LG 2018 OLED TV Picture Settings: Alpha 9, BFI, Brighter HDR Game Mode

We go through the picture settings in the user menu on LG's 2018 OLED TV, and explain the specific controls for the Alpha 9 processor's decontouring filter, black frame insertion (BFI), "Logo luminance adjustment" to reduce the risk of image retention and burn-in, as well as dynamic tone-mapping in HDR Game Mode.
The specific model demonstrated here is the LG 65-inch W8 Wallpaper OLED TV, but the menu settings will be similar throughout the company's 2018 OLEDs including the B8, C8, E8 and G8.

Hi Vincent, please can you answer this question to help address some confusion over Edge Enhancer. On 2018 LG OLED TV’s if you turn Edge Enhancer to OFF does it mean it is ON and vice versa? 90% of games have you set peak brightness and black level in HDR games. So using peak brightness and tone mapping mess up the image? Should I turn off tone mapping or should I leave it on and crank up the peak brightness on the in game settings?

I also would like to point out all these new settings are ''software'' driven and I would have thought are not hardware dependant so realy this must be down to the new Os ''Webos 4.0''. I'v said all along that ''Active HDR '' should never have been placed under ''dynamic contrast '' option I mean that not only confuses folks also no one actually new that by switching on ''dynamic contrast '' to just low setting would activate ''Active HDR '' which in my book is a real big deal LG!!! They finally placed Active HDR under its own title so LG I realy think you alt to give us 2017 owners webos 4.0 please. Also "Black Frame insertion'' is all software driven and still should work with 2017 OLED & SJ models. These are major software updates in my book. I have a LG 2017 SJ model and this would be fantastic maybe LG will upgrade it's 2017 OLED & SJ models later this year even if we have to wait Untill late summer after you launch your 2018 range this would be fantastic. I think it would be very unfair of LG not to bring all these new software updates which are pretty dam good to all 2017 OLED & SJ models after all we all spent alot of money not that long ago. Dominiek Taylor that's incorrect I'm afraid. In order to activate '' Active HDR '' you need to set ''dynamic contrast '' to low. This is from LG direct buddy... ''LG’s ‘Active HDR’ function analyses content on a frame by frame basis in real time, to determine metadata for the scene. This information is then used to adjust the HDR tone-curve to match the content, on a frame by frame basis. Control of the ‘Active HDR’ feature is found in the ‘Dynamic Contrast’ setting in the Expert Picture Settings menu. In HDR mode, the Dynamic Contrast settings are defined as follows: • Off - Active HDR Disabled / Contrast Enhancement Disabled • Low - Active HDR Enabled / Contrast Enhancement Disabled • Medium - Active HDR Enabled / Contrast Enhancement Low • High - Active HDR Enabled / Contrast Enhancement High The default setting of ‘Low’ is recommended for accurate content reproduction.''

Great video I’m thinking about buying a new LG oled 65” c8 I have the LG 55” 850HV led 3D from 2016 I like the 3D but I don’t like the led edge light blade it’s worse than my 2011 LG 47” 1080P HD led 3d tv. I was also thinking about the new LG nano technology 65” TVs as oled don’t come at a more budget price. I think BFI will be at 60hz for LG's 2018 OLEDs. Only measured 650-lines of motion resolution by D-Nice on the AVSforums. That means the feature is on par with Sony and Panasonic.

Yes, of all the new features on the 2018 models, this is the one feature I'd most like to see in a firmware update to the 2017 models! So many channels now have logos that it is unreasonable for owners of the 2017 models to have to avoid prolonged watching of any of the channels that have static logos (such as CNN, MSNBC, etc.) in order to minimize the likelihood of cumulative burn-in damage - especially if there is a fix that can be implemented through a firmware update to help minimize the potential for the problem.

Just got a 55c7v a month ago. Please sort the hdr game mode out with an update as the latest firmware update has made it way to dark!! Now I have a mode that is unusable which isn't acceptable on a premium tv!! Close to a reference monitor in which field? Color reproduction? That’s not all a commercial TV needs. Anyway, HDR, 4K, 8K, are all marketing suggestions. In real world to appreciate a 4K movie at 3 meters distance (10 feet) you should have a 100+” inches TV. Not to mention that no TV covers rec2020 and reach 10000nits. I’ll stick with rec709 1080p SDR for a loooooong time. At least until microLED will be sold at 2000$ for a 100” capable of 10000 bits and 100% rec2020. But I’m pretty sure that by then we will have another acronym to stimulate yet another useless purchase. Back to calibration, CalMan AutoCal SDR on 2018 LG OLED is broken.

Michele Di Tullio does any TV cover REC.2020 at all? I mean the successor to that is already out. We sit about 8 feet away, what 4K TV size is adequate for the future? We use a 720p plasma and everybody is happy with it, but just thinking for the future.

It's funny how LG erased the curved fad for good meanwhile Samsung still refuses to let it die. Hate that the curve fad is running amok on good PC monitors that end up me not liking them because of it.

I'm sorry, but this presentation is not very well organized and too little time on complex issues and too much on irrelevant details. Also, more attention should be paid as to where on the screen the pointer is pointing.

Funny.. 2017 - Sony Acoustic Surface - 2018 LG ''Crytal'' Sound, same thing to 1 year later and diferente name.. 2018 LG tries to do an image processor, copies the logo of the Alpha cameras from Sony... FFS The only good thing they did is the AutoCal..
