We installed the latest firmware update (as of 31 Oct 2017) of 04.70.10 on our 65-inch LG B7 review sample, & found that it improved picture quality in several aspects, as well as added Dolby Atmos decoding over HDMI.
Our review unit was the LG OLED65B7V which is the UK version with a crescent metallic silver stand.
Many thanks to Crampton & Moore for sponsoring this video. Please call 0113 244 6607 and ask for David Conner who will take care of you with good independent advice, service and price.

I think LG needs to be given a lot of credit for the year-to-year improvements they make to their OLED panels. I’m holding out hope that Sony will introduce a second generation OLED in 2018, that marks a pretty significant improvement over the A1. But if they don’t, I’m probably going to get an LG B7. Steve Yedlin, the DOP for ‘The Last Jedi’, is currently using a 55-inch B7 to double as his reference monitor. LG has come such a long way since investing R&D into OLED technology.

Correction the B7A DOES have internal atmos encoding since all the TVs have the same panels and chipsets, only the speakers don't have atoms output. You'll still get atoms if you connect it to a receiver with atoms support like I do.

Vincent, you are so informative and have great content! Just one constructive criticism... I wish you would improve your presentation by not repeating redundant info. For example, you don't need to keep repeating the full firmware number or model number for a TV after mentioning it once at the beginning of the video. You can just refer to them as the "new" or "old" firmware, or the "LG" vs "Sony" tv, or "the C7" etc. This would help to shorten your needlessly long videos. You can get across the same information in half the time. Thank you for listening and keep making great content!

My brightness was at 53 no problems. After the update there is a slight glow at 53 and I had to bring it down to 50 to regain true black. Nothing major but after watching this vid I wish a professional like Vincent would explain any technical improvements in the update. As you can see in this B7 video only a trained professional eye can understand all the technical improvements in an update. But the B6 is the 2016 model so it probably wont happen.

Technicolor Expert mode is exactly the same as the ISF modes - if you match the settings, the picture will look identical.

Thanks for your response. Of course, this preset only distinguishes itself by making some different choices in picture settings. I find those perceptually more pleasing when compared to ISF Bright Room. Mainly I tend to look at how much contrast there is between actors' faces and the background and how pronounces facial detail in shadows is. Yes, I know this is quite idiosyncratic.

I love my 65" C7, my only real complaint is that image burn is really bad if you have static text on the screen. It's fine for movies and TV and motion picture, but in apps or gaming if there is solid white text on the screen and then you have grey backgrounds, it stays for minutes.

