports. I'm using the ARC port for Dish TV connection . I have a simple tube amp that has an Optical plug input. Should I just run an optical cord from the TV Optical jack into the amp for TV sound through my stereo system? I'm gradually getting this figured out. Still have to figure out the Roku connection. Hi Bill, If the amp has a remote control, then an optical connection from the TV to the amp directly is the best cheapest and easiest solution. Hi Peter Vizio TV's are great because they have both Chromecast and Airrplay built in, so whether you have Android or Apple you can cast to the TV and play music. Spotify will display album art, the artist name and song title on the TV. If you want to listen to music with the TV turned off though, a Bluetooth adapter will work if you have a spare input on your speakers. A network music streamer which uses your WiFi network is a much better choice than Bluetooth however. It is more convenient to use than bluetooth, once set up for the first time, it is just like casting to the TV but there's no video. The connection is much more reliable than Bluetooth and the sound quality is far superior. The Arylic up2Stream S10 is an entry level streamer and great value. Hi Roger...just watched your video and I have a question about connecting an old (70's) Panasonic SE-60 receiver with turntable. The only ports on the Panasonic are phono in, aux and receiver out. The turntable is hooked to phono, but I want to connect it to a Yamaha RX-V475 receiver surround. My TV is Samsung and does not have ARC connection, neither does the Yamaha. All I want to do is listen to my retro vinyl on the Panasonic thru surround. Also, the original Turbo Thruster speakers are hooked to the Panasonic receiver. Will they play, as well, if it can be connected to the Yamaha receiver? I hope this makes sense...Thanks for your videos and your time!

Hi Ludy. The Rec out on your Panasonic is actually record out. It was intended for a tape recorder, but is perfect for what you want to do. Just connect Rec out on the Panasonic to Aux in on the Yamaha and you will be able to use the turntable. The volume will be controlled by the Yamaha, the volume on the Panasonic will have no effect.

Hi Bluetooth compresses the sound intentionally to ensure reliability over a limited bandwidth link. This has the effect of making the sound less lively and rather lifeless. The audibility of this depends on the quality of playback system but is normally quite significant. You will likely notice some good improvement in clarity by going to HDMI ARC which for stereo is uncompressed.

Hi Roger, I have my TV connected to a hi-fi amplifier via the eARC and one of those boxes, but the TV disables the volume and mute function, so I have to control everything with the amp's vol knob. I can't find any info about this particular model of TV - it's a Toshiba 50UA3D63DB. Toshiba's site doesn't list it, the closest being a UA3A63DB, but it's not quite the same and the user manual pdf shows different functions to mine. I was wondering if you knew if there was any way to regain the remote's vol. and mute function?

Hi If you are using an ARC adapter, the volume and mute will only work out of the analog RCA outputs The digital optical or coax outputs will not give you volume control. If you get no volume functionality from the RCA outputs then your TV and adapter may have a compatibility problem. It’s worth trying to update the TV software (Settings>Device Preferences>About menu) as the latest version may have some bug fixes. Otherwise try turning the CEC function off then on with the adapter connected.

Slight audio delays of less than a tenth of a second are common but 4 seconds is huge and unusual. The delays are usually due to automatic audio format conversions. Your PC is likely sending the TV a high definition or multi-channel format that it has to convert to regular PCM stereo. Go to your PC settings and make sure that the sound card driver the OS and the application you are using all have their settings on “PCM” “LPCM” or “Stereo” some of these settings may be automatic and not user adjustable if you can chose the sample rate and resolution go with “48Khz 16bit” which is standard definition TV audio. Additionaly HDMI audio delays are often adjustable in the TV menus, and a delay which has been set to the maximum may account for the unusually large discrepancy between SPDIF and HDMI

Good question, It would be nice because adding a subwoofer definitely adds drama to movies. Unfortunately most TV's automatically turn off the internal speakers if you have an ARC device connected. An optical connection won't work either because of seperate volume controls for the internal and external speakers. Hi Roger great video thanks. maybe you could answer a question that no amount of googling has answered for me. I have a new samsung smart TV with an Onkyo receiver connected via the ARC HDMI. Everything works and the tv controller controls the receiver volume. All my other sources are plugged into the Onkyo receiver (playstation, Sky Q box etc) and we use the smart TV for netflix, prime and youtube with the sound going via ARC.. It works BUT is there a better way. The issue I have is there is always the need for having 2 controls. the source button on the TV only switches its own sources so for exmaple I have to switch to the HDMI with the Onkyo connected to get Sky on and then I must use the Onkyo remote to select Sky as the input. I am wondering now.. should I connect all my sources to the TV but just ensure that the Onkyo receiver is connected to HDMI ARC. This way the TV effectively becomes the source selector for all sources(internal smart and external). I havent seen anybody doing this but I dont see the drawback as long as I have enough HDMI ports on the TV.

