Knorpp and South

7 жыл бұрын

We had a great afternoon in NYC visiting Wall Street with five of our nine kids and learned more good lessons about traveling in the city. Including how quickly you need to get out of a subway train to make sure you never get stuck! We also toured the offices of AFS which will be taking Elijah to Japan in a week!

+ivi122 - lol you must not have kids. I was watching my younger brother home alone when I was 8. I was mature and responsible and I had all the phone numbers to my parents, emergency services, and neighbors if something happened. Andrew is plenty old enough and he definitely seems mature for his age.

If you don't mind a suggestion: if a kid gets stuck on the train. Tell them to get off the next stop and then DONT move - the parent can get the next train and meet them - you don't know what each train station is like - suggesting that they find the opposite direction train might require them going down passages etc and they can just get lost/confused..certainly that can happen on the London Tube

Malcolm Wilkins I was going to say the same thing! Some stations are very complicated and have two totally separate entrances on different streets! I've never been to New York but I have been to London and Paris!
@abbottone
@abbottone 7 жыл бұрын
No he told them to get on the next train back to the original station and they would wait for them there - that's why I made the point above...regardless there should be station staff so it shouldn't be that stressful if it goes wrong

Agreed! Some stations (not all) in city only have exits and for you to go back to your original station (whether uptown or downtown) you may have go upstairs, cross the street and take the opposite route but you have to pay another toll.
@kiemc1855
@kiemc1855 7 жыл бұрын
Malcolm Wilkins that's great advice. I live in New York although I don't take the subway anymore because I drive but if you're from out of town and you miss your stop you could get confused and lost trying to cross over to the opposite side. also some of the train stations in the city you have to go out and go to the other side of the street pay again in order to get on the opposite side.

Thanks for sharing New York, you guys are actually a few stops from where I used to live in Astoria, if you want to try really good food, there is a place called " Pollos Mario" on queens plaza you transfer for the train 7 going to queens and get off on 87 street, when you are on the greet, walk one block like going back to the city and you will see it, it's the most amazing food..... it's Colombian food!! My husband is from Ecuador and he totally missed their food!!! As I see this video I got so many memories back ... 13 years in New York can forget so easy!!! Thanks!!👌🏻

Look up the obelisks in NYC. There are three of them and a lot of history behind them. The most famous of the three is Cleopatra's Needle in Central Park right by the Met. It is from Ancient Egypt and is really amazing. The history behind the three is so cool, and they line up in a perfect line even though they are all spaced really far apart and from a long time ago!

If you guys ever get the chance to ride the 6 (Lexington Line) train downtown to bowling green, ride it to the very last stop. Stay on the train when it goes back uptown because when it turns back, you will be able to catch a glimpse of the old station that was once there.

Thanks so much for showing your tour of the AFS office! I've been interested in their programs ever since I found about them 3 years ago! I was going to go on one of their summer programs this year but it didn't happen due to conflicts with a family trip. I sure hope Daniel never does do the lighter thing! I worked in our local hospital a long time, and I can tell you there have been some very horrible burns come in from when the lighter hits, explodes and the fluid sprays up and hits clothing and ignites, burning the wearer badly. Not common, but it does happen. Very interesting seeing New York! I am really enjoying tagging along on your excursions!

Megan, another bit of history is that at the time of Alexander Hamilton's duel and even that of his son a year earlier, dueling was illegal in New York. Both Hamilton's went across the river to a spot in NJ to duel, where it was legal. The spot where Hamilton was fatally wounded is still there. Oh and if you want a neat website to investigate sites in NYC, try www.atlasobscura.com . It's great for everywhere in the world, actually

North of the city aways is West Point Military Academy on the banks of the Hudson River up in the Beautiful Hudson Valley. Also north of the city is beautiful Lake George and Lake Champlain. You go up the New York Thruway to get there. About Google maps, it may be really useful in the US but I warn you not to rely on it too much when you're in Europe. It's not very accurate, especially with trains and buses. Once, we arrived in Vienna, Austria and we had to walk 15 minutes to get to our hotel when there was a different station a few steps away. Same with buses. It would be better to ask locals or residents there for the fastest route. Google maps for cars is pretty reliable at least.