in this video I’m going to review the 65” B7 OLED tv and go through the improvements in picture quality brought about by the latest firmware update Hello I’m Vincent Theo and I’m a TV reviewer and professional calibrator. and in this video I have 2 LG 65” B7 televisions in this room. It’s probably the last time I’ll be able to spend the time with 2 2017 LG OLEDs of the same screen size because LG is seeing I’m having too much fun with these samples and they’re collecting it this week! 00:40But while I have these two review units here, I am going to try to demonstrate the improvement in quality the latest firmware update has brought to the party I’ve updated the screen on your left there to the 04.70.10 which is the most recent that is available in the UK. And this screen here is the same 65” B7 on the old firmware which doesn’t have the technicolor picture mode and I’ll compare side by side. 1:30 Just one quick note for any viewers form the US. These are the LG B7V which are available in Europe. In the states, you have the B7A and B7P and the P has a different stand but also you get the B7A cut down version. That doesn’t have the internal Dolby Atmos decoding. Let’s get back to looking at what the firmware brings to the system on this UK model 65B7V I’d like to thanks Crampton and Moore Leeds for sponsoring this video. They’re a Yorkshire based retailer who do internet based mail order. If you’ve watched this video, please call them and ask for David Corner (phone number on screen) he will give you his best price. It’s not just the price though Iv’e worked with them for a number of years and they help with our annual shoot out and help me out with samples I can’t get from manufacturers and they will also pre-check the screen for you in case you’re worried about not getting a perfect panel and they’ll even run it in for a couple of weeks. For a fee, I’ll even go into the store and calibrate the screen for you. 4:27 So let’s go into the analysis of what the latest firmware update has improved. 4:50 I’ll just go and show you the firmware version. You can see it’s 04.70.10 and on the screen on the right, it’s still on an older verison. [editor’s note: At 5:21 here, I don’t want to speculate about what Vincent is holding in front of the screen on the right] 5:35 you can see the screen on the right doesn’t ahve the technicolor mode, but the screen on the left here has this Technicolor Expert Picture mode. One quetsion people will ask is “what does that picture mode do?” - from my testing, it’s the same as teh ISF expert modes. Seems to be using the same service menu settings so you should get an identical image for each of those modes, if you use the same user settings. You can see if I toggle back and forth between the modes, this Oppo background image doesn’t change at all. While if I use other picture modes, it changes dramatically. 7:14 Now when I did my LG C7 vs Sony A1 comparison video I showed a frame in the revenant where Leo’s face was showing more posterisation on the LG OLED. Their engineers seem to have taken this on board and improved it in the latest firmware. They optimised the near-black gamma so when the camera faded to black it becomes darker quicker so the coarser degradation doesn’t show as much as before. You can see on the screen on the left here, the dip from dark grey to black seems much smoother and is less prone to those posterisation artefacts. 8:17 The optimisation of the near-black gamma tracking also seemed to improve the near-black handling of noise management in dark scenes that are highly compressed. In this clip of Father Brown, the macro blocking artefacts or noisiness is less on the screen on the left. I think because the gamma tracking is more linear, the difference between individual dark grey and black blocks is less stark and noticeable so the image looks cleaner and any blocks are smaller and less pronounced. 10:00 anther improvement I can see is in the motion handling. This is a loop from a chapter in the Martian where the camera pans down to Earth. You can see less judder and it retains more detail in the atmosphere and the visible continent on earth. The TrueMotion processing settings are turned off on both screens. It looks like the LG engineers have improved the handling at least of 24fps material, which will help with these slow panning shots. 11:12 Now when I reviewed the C7/B7 many moons ago I pointed out an artefact during fast sports like football where the ball would tear from time to time because of flawed de-interlacing. The latest firmware update has definitely fixed that, I’ve watched lots of football and I haven’t seen that happen on the latest firmware so well done to LG for fixing that. 12:00 As you can see the latest firmware has brought about a number of improvements on these OLEDs. Besides picture quality the firmware update has also introduced Dolby Atmos decoding from an HDMI source. Previously the TVs have internal Dolby Atmos decoding but only for streaming sources. You can now do the same with HDMI sources which is another thing I have to congratulate the LG engineers for. I’ve reviewed a number of OLEDs from different brands over the last few years and I think the strength of LG is their R&D and marketing team are listening to constructive feedback and are willing to update their firmware in response to reviews and they have been much more nimble than other companies who seem to be struggling to bring new features. LG seem to be constantly acting on this feedback to improve picture and add other features. This is not to say that these TVs are flawless, there are still issues such as the broken KZbin HDR from the internal app. If you play one, even on the latest firmware, if you compare that side-by-side the HDR will have elevated blacks and look quite washed out, probably due to the wrong transfer function being applied. Hopefully LG can work on that. Also some owners have complained about the HDR game mode being too dim. Let me explain that, some HDR games have values going up to 10,000 nits. The LG models always want to maintain the specular highlight detail. As I explained in my tone mapping vide, you always have to choose between brightness and detail when trying to tone map a source video with much higher peak brightness than the display. In the case of these OLEDs, they are trying to maintain so much detail they lose some brightness in the average picture level (APL) - 16:08 you can try to engage dynamic contrast to try to restore some brightness this but I have to warn you that in the dynamic contrast in cinema mode it is linked to activeHDR (LG’s dynamic tone mapping) the but in game mode it is just pure dynamic contrast stretching. it oesn’t try to simulate dynamic metadata. So in game mode it doesn’t engage dynamic tone mapping, but with games, input lag and picture quality are at odds with each other - the desire to reduce latency by cutting down on video or colour processing then the picture quality will suffer so you always have to make a choice between responsiveness or quality. The LG does have a very low input lag of 21ms measured either in SDR or HDR mode. Some people are complaining that color gamut is fixed to Wide in sdr game mode. My response to that is you can tone it down via calibration but you always have to choose between picture quality and responsiveness anyway. While we are on the topic of activeHDR, this is a feature unique to the 2107 LG OLEDs. Maybe others will adopt it in 2018, we’ll see at CES. I like this because it does a good job of maintaining specular highlight detail and maximising peak brightness but it’s not without it’s shortcomings. When I watched dark films, it can elevate blacks that introduces some blocking and artefacts that you wouldn’t see on a display without dynamic tone mapping. also when there’s fast ramping from dark to bright, the dynamic tone mapping tech can incur some luminance fluctuations here and there as they try to analyse that signal and recover any lost specular highlight detail. I think they’ve done a good job in giving more choice about the HDR presentation from sources that are mastered to a higher peak brightness than the display. 19:30 Over the last couple of months, the LG OLEDs, especially the B7 and C7 have been perceived as the best value OLED displays but it’s often thought that they are sub-par in terms of outright picture quality vs panasonic or sony. I think that I and hdtvtest have been guilty of this narrative too but I think it’s less true now - although the sony has better near-black handling and better gradation, and the Panasonic shave better outright colour accuracy especially after calibration but actually these LGs have their own strengths that put the on a level playing field - low input lag, least aggressive automative brightness limiter, so you get higher peak brightness, and their dynamic tone mapping I think these LG 2017 OELDs can stand toe-toe with the others, even before you consider these improvements in the latest firmware. LG keeps giving better value with each passing month. Don’t forget these basic, supposed entry level, sets actually have identical picture quality to their top-end G7 and W7 wallpaper TVs. Even these B7 and C7 have the ambient light rejection filter to improve blacks unlike the Panasonic 952 or Philips 9002 that exhibit some magenta tint from ambient light falling on the screen.22:18 Don’t get me wrong, even thought price is very tempting. if you take prove out of the equation I’d say that these 2017 LG OLEDs are good enough to go toe-toe with what Panasonic and Sony have to offer, Please subscribe and if you’d like your TV calibrated anywhere in the UK, please submit a request via our web form.

