The company that could afford the billion dollar loss on PS3 to be 'forward compatible' was not the same company structure or debt-wise that could do that sort of thing again for PS4. And considering MS's disastrous implementation of UHD blu on the xbox 1, I'd say it was pretty much a wash...

@@halfvader8015 but better that they actually had a uhd bluray player than ps4 that did not. sure the uhd bluray player on xbox one wasnt as good as the best dedicated uhd bluray players on the market, but they were better than many of the cheap options, not to mention it was still miles ahead of ps4s regular bluray performance and not to mention playing the 4k bluray discs still looked way better than the 4k you would get from netflix or other streaming services. the minor differences on the next gen consoles uhd blurays is something that can be corrected via firmware updates, which they are working on. MS have already corrected the blackness levels issues via the latest firmware after vincent showcased the issues.

@@MasterRend4n Sure, I know, saw that. But there are a bunch of other problems too. And as I've been saying it took years for them to (almost) iron out the ongoing problems on Xbox1. So atm it's hard to see how this will be any different. Forgive me for being glass half empty on this - I'm not happy they 'already' corrected the black levels. After years of stuffing up with the last one I'm incredulous they allowed it out of the gate with black level problems to start with - because blacks were *also* a problem last time around! And if it's true that it's the same UHD drive as before, all I can do is shake my head even more. Not to be combative but I'd even disagree about PS4 and XB1 re UHD performance/quality. PS4 was a great regular blu-ray player, but the XB1s couldn't even manage *regular* blu (never mind UHD) playback without constant skipping and crashes on the 1s for a while there (in addition to all the other UHD/HDR problems). Just an embarrassment. Obviously I'm not an Xbox hater as I own one, but my God MS are appalling way too much of the time. Cheers.

I personally think the reason that the xbox delivers lower performance and only 10 bit rather than 12 is due to it being the app from the Xbox One X and hasn't been fully upgraded/ optimised for the Series X

And why would you fix something that isn't broken? They are putting money where the issue was last gen =not having games. Actually xbox is best way to go ps5 always puts movies in 24 fps even ones that arnt but xbox puts movies in 23.98 for 23.97 And movies that ate 24 fps are 24 fps scream factory movies play in 24fps on xbox for some reason it is problem with studio canal and xbox

Thank you for pointing out the Series X frame-skipping issue on 24fps discs. It has been present for years now, dating back to previous generations of Xbox and affects standard blurays mastered in 24fps as well. I've reported the problem to Microsoft to no avail. Any chance you can reach out to the same MS engineer that responded to the "raised black level" issue? I feel like you are my only hope!

A console requires a dedicated chip to support Dolby Vision which is lacking on both the PS5 and XBOX Series X. it is possible to add Dolby Vision support via a firmware update to devices with sufficiently powerful processors. I'd rather buy a dedicated player and wait for the PS5 Pro :)

@@loco3514 They are the 3 pronged inputs you usually see in passive speakers. The main reason is they produce less noise when having to do long runs, but since most people have their theater equipment relatively close to each other its not usually needed in home Audio. I have the 9000 and love it, but yeah, if you don't care about the build quality or the xlrs, the 820 is pretty close to matching.

​@@dubster82 A couple of things warrant the higher price from what I can tell. The build quality for one is much better in the 9000, also the analog sound output is superior if you require or prefer analog. Beyond that with the ub9000 you also get extra smaller features and configurations for those who may need it. Personally I run audio through a nice amp already and so I am not so much in need of the analog sound out from the either of the two Blu-ray players. In this case the ub820 was great for me.

At least I can play CD's at full 48khz on the Series X. The PS5 physically can not read CD's as it doesnt have the hardware and will probably never have that ability in future generations. As a musician the Series X was a better option for me. The issues for BlueRay playback on the X could definitely be fixed by a simple software update, which judging by the age of this video, it probably already happened. (Though I cant check for myself as I do not own DVD's currently).