Hi Raymond I normally connect all the video sources to the TV. And consider that to be the best practice. This eliminates the double input selection. There are 2 potential downsides which may not apply in your case. If your TV did not support eARC vs ARC then you may have needed to connect directly to the receiver for surround sound formats that require eARC (Dolby Atmos). Since your TV is new this will not be a problem for you. The second potential downside is for video sources used for audio only, like a Chromecast, Fire TV or Apple TV streaming music or podcasts, or a Blue Ray player playing music CD’s. In these cases, you will need to have the TV screen on when you only want audio. With those two limitations understood, I still personally connect all my HDMI sources to the TV for convenience.

Hi Bond it’s nice to hear from a fellow fan of 2 channel audio. Since you are using Tidal MQA and a dedicated DAC, you obviously care about better than average sound quality. The best 2 channel quality you will get from any TV is via the Toslink optical connection to an external dedicated DAC. This is what I use with my Sony Bravia 4K TV. The standalone DAC easily exceeds the quality of the TV’s internal DAC or that of most AV receivers or integrated amps even costly ones. If you download the Tidal app on the TV then this setup will undoubtably play, and sound great. Unfortunately everything I’ve been able to read about MQA and Chromecast (which is what Sony uses to stream music to the TV) says that Chromecast no longer supports MQA This is where I have to confess to being a cheapskate and not paying for Tidal, so I have been unable to test this, but I do know that when I stream my local hi res music to Chromecast it always down samples to 48Khz PCM. Which is still good, much better than the best you can get from Spotify, but Tidal is capable of better. My recommendation is to use the TV for music videos, and use a dedicated streamer which supports MQA for music only.

I would like to use the HDMI set up BUT I have 2 gaming consoles both support arc plus I have a fire cube. I need all 3 hooked up to the surround sound not that hard to figure out where I get lost is how will I change video input from say fire cube to the Xbox will I still be able to use "Alexa" voice commands. Hi Miguel, I think it will all make more sense once you have your home theater system. You have three HDMI sources, and your TV has 3 standard HDMI sockets and one ARC socket. The gaming consoles and Fire Cube can be connected to the 3 standard inputs. Your surround system ARC socket connects to the TV ARC socket. Connected this way you will get surround sound from all inputs and the internal TV's apps.

Hi, That is an interesting question, Although HDMI and SCART are completely different and incompatible standards it is theoretically possible to use an HDMI ARC to RCA audio adapter and connect it via a stereo RCA cable to an RCA to SCART adapter which can plug in to your receiver SCART socket. The SCART adapter has an input/output switch, which you would need to switch to input. Since I live in the US, I have not tested any equipment with a SCART connecter which is a European standard, so I can’t guarantee this will work. In any case If your receiver has an Aux input it would be cheaper and simpler to connect the HDMI ARC audio adapter to that instead. But most new tvs dont come out with the RCA jack out nowadays as they emphasize on going "digital" ( optical/HDMI) which is pain in t =he arse as mainly soundbars only come with HDMI and optical. and this device allows u to take the sound dac out of the tv ( literally) and use yr own one and then make it have a variety of jacks for output to connect e.g. PC or bookshelf speakers that typically dont have HDMI or optical

Great video! I don’t know if I didn’t catch it or what, but I’ve never heard anybody answer my question. When you want to just play music or listen to the radio from your receiver, which is connecteded to EARC, can you just turn the receiver on without turning the TV on. my remote on my TV is working great at controlling the whole thing, and I don’t want to break the link between the EARC and the TV or screw it up in someway. It can depend on the settings. There may be a setting on the reciver that allows it to turn on other devices. In that case it would turn on the TV when you turn it on so that is not what you want and should not be enabled. It's best to try turning on the receiver on its own remote first. The receiver should turn on without turning the TV on and you can use it normally without the TV. When you turn on the TV it should configure the receiver for TV sound and play through your speakers.