Hi Vincent, love the vid, but my 65B7 just got the 04.70.06, and the TV is reporting no updates from that. Any idea as to the reason for that? I live in the UK (South). Also, after the 'update' I actually thought, and still believe, the PQ is WORSE than before! One very important thing we need to know - if we've just spent hundreds of pounds on a TV calibration, and the PQ changes due to firmware updates, does this mean we've wasted our money, and now need ANOTHER cal???

I’m looking to purchase an OLED TV this holiday season. After taking in all this information I’m beginning to think purchasing this TV would be a mistake if I intend on connecting it to my PS4 Pro for 4K gaming. This is interesting to me because this is the number one rated TV on the web for gaming and most reviews fail to mention the detail about brightness. Should I go with a Sony OLED display then if I prefer HDR gaming brightness over lag time? And as always, thank you Vincent for your in-depth reviews.

Thank you for the review but you also forgot to mention that this new firmware update ruined tons of other things too, especially with the Xbox One S and it is not a microsoft bug, after the LG 4.70.06 and the 4.70.10 update i have been also having problems with everything connected straight to the TV via hdmi and netflix internal app. 1- With my cable box, i am having lip sync issues that i NEVER had before and strange audio drop outs when the channel is HD and has dolby sound output. When i switch to a channel without dolby then the sound is pretty loud again but any channel with dolby sound then you can barely hear anything at 90 level. Never had those issues prior to the update, on the 3.60.09. 2- issues with the xbox one S that eveyone one been having, (check AVforum and AVSforum) you can't watch regular bluray nor 4k bluray anymore EVEN IF YOU PUT THE SOUND TO STEREO UNCOMPRESSED, Dolby or DTS. Xbox one s is totally useless with the TV after the update (xbox connected straight to TV). Things used to work BEFORE and AFTER the microsoft Fall update on the 3.60.09 BUT then upgraded to 4.70.06 and broke everything. 3- Netflix internal app on the TV. Watching the "Death Note" before the update produced Rich and Amazing Dolby Atmos sound from the 65E7v internal soundbar (even though the picture was and still is grainy). After the update you still get the dolby Atmos notification in the uper right corner when watching the "Death Note" but the sound is too darn low, you have crank up the sound to 90 level to barely hear anything. I don't know if the issue is also existing with other internal TV apps as i haven't tried any, after all those issues, i got so disapointed with what once was a perfectly Awesome TV that i am not even switching it on anymore, went back to watching on my G6. 4- Apple TV 4k, experiencing lip sync issues and getting audio drop outs when watching anything that has dolby sound. You have to know something, prior to the 4.70.06 i never touched the av sync setting on the TV, i had perfect sync with everything connected to the TV across the board. Now after the update, when started testing, i had to go back to the av sync setting and tweak it seven ways from sunday to barely get it to be watchable in content.