Great video Vincent as always. I have a few questions. Does this superior chroma resolution in high frequencies have any perceivable effects in real-life content? Would the PS5 12-bit signal's smoother color gradation benefit 8-bit (SDR) content as well? If a player gives you both fps options, 24 and 23.97, would setting the 23.97 option be the best case scenario with non-Studio-Canal catalog? Can 24hz output introduce any anomaly to 23.97hz content?

@@lolerie From the results Vincent obtained and my own extensive experience with the Xbox One S and X, I feel pretty confident in saying that they've simply ported across the same crappy app they used on the last gen consoles. The first 4K disc I watched on my PS5 was Rogue One, I'd watched it multiple times on my One X and I could see the differences in motion handling, detail, highlights, colouring and HDR immediately.

Lucky for you. I own both Consoles but my PS5 Disc drive doesn't work when playing 4k blu ray/blu ray & DVDs. Sometimes the picture comes on with the background sounds, but I can't hear the vocals, when the Actors are speaking. Sometimes its the opposite way round, & even better, the Picture comes on with actually no sound at all. So I've been using my Xbox Series X with my LG C9 & it looks good. My PS5 is definitely getting returned when this lockdown in the UK 🇬🇧 is sorted. Its kinda strange, because I can play Game's perfectly on my PS5. They look Awesome. So I don't understand whats going on. 🥺

Cuz dvds were just either 4.7gb or 8gb and ran at 8x speed but Blu-ray’s have 25gb or more and therefore has a lot of compressed data and runs at only 2x speed and really depends on processing of the device as well Think of it like this, dvds are like a book that’s got 4.7-8k pages, then you go to Blu-ray’s 25k pages but now not only is the story much longer but the words are way smaller and compacted per page so takes much longer to read it all and is much harder to do in the first place

The PS5 is terrible at skipping with certain standard Blu-rays always in the same spot for some reason. Nothing physically wrong with the disc. @@SotNist Hi from Turkey... First of all I apologize for my English. There is pcm, dolbyx dts output in ps5 / ps4 settings. If one of these is selected, this is the whole sound output. For example, Uncharted 4 / Spider-Man doesn't have its own sound codec? I use Sony Amplifier. It's funny that all games have the same sound output. It's ridiculous that they don't have Dolby Atmos, but if it's Blu-ray and 4k Blu-ray. It's ridiculous not to get Dolby Atmos through apps (Netflix, Amazon, Apple tv + etc ..) for example: There is the Dolby Logo behind Pes 2019. I won't get Dolby sound when my settings are Dts or Pcm. When the sound and image are made 'upscale' or 'downscale', its originality deteriorates.

I noticed myself that audio won't perfectly sync with the speaker controller in Astro's Playroom unless I set the PS5 to PCM. Which takes away a lot of the spatial audio for my simple set up. I ended up just buying a headset that works on both Series X and PS5, so I don't have to keep checking audio format on the system, the TV, and then the speakers etc. So I kinda know what you mean.

@@YusufPiskin it is for convenience. I know it is not optimal for enthusiasts but in the end 90% gamers just wanted things to work. Sony knows most HDR TV owners have terrible or mismatched SDR settings so in order to make SDR content closer to director's intention, they encapsulate all SDR content into HDR10. This does mean the peak brightness will always be around 300 nits, not very suitable for dark viewing, and colors will be skewed if the TV does not properly follow HDR PQ.

Different audio settings flow from different technical requirements for movies (both disc & streaming) vs. games. For Blu-ray, most new discs use lossless bitstreaming to save space on the disc and meet Dolby & DTS preferred specs; it's a requirement for immersive audio (Atmos or DTS:X) from discs. Streaming movies have even stricter bandwidth constraints, so they typically use lossy bitstreaming (DD, DD+ or DD+ Atmos; DTS generally doesn't do streaming). Games, OTOH, must generate sound in real-time; to avoid lagging they generally must output either uncompressed PCM or a lossy bitstream. (Except for maybe a streaming box or two, I don't know of ANY consumer hardware that can encode a lossless bitstream in real-time.) That's why Dolby created MAT/PCM Atmos originally for the Xbone X/S; it allows games to produce metadata for immersive audio elements while using uncompressed PCM for the elements themselves.