Hi Dan A very good solution for you is the Arylic B50. It is a unique product and is perfect for what you are looking to do. It has inputs for HDMI ARC, optical, and RCA line inputs. You can also use Bluetooth as an input, and it has a Bluetooth transmitter for driving Bluetooth headphones reliably. I use one myself connected to my Family Room TV and it works very well. It will drive any non-powered speakers that you chose. I use vintage JBL speakers for my TV, but I have tested Dayton Audio B652’s and Jamo S801 and either works well in this application. Hi Bobbie Check the LED on the receiver box for the 2 rear speakers if it is red then the wireless signal is probably too weak. it's tempting to put the box on the floor behind the couch but that may not work well in a large room. Try pairing with the receiver box close to the sound bar and sub. Battled with this for days but cannot get sound from the tv to my amp. Tried factory reset on the tv alternate hdmi cables, all the tv settings, different RCA cables. I’m using the ARC hdmi output of an LG OLED tv (quite new) and a new Toslink adapter. I can only conclude that the adapter is faulty - or I am still doing something wrong!

Hi Roger, I have surround sound cables coming out of my wall. Our home was built in 2002 so not hdmi friendly. They are just wires. How do I connect to our new modern 2024 Sony tv? Do I need HDMI optical and if so how do I connect the wires to the optical component? Help

Hi Roger. Thanks for your video. Few days later i will get a new lg smart tv and i should connect it with an old (approx 12 years old) bose t20 5.1 home teather. The bose has an HDMI output named "video out". Do i need to use an arc extractor (from Standard hdmi to arc hdmi) or is enough to connect directly the tv arc hdmi to the bose Hdmi "video out "? Clearly I would like to use the tv remore controll to manage the bose volume.

Bose systems have excellent remote controls that also operate most TV's. Whenever I've set up a Bose system I've always been pleasantly surprised at how well the remote control integrates with the other components. It has been for me, and the people I've set them up for, a hassle free and totally reliable experience. Before you try anything else I'd recommend setting up the audio exactly as it shows in the Bose operators manual and try using the Bose remote for the complete system.

Top video, thanks and subscribed .. so i have a new tv.. there is 3 HDMI ports, none of them are ARC, i have an older 5.1 panasonic home theatre which has 1 HDMI port and that is ARC... no matter how i configure the system, the home theatre doesnt work, but worked fine on my older tv.. any suggestions would be greatly appreciated

The best audio connection method in your case is to use an optical cable. Optical works just as well with 5.1 surround sound as HDMI.

The PS4 works with the two of doors, the tv recognize "something" connected, but like turned off. The same cable with the converter works with my laptop. I have verified all the settings of the tv. Everything is ok. Help me please.

Hi Grupo There are two different types of HDMI audio adapter and the type that works with a PC or PS4 will not work with a TV. THe type of adapter you need has only one HDMI port and that one is labelled ARC. Hi Great that you are not scrapping a perfectly good audio system which will sound so much better than the TV speakers. The sound quality through an HDMI ARC to RCA adapter is excellent, there will be no discernable loss of quality compared to any other sources. The only Caveat is that the output from these devices is stereo only, not surround sound. Most 5.1 systems will generate a pleasing surround sound effect from stereo sources so you will get great sound from all speakers, but you won’t get the full Dolby digital experience. Even though you have a 5.1 speaker system you will need to set the TV’s digital audio out to PCM or Stereo and not 5.1 Surround sound or Auto.

Stereo pcm or uncompressed.stereo has 2x better clarity (1400 kps wav) vs than dolby signal (640 kps). Regular Dolby and dts are equivalent to mp3 or aac sound quality. This is why compact disc audio sounds better than mp3 because compact disc stores uncompressed wav Dolby and dts are compressed to save bandwidth space on ARC . Uncompressed dolby and dts are called dolby true hd and dts master hd. U need E-Arc to output them

Your Sony unit can play the sound from the You Tube videos or any other programming on your TV provided that the audio from the TV is connected to the audio input jacks. Some Sony DVD/Surround units have an optical connection. If yours does then this is the best connection to use. Otherwise use the red and white RCA audio in jacks. If your TV only has an optical output for the audio, you can use an optical to RCA audio adapter. When connected this way, use the “TV/Cable” setting on your Sony Unit to play the sound of whatever you are playing on the TV. If you use an optical cable and find that there is no sound, go to the TV's Sound or audio settings and set the Digital output to “PCM” “LPCM” or “Stereo”

Is there any advantage in using an ARC HDMI audio extractor over taking the audio out via the 3.5mm earphone socket on the TV and putting it into the phono input an amplifier? The extractor doesn't give you the advantage of being able to turn on/off the amp, as I understand it, and doesn't it send an analogue signal? Thanks.

