"Sorrow" Written by singer and guitarist David Gilmour, it is the closing track on their thirteenth studio album, A Momentary Lapse of Reason, released in 1987
Drummer Nick Mason has since stated that the song was almost entirely written by David Gilmour alone over the space of one weekend on his houseboat Astoria. When he returned from the weekend, only "some spit and polish", according to Mason, was needed. Gilmour has also mentioned that the solo at the end of "Sorrow" was done on the boat, his guitar going through a small Gallien-Krueger amplifier.
Sorrow was a poem I'd written as a lyric before I wrote music to it, which is rare for me.
- David Gilmour

I saw the Pulse concert live in 1994. Lots of people claim that Pink Floyd was at there peak during the Wall. They must have not seen Pulse! I didn’t miss Waters at all! If Richard Wright hadn’t got sick with cancer and passed away, there is no telling what we could have seen. To me, Pulse was Pink Floyd’s peak. So many good songs added to their catalog with early Waters songs. Songs we might have not had if Waters had stayed with the band. Sorrow, Coming Back To Life, On The Turning Away, Poles Apart, High Hopes and Learning To Fly just to name a few.

@@sonus289: Don’t know what planet you are from, but Pink Floyd never self destructed. Roger Waters left the band. But the band kept on going without Waters and never really missed a beat. They released some very successful albums without Waters and sold out concert events everywhere they went. Arenas and stadiums. Pink Floyd disbanded upon Richard Wright’s death. Most of us real fans never missed Waters. I think ol Roger got an unpleasant surprise. He assumed that the band would die off at his departure. I think he grossly underestimated Dave, Richard and Nick. And the fans. Roger left on his own accord and got quite pissy after the band carried on without him. Kind of bruised his massive ego! Roger should have remembered that they also carried on with Syd. Who was at the time, the bands primary song writer, vocalist and guitarist. Yet the band flourished without Syd Barrett. Pink Floyd proved they could survive and be successful without Roger Waters.

What a masterpiece! What a performance! What a band! What a music! What a solo!! But let me tell you that I am catched here by the lyrics.. seems that it talks about my sad story with my only real love that I have just lost.. I love a girl that was forced by some circumstances to leave me and marry an other dude who doesn't desearve her and even she doesn't want..Yes she's married by now and I can't get her out of my existance whatever I tried.. so like in the lyrics I am haunted by the memory of a lost paradise.. there is dust in my eyes that blinds my sight.. silence that speaks so much louder than words of promises broken.. I am chained forever to a word that's departed.. Sorry guys for bothering you with that story but trust me I am in a real deep grim since almost five months and I needed to talk.. Thanks for your patience and special thanks to the greatest, to the artist, to M. David Gilmour.. Greetings from Morocco

A while back I heard his ex-wife Ginger recounting a story of how she was lying in bed with him one time, and he suddenly morphed into Jesus (he was asleep at the time) - ordinarily I'd be sceptical about a story like that, but where David Gilmour's concerned it seems completely plausible :-)

@@Rebecca-pr4zp both Syd and Roger are a major part in the Pink Floyd story. However after both almost killing the Floyd, Rick, Nick, and David carried on and gave us many more years of the primes of their lives. Roger just sat and brooded and well Syd is a sad story and such a waste. Personally I will take the 20 plus extra years that the other three gave us. I saw Pink Floyd a half dozen times and I have to tell you they were so much better in the 80s and 90s than they ever were in the 70's. I respect your opinion though and you have a point. The Floyd would have never been without the contributions of all.

I saw Pink Floyd three times. I saw there first time they played in the US. It was Melted . It was a free concert. Now one ever heard of them. Station WMMS. WAS telling people to go and they would blow your mind. It was in Cleveland, Ohio. Everyone couldn't say nothing. Cos every one had their jaws on the grown. A maxing. Then they came to Cleveland in the old stadium. The world of Rock. They was jamming but started fading out but still jamming. Then their 747 flue over the stadium as low as they could. The engines was as loud as could be. Then the 747 started to fade out. And then they faded in with another song. It was unreal. I was hooked the first time I saw them at that free concert. But I'm 70 years old now. And I still will be amazed hearing what ever they would play. Pink Floyd perfected music

The sweet smell of a great sorrow lies over the land Plumes of smoke rise and merge into the leaden sky A man lies and dreams of green fields and rivers But awakes to a morning with no reason for waking He's haunted by the memory of a lost paradise In his youth or a dream, he can't be precise He's chained forever to a world that's departed It's not enough, it's not enough His blood has frozen and curdled with fright His knees have trembled and given way in the night His hand has weakened at the moment of truth His step has faltered One world, one soul Time pass, the river roll And he talks to the river of lost love and dedication And silent replies that swirl invitation Flow dark and troubled to an oily sea A grim intimation of what is to be There's an unceasing wind that blows through this night And there's dust in my eyes, that blinds my sight And silence that speaks so much louder than words Of promises broken
