My father used to play this for me in the car when I was a little boy. He said it was his song to me. He was an alcoholic, he worked almost 80 hours a week in a paper factory. I almost never saw him because he was working. And when he was home, a lot of times he would just leave. Leave for days, weeks, sometimes months, going on benders. My mother was raising her little brothers because her mother was too sick to take care of them, taking care of my nana until the day she died when I was 8. They hated each other for most of my childhood. I never understood why he said this was his song to me, but now that I'm grown, and things are better than the were, I finally understand it. I bawl my eyes out every single time I hear this. He was trying to tell me why, he was trying to tell me no matter what happened he still loved me, that he wanted to give me a better life than what he had but he knew he and my mom were putting me through all the same things they went through, and he couldn't stop it. He wanted to, she wanted to, but it was too much for them both to get a hold of. I told him a few years ago that I finally understood, and that I loved him. No matter how bad things got, he never left us, not permanently. He stood by my mother and our whole family through everything. He's a true father. If any of you are blessed enough to still have your fathers, please know, they love you. More than you'll ever understand.

I'm so glad you're reminding people Shaq, that Em was an artist who put it ALL out there 4 the world to see & judge & his fans loved him for it. No matter how rich he got or how many albums he sold, he always kept it real & the fans could relate. Rappers today don't actually speak on people's real struggles. Instead they rap about bull***t like guns they've never actually shot, drugs they aren't really doing, cars they have that no one else can afford & a bunch of other jibjab that evokes zero emotion. Mumble Rap and Auto Tune def have a place at the table but so does Big Bird singing Wheels on the Bus go Round & Round 😐 Having an audience doesn't make it a product of lyrical genius. I can think of a select few who fall in that category & Em is rightfully one of them. The music he made that influenced me 20yrs ago still hits home for today for me.

@Ayaforshort5 жыл бұрын
I agree in theory but culture appropriation is an issue. First off black people are still discriminated against and it's not fair to say we should all be equal for appropriation when black people are looked down on by society. We get judged harshly for our hair and style of dress. We are called ghetto and told we look like criminals for showing our culture. But when a white person wears the same hairstyle or style of dress they are called high fashion and edgy. We are forced to adapt and *assimilate* to white norms in the workplace for example to be taken seriously and gain employment. While they take our culture and claim it for themselves. The problem with cultural appropriation is *erasure.* eventually these things don't become associated with our culture anymore and people don't give groups credit for the contributions. All while we are looked down on. *Country music* was created by black people during slavery. Now not only is it considered to be a white genre. Now we have people like lil Nas X whose country song was removed from the billboard charts for not being country enough. Even though other country fusion songs by white people aren't contested. Many black people try to break into country music but the aren't welcome. It's not fair and that is why cultural appropriation matters. As long as we are being discriminated against, it isn't fair.
@Ayaforshort5 жыл бұрын
In my opinion Em doesn't fit this because he is actively contributing to Hip hop culture. He signs many black artist to his own label and pays homage to the people who came before him. He isn't contributing to an erasure of the black origins of Rap. This is a long post but I wanted to be thorough and clear. I do agree that race shouldn't affect someone's perception of their character or value, but as long as it does we should be allowed to celebrate our culture without it being stripped of its black roots.

This song was one of em's greatest/saddest songs, i remember getting the cd when i was 12 or 13 iirc, that and, jay z, tupac, 3doors down, nickelback, rick ross, and korn albums. can't remember all the names of the albums specifically but those were my playlists for most of my teens. that eminem cd tho, proly 100x more then the rest, not gonna lie i even dyed my hair blonde at one point lmfao it didn't suite me at all :)

We all can say that “it’s either you or me”, how many can do and say “babies I love you and will make sure your ok, from here on” then go on and destroy any Mudder Fqr that even dares to disrespect you.. Em, is a cultural Icon and to disrespect this man, is disrespecting all fathers.

Em has 3 distinct sides of himself that come out in his music.. "Slim Shady" (songs like 97 Bonnie & Clyde, 3am)..."Eminem" (songs like Lose Yourself, MOSH, White America)...and "Marshall" who comes out in songs like this one and When I'm Gone. You are so right that he has such a strong fanbase because he doesn't shy away from showing every single piece of who he is as a person
@luketedford9994 жыл бұрын
Lose yourself is actually none of the above. It’s actually B Rabbit from 8 mile. Very similar to Eminem but not quite the same. Lose yourself is basically a biography song about Rabbit’s rap battles and life in general. Eminem is on songs like white america, till I collapse, and sing for the moment.

Actually, sing for the moment might be slim it’s kinda hard to tell in that song

My 11 year old daughter knew of Eminem from school (people try rapping the fast part of Rap God) and she asked me if i knew who Eminem was. I told her he's tied as the best rapper ever with Tupac and played this for her and was fighting back the tears hard as fuck! I only played it because i loved the beat and the lyrics! Playing an emotional song like this, when i can relate to parts of it, with my oldest daughter? Emotional as fuck! The line "I remember back one year when daddy had no money, Mommy wrapped the Christmas presents up and stuck 'em under the tree and said some of 'em were from me Cause daddy couldn't buy 'em, I'll never forget that Christmas I sat up the whole night crying". That literally happened to me. Word for word! I spent all of my money on drugs because i was addicted to cannabis. My GF would buy the presents, pay the bills ect... And when i think back about those times it's so sad. I'm so glad i was able to move on from that for all of our benefit!

Just the reaction I thought I'd get! Gonna request "I'm back" from Marshall Mathers LP. That's Em on the crazy talk.... The very last few lines will have you left with your mouth open like that was disgusting but still dope how it was put together!

Lanie was Kim's sisters (I think) daughter. Both Mom & Dad had serious drug problems and was taken away. Em & Kim got custody. Then Kim got with another guy and had a little girl. Em applied for custody for her safety and won (rightfully, not because of his $) and he has been a girl x3 Daddy ever since.

All I am gonna say is no matter your age when you understand the song it'll get into you to where you'll cry. If it doesn't now it will sooner or later and when it does you'll realise the quality comparing to Music These days.