Since your TV has a 3.5mm earphone socket, a direct connection will work, but unfortunately the analog outputs on some TV’s are quite noisy which can be pretty obvious when connected to a nice stereo. I demo this in the following video kzbin.info/www/bejne/favSdKuIYsh3iac Timestamp 10:50. the ARC adapter eliminates this problem. A direct analogue connection is a simple inexpensive solution though, so I encourage you to try it before buying an adapter. The ARC adapter does provide analog output and would connect to exactly the same input on the amp. Neither solution offers on/off control of the amp but one of the viewers of this video offered a solution in his comment today using a smart power strip. Which may be worth trying. RCA type analogue connections are sometimes confusingly called phono plugs and that may be how you are describing a generic amp input, but never connect a TV or any line level output to an amp input that is actually labelled phono. The phono inputs are for turntables only and will distort badly with any other kind of device.

Using the earphones out port from tv is not advisable for speakers. The earphones port is meant to drive earphones. It's.better to use aux or rca out from tv for proper sound quality

Thank you, Roger. But unfortunately, despite its general helpfulness, it doesn't address my problem. I want to connect our fairly new LG TV with RCA connections with our old but very old (1970s) Celestion speakers with separate handscrew terminals. Is this possible? We don't have any of the original equipment that went with the speakers, but we do have an old amplifier that we used to use with an old TV with the speakers. Can you or anyone advise, please, because my attempts so far haven't worked.

Hi Richard It's definitely possible to use your old speakers but you will need an amplifier. Your old one will be fine if it is in good working condition. Most new or newish LG TVs do not have analog outputs only digital. Old stereo equipment will need to have these signals converted to analog. Changing the RCA cables is unlikely to fix the electronic noise. Make sure the Receiver is silent when the cable is disconnected. If so, then try turning the TV volume up and controlling the volume from the receiver. Does the noise reduce? If so the problem is with the TV output, some TV’s are pretty noisy on their RCA outputs. Otherwise, If the noise is a hum or low buzz then you could have a ground loop. This most commonly happens because a cable system ground is different from the household ground. This causes a small ground current to flow through the RCA cable which will be amplified by the receiver. Ground loops or a noisy RCA output are both solved by using an optical connection from the TV to the receiver. Perhaps you can help with this mystery. I used your video to get the ARC adapter needed to create a HDMI to RCA connection to an amplifier. I have a Samsung TV and a Comcast cable box. I am receiving audio through the speakers if I use the amplifier alone with the Bluetooth function, or FM, and an audio signal if using the Comcast Cable box, but as soon as I try to listen to a show through one of the streaming apps like Netflix or KZbin, nothing. I have the audio settings on the TV set to PCM. Thanks in advance.

Hi Ted If I understand your question correctly you are getting audio from everything except the TV. It seems like theHDMI ARC is not working at all for you. For a Samsung TV I suggest doing an audio reset first as I have seen this clear up ARC issues on Samsung. Also make sure Anynet+ which is Samsung's name for HDMI-CEC is turned on.

Any output labelled coaxial is a digital SPDIF (Sony, Phillios Digital InterFace) signal which is functionally the same as the optical output. The difference is that signal is carried by a copper wire instead of an optical fiber.

Hi Dann DirecTV is just another video source and I recommend connecting it to an open HDMI port on Your TV (Any port except the one labelled as ARC) and not connect it to the receiver even if your receiver has HDMI inputs. If your receiver has ARC or eARC then connect an HDMI cable between the ARC port on the TV and the receiver HDMI out. If the Receiver does not support ARC then connect an optical cable between the TV optical output and Receiver optical input. If the settings on the TV and Receiver are correct then this should all work perfectly.

Hi Jose, Yes that will work, the TV will output the sound from anything connected to it. Since you are connecting a gaming system I suggest using the optical (or the analogue RCA) output because I've measured less latency from these outputs than ARC.
