At 3:38 you say that the HDPlex gets warmer than the Pico PSU. That means that it has to be less efficient / draw more power.
@notreal53117 жыл бұрын
americanv8ss this is true, however 12V bricks tend to be less efficent then 19V laptop charger bricks, at least that is what Johnny Guru speculated here: www.jonnyguru.com/modules.php?name=NDReviews&op=Story&reid=207

Great informative video. This could be of interest, after doing some research about SFF systems with Pico PSUs I realized that 12v AC DC power bricks with high amps are expensive but perhaps not the best quality if you intend to runt your system 24/7. The solution to the PSU problem is to instead buy a good quality, high amps transformers intended for LED or Fluorescent light fixtures. Easy to get hold of and big selection depending on what you need, modular, high output power, waterproof etc.
@bunch87 жыл бұрын
This is the first time I've heard the word "Lovechild" used when referring to a DC power suplly :) Also, the extra heat dissipated by this HDPlex power supply is probably due to it having to convert a higher 19V to 12V for the motherboard whereas the PicoPSU doesn't convert the voltage because the power brick for the PicoPSU is already at 12V.. I'm definitely going to pick one up. Thanks for the review. Good job!

I'm not sure if it would fit, that is an extremely tight case. Usually cases that small don't have filters. If you wanted something in that ballpark, I would check out the Wesena ITX-5B, or the Realan W60.

Hey man, great job on these SFF videos, very informative! A small question... I recently picked up an old iMac G4 (dome: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/IMac_G4) computer, removed all the inner components, and will be installing OS X 10.12 Sierra (hackintosh). I have a Gigabyte GA-Z170N-Gaming-5 MB, a 256Gb Samsung 950 pro NVME SSD, 16Gb Corsair 2400 DDR4 memory, and another Samsung 2.5" SSD (No dedicated GPU). The HDPlex 160W + internal 160W DC ATX PSU (combo) needs to power these components + a new 17.3" LCD that is replacing the old one (converting the internal LVDS cable to HDMI). Will the HDPlex 160W be good enough to power these components? Thanks for your help!

I am curious about the Pico PSU; the Pico is not expelling any heat because it is only doing minor voltage adjustments for the 3.3 and 5v rail while 12v is passing straight through its solid-state switches into the system. It seems to me that a Pico PSU could be modified to push ANY wattage PCIE-powered video-card by attaching an extra high-amperage solid state relay/transistor that passed through extra 12v DC power to a video card; I think I'll experiment with this idea on my bench with an old 8800GT I have lying round.
@Tekeverything7 жыл бұрын
Yes the added heat is due primarily to the additional conversion being done by the HDPlex. I have seen plenty of modded Pico 160xt's. They can handle loads over 200W as well, you need to upgrade the wires to a thicker gauge though. The effort it takes to mod the units, then find higher wattage bricks simply is not worth it to me when the HDPlex 160 can be had for less money when you add on the cost of the bricks.

Awesome video and PSU! And I noticed you've fixed that! How did you do it? Some kind of extender in between?
@JeppeEbbesen7 жыл бұрын
Wait... Is that a molex to 2x male Sata power?
@Tekeverything7 жыл бұрын
I tucked all the cables underneath the 24 pin cable. Without shortening the 24 pin it is really tight, but they will fit.... and yes I used a Molex to 2 SATA adapter. it was cleaner than using the 4 attached SATA cables.
@JeppeEbbesen7 жыл бұрын
Yup it's a really tight fit. I'm considering trying to make a custom 24 pin cable - there's some good guides here on YT. That might be a project for another time :). Awesome - already ordered a molex to 2 sata adapter, and it should be coming soon. Thanks for the help! I could not even make the 4 attached Sata cables work because they go in at a 90 degree angle, and therefore would stick out the side.

@sceancrottynesi16387 жыл бұрын
I have a question... didn't really understood how these little psu work. Till now I know that, in order to work, you need a power brick and the Pico. But I saw, at HDPlex website, that the wattages in combo between Pico and powerbrick are not equal. The first combo: 80W AC/DC + 160W DC/ATX, the second combo: 160W AC/DC + 160W DC/ATX how that's affects "performance"? My other question is: I've already a laptop brick rated at 90W, if I match it with the 160W pico, how much juice can i extract from it? Hope that all this is understandable :)
@Tekeverything7 жыл бұрын
The wattage do not need to match up. Your overall system will be limited to the wattage of the power brick you are using. You could use your 90W brick as long as it is compatible with the HDPlex. You would be limited to a 90W system.
@sceancrottynesi16387 жыл бұрын

I don't understand how this 160W PSU is supposedly capable of supplying a typical i7 with mid-range GPU. When I simulate my current system ( outervision.com/b/YGtvt2 ) it requires at least 270W, while it isn't particularly demanding (GTX960 and cheap i5). Should I be able to use this HD Plex 160W? With additional SATA drives it estimates 290W... almost double the 160W. Could you please advise?

Hi, I purchased the hdplex 160 with the hp 230w power brick, currently running it with an underclocked and undervolted 6700k at 3.4ghz and an evga 1060 sc. When I run uniengine valley benchmark, my computer sometimes turns off and resets, does this happen with you as well?
@Tekeverything7 жыл бұрын
No, that has never happened to me. I have run a 7700 with a Zotac 1060 min, and EVGA 1060 mini SC. Both overclocked to there limits. I would guess that it is most likely a power brick issue, as the HDPlex is capable of handling more load than your setup would produce. What case are you using?

Tek Everything That's my problem... at 196W from the wall, the PSU chikes during the Sky Diver benchmark and restarts. When I use my 300W Flex-ATX PSU, it's A-OK. All chips are at stock clocks except for RAM, which I have at 2133MHz. Is this normal for the parts?
@Tekeverything7 жыл бұрын
196W seems like a large spike for that system, but it is certainly possible. Admittedly I am not that familiar with AMD CPU load wattages. Are you using the 192W power brick with your Pico?
@davidmalkowski78507 жыл бұрын
Tek Everything Yup, the 160-XT + the 192W adapter combo Minibox sells. I built another system with an i3-6100 and a 1050 Ti; 30% better CPU/GPU performance using only 120W. I did really like my 7890K, though, and I don't wanna leave it in the closet. I packed everything into an ANTEC ISK 310-150, replacing the PSU with a 300W Flex ATX one, and fitting everything in, and I do like it a lot, but it's not as small as it could be.

How can you run loads over 200W with a 160W PSU? That doesn't make sense.
@Tekeverything6 жыл бұрын
The HDPlex 160 is rated for 160-200W. With proper airflow it can handle around 220W

Yes, if you select the proper components.

I got one of these and it burnt out within 5 seconds. The company has not responded to any correspondence. Do not recommend.

wait do You need an external power brick useless I hate power bricks they look awful and take up space in annoying places.
@Tekeverything7 жыл бұрын
To each there own. If you want to use extremely compact cases you need alternative power solutions. Removing the bulk of a standard PSU allows for significantly more flexible builds.

HI TechEverything: I need a pico power supply for an Intel Pentium G3420, 8gb of DDR3 ram, a GTX 1050 and a 525gb Crucial SSD. What Pico Power Supply combo should I get? Very confused on all the options. Cooler Master claims I need 161 watts. Is 180 watt psu safe? Cheers!!!

I would recommend the HDPlex 160 and the HP 230W power brick. It is a more versatile and cheaper option.
