I'm 63, and this solo still gives me the chills. DG is the greatest ever. Notice how really talented guitarists have no need to dance around and showboat. They just play! I've looped this solo into an hour long track, just cant stop listening.

Unless of course you're a virtuoso like Tommy Emmanuel and just naturally hyperactive and can't sit still! That's just his nature and there's no doubt he's really talented! Tommy aside, I still mostly agree with what you're saying. As long as some 'stank face' action such as Joe Bonamassa for example isn't included in that! 😉

And thanks to ridiculous copyright laws, the descendants of David Gilmour will still be collecting royalties from this song when your grandkids are retired. Copyright laws now protect works of art for the life of the artist PLUS ONE HUNDRED YEARS! The original copyright laws in the USA were for 12 years, plus an optional 12 year extension for a maximum total of 24 years, after which the work went into the "public domain." Lobbyists from the entertainment industry and corrupt politicians wrecked the system.

The neatest thing about David is that unlike so many other legends, he hasn’t missed a beat as he has grown older. I once read that’s because he continues to practice when he’s not playing out. His concert in Pompeii is one for the ages. One of the very best guitarists of all time!👍

It is interesting to witness the evolution of this solo from its origin in the The Wall live days to the mid-80s. This version is in between the original version and the epic prolonged, slower version that Gilmour made a central part of the show in the late-PF era. Some licks and some phrases appear in this 1984 version that later would be reordered and eventually compose the latest version of the solo. It is also interesting to note that this 1984 version is in the middle also as far as the tempo is concerned: not quite slow as from the Lapse tour but already slower than the The Wall version.

Chris Cornell commented on singing his lyrics differently in the studio versus live he was talking about going into a session without a definite understanding of how his own lyrics were too be sung, he would just try it some certain ways and that was that, that later having it be " different or untypical" versus what Was on wax would bother him like there was never a defined way to do any of that; same applies with David//

Eddie Van Halen, when asked who his favorite guitarist was, answered “David Gilmour hands down. He can do more with a single note than I can do with the entire fretboard.” Atmosphere is so key and taken for granted by non-guitarists. I'd always thought this song was about heroin. I later learned it wasn't. One day I was quite ill, in excruciating pain from a brain tumor. Had intracranial pressure due to the spinal fluid building up in my skull. I was rushed to hospital and injected with fentanyl. I immediately felt as though my soul had left my body. I floated away into an abyss of softness and tranquility. I was overcome with a pleasant warmth. I had zero pain and not a care in the world. I recall looking at my mum, who'd accompanied me to hospital, and said "Now I know what Pink Floyd meant by 'comfortably numb." I myself had become comfortably numb via Fentanyl. I can totally understand how one could become addicted. I've never forgotten that feeling since that injection in 1997. No....I've never done drugs and I'm not an addict, but I have much empathy for those suffering in pain and opioids are their only reprieve. But good gosh, what a feeling it is to be 'comfortably numb.' PS. I do not condone the use of any narcotic substances, I'm merely recalling a moment in time with relation to PF's beautiful song.

Great comment. The Wall sounded like a clinical, almost hospital like setting. Part of what makes it soulful is this “juxtaposition” of the numbness in the arrangement with Gilmour’s fiery guitar works IMO… regards.

Ни что не вечно под луной,но эта музыка не сравнима ни счем!Жаль что нынешние музыканты орут-что вижу,то и пою! Творчество как таковое отсутствует и это печально.Очень жаль,что талантливых людей всё меньше и меньше.