file1man, that's not an option... it is not possible for the 2017 models to be downgraded. You could on the 2016 sets. Anyway I ended up getting a new TV altogether, one that is still on the previous firmware out of the box.

ive bought a b7a schedule to be delivered shortly. makes me nervous that in 2017 lg would cause so many serious problems with a firmware update- seems like they did not debug or apply the firmware to a few of their sets in their lab to uncover & fix issues . So far, I only see LG refusing any real warranty claims for excessive vertical bars or lines ie blue lines running completey down the length of tv, excessive pink or red tints ruining viewing. Customer support at LG seems very poor, nonexistant. Versus Sony who makes good effort to foster customer satisfaction on warranty claims. But Sony is priced 30 to 50 % higher than LG

file1man Wow I am also waiting on a 65" b7a Model. If i have any issues during the return period, it's going back. No, if and or but's about it. Can you post pictures of the vertical bending lines and tint issues you were having? Are you forced to update? Or can you skip an update? I usually wait a few months before i update, just to see what issues others are having :o/ Best of luck to you.

Which would you recommend the 2017 B7 or the 2018 Sony x900F in the US? I like action movies so am worried about the soap opera effect. Both TVs cost the same amount in the US and wanted to get your expert opinion. Is there any other TVs other than the ones I mentioned that you like better? Thanks for the great reviews hdtvtest

Vincent, I'm sure this is a common question, but do you have a link to the lovely 4K artwork you use as a screensaver on these OLED? Thanks for the wonderful reviews, the most helpful on the web! Would you mind doing an update on the latest firmware on the LG C6 from last year? There seem to be some confusion there regarding HLG implementation and the new HDR gmaing mode update.

Love your content. I got a great deal on a brand new 55B7A ($600). I plan on purchasing the SJ9 sound bar to complement the television in a smaller space. If I plan on using the bar's Atmos audio "capability ", do I just run my content through the bar for decoding, then out to the TV?

Hi Vincent I really respect your knowledge about TV's So I want your help to decide if its time for a replacement of my much beloved Panasonic TC-PVT50. I am super sensitiv to motion blur, SOAP effect and unnatural colours, in that order. So why do I want to upgrade? I would like to jump the HDR wagon, I also love the picture quality of 4K but HDR is whats really makes a difference. Can the LG 65B7 in your option replace my old Panasonic?

Based on Naj B comments with many issues created by the latest LG firmware updates, do you suggest I, with a new B7A bought nov 21, 2017 update its firmware. As a computer techie, firmware updates rarely cause problems on our computers, but we can always delete & reinstall a prior firmware . I see many comments that once firmware updates are applied to 2017 LG models, a prior firmware cant be re-installed. apparently 2016 models could go back to a prior firmware, not 2017 models. Can someone confirm they installed newest firmware then deleted and went back? and are ew firmware issues a problems for very few LG owners.

Wait this update makes dark even darker? I use the 55" B7V as a PC monitor, and I have the impression dark colours are too dark already. In the most extreme cases some shadows in games seem black while there should be some detail in there. Won't this update just make that worse?

Good video, Vincent. Cleared up my confusion over what the Technicolour preset brought to the table. On another note related to the B7/C7, do you know why Dolby Vision is showing a lot of noise in some Netflix streams? A good example is any sky scene in Stranger Things season 2. I've seen suggestions of the noise/grain being inherent in the source but it's so ugly that I suspect that not to be the case. I'd be interested to hear your view on this. Thanks for all the good videos.

Matt Weir hey Matt, the grain/noise in Stranger Things 2, is artificial, and added in post. It stands out due to the inherent compression artifacts that stem from streamed content. The Marvel shows suffer from this as well-but IMO, the Dolby Vision still looks terrific.
